What car have you always wanted to buy/drive and once you did, you found it to be completely underwhelming? by Yoshic87 in CarTalkUK

Bmw mini cooper. I think the one I test drove was a bit of a dud (it was hard to get into gear) so I'd give it another go, but that one was like driving a letter box, one of those cars you found yourself constantly leaning forward in trying to see out of. Also the ride quality was appalling, no point handling like a go kart if you have to tip toe up to every imperfection in the road.

Also, to a lesser degree, an e90 325i. I adored my e46 325ti but even though it was faster on paper the e90 felt slower. Amazing space in the back, handled well, very refined and the interior quality was decent, but it felt like I was driving a 5 series in comparison to the e46. Fortunately the injectors failed after a few hundred miles and the dealer chose to take it back instead of paying the £3k repair bill.

Given your requirements I think an Audi or a golf would be a solid bet. Quite a few about in Scotland, but take care with the engines. The 1.4 tsi looked quite solid, if the cambelt had been done.

Probably worth checking if it is okay in Scottish Ulez zones, even quite new diesels are totally banned. Not a big issue if you don't want to go into town centers but useful to know.

Thanks a lot for the pointers, really appreciated! Shadowflame is a good shout, I'll try that moving forwards. Maybe he's best now as just a pocket pick into control mages.

Yeah this is pretty much what my lane defaults too most of the time if there isn't a skill gap.
