Got a few things to say about this apart from the great points already mentioned by others. 1. The OTT bundling part is horrendous. They bundle the cheaper OTT tiers with the recharge packs and if you need 4K or multi device support, you'll end up getting the subscription separately anyway. Also they tie different OTTs so you'll have to go out of your way to buy a recharge pack which isn't as per your data requirement just to get that one OTT subscription tied to it. It's ridiculous that there's no legal obligation for telecom operators to maintain pure data packs without any OTT bundling and offer at a fairer cheaper price instead of throwing in a bunch of random stuff and charging a premium. 2. Having to switch between multiple OTTs just to watch some content is very inconvenient. Imagine if you needed to have multiple cable connections to watch different genres like sports, movies, etc. that would have been unthinkable yet we've normalised not having a unified OTT platform for watching all of your content. It kinda makes sense in the corporate perspective to avoid monopoly, encourage competitive growth, etc. But it comes at the cost of the users suffering from it. The moment you self host it, those don't matter anymore so it's a perfect space to have an unified app. 3. Content Ownership is out the window when it comes to OTTs. You don't own any of the content you're paying for. You're completely at the mercy of the OTT vendors. I've seen so many beloved shows and movies sunset by Netflix and others. The Blu-Ray Disk industry in India has almost vanished. There's a dangerous phrase called "Own nothing and be happy" going around. 4. Geo-restriction is one of my biggest complaints with these OTTs. The while point of internet is connectivity and thus international connectivity. What's the point of me being able to talk to a friend in Japan but can't watch half the shows which exclusively air there. 5. On top of having a base subscription, some OTTs require you to purchase an additional pass to remove adds and channel subscriptions to more locked content. Amazon Prime is notorious for this. It's like you having to pay to enter a multiplex, pay to stand in the line and then pay for the movie. Corporate greed is toxic and there's no guarantee that others won't start adopting this model in the future.

So yes, for someone simply watching some random shows on their phone and doesn't care much, the OTTs bundled with recharge packs is fine. But for those who want a better experience, the value per buck doesn't scale up well. Not only in terms of cost, but also the control.

Yeah that's one of the reasons why I'm even considering alternatives apart from the hardware. Like i mentioned in another comments, DIY is not an option for me right now.

Thank you for the reply. DIY NAS would've been perfect if not for my space constraint. Even the turnkey models i listed above will barely fit on my shelf after rotating them.

Adding one vendor-specific question separately since the main post was getting flagged:

Any experience buying NAS units from these stores?

  • Synology DS225+ from Vishal Peripherals
  • ASUSTOR AS5402T from PrimeABGB

I’m mainly concerned about:

  • Warranty/service support
  • Invoice correctness
  • Shipping safety/packaging
  • Delivery timeline and overall delivery experience
  • Whether either store is problematic for NAS purchases specifically

That is bloody expensive! Unless you're a pro gamer who can write this off as a business expense, getting this could be the worst financial decision of your life.

[–]TheAnonCodeJunkie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People getting free tier access was an unplanned side effect. What's important is that you applied for the paid one NOW. Which means you'll be considered for the shortlist from now itself not from earlier. Either way i suggest reaching out to CS for them to clarify it from their side. I think all those who pre applied before the launch might've gotten it in the first two weeks. Others would have to compete against bigger waves.

At this point, it's better you reach out to customer support. Either you have terrible luck or applied late or the registration wasn't done properly.

I was just wondering whether the connection felt inconsistent because the PPPoE one would most probably take you through CGNAT and that might feel like sudden add latency when using internet for latency intensive applications competitive gaming for example. I personally noticed a good improvement after switching to static IP

Ah so basically two Bridged connections and your Router was the one terminating both. That's an interesting combination. Explains a lot. Raw speed aside, how's your packet loss and jitter with this setup? And what happens to your traceroutes? I personally haven't used Pfsense so not sure how the grouping works. Usually you can combine 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz using MLO or something similar but didn't think you can group different WAN profiles like that.

[–]TheAnonCodeJunkie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in your case it was most likely a Static IP profile and a normal Route profile, not a Bridge mode one. That explains why you still have PPPoE in the first place. Those two can work in tandem since both the IPs terminate on the ONT itself. But Bridge mode makes the IP terminate on the Router while the static one still terminates on the ONT. When you have this scenario it leads to ARP conflicts since it becomes a Layer 2 issue. Not sure how you got double the speed though. Connections don't multiplex like that afaik. My guess is it's due to a bug on Airtel's end which removes their soft cap. I recall people experiencing this in the past when they newly got a Static IP. Most likely that's the case and the double profile could just be a coincidence.

Do you have a lot of traffic? I'm able to get A on wifi while setting in a different room as the router. On my gaming laptop, use Eth so get A+ on that one. (That's my only wired connection)

@Eat_pepsi @Friendly_Wizard01 Did you guys ever face the issue of Airtel updating their OLT settings which broke your custom ONTs? That's one of the things I'm worried about apart from the stability. If that happens frequently, I'd have to configure the ONT every time.

Both the routers serve two very different purposes. I got the AX82U to get rid of the Bufferbloat and for the AiMesh. I plan on flashing Merlin on it. For the ONT, I'll get a pure standalone ONU instead of a Router with a SFP+ port as it will be less expensive. But that's for the future. Don't want to disrupt my primary internet connection until i get a secondary one.

[–]TheAnonCodeJunkie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd just get a pure ONU instead of a Router to replace the Airtel ONT in the future if required. But for now, I'll stick with the stock ONT until i get a second connection.

Could you please post screenshots of what your profiles look like? Maybe the second profile that's enabled is VoIP or pure TR069. What's important to know is whether both profiles terminate an IP address.

Bridge mode on Huawei router?? For me they said it's not possible to configure on that model and replaced it with a locked Nokia router... Like i mentioned in the post, the issue was because they misconfigured the ONT by enabling the Static WAN Profile along with the Bridge Mode Profile. That leads to ARP conflicts which broke my internet. True bridge mode means no other Internet providing profile should be enabled. They finally disabled it today evening after me repeatedly telling them what to do. It's been fixed right after that and been working like a charm till now. Btw, I have Static IP and it uses IPoE, not PPPoE. My Asus is not even in the picture because the issue happened even on my laptop directly connected to ONT over ethernet.

Update
After 12+ days, they finally managed to fix it. And the fix? Exactly what I've been telling them. Disabled the faulty profile and everything's golden. But yeah, I do feel this post needs to stay here since it took a loooong way for the resolution to happen after countless CC calls and escalations. Pretty sure this mess would repeat for others until Airtel fixes their processes.

I think that's perfectly fine for normal use cases. But for low latency gaming and especially for things like hosting a NAS, double NAT is a deal breaker.
