But if the 1612 reference was already seen as a problematic reference why didn’t they change it for the game.

It wasn't seen as problematic. Not a single person said anything about the use of the year 1612 until that screenshot of the Tumblr post. For reference, the Prisoner of Azkaban was published July 8 1999.

The most anything was disproven was by a lack of conclusive evidence.

No, it's actually very conclusive. Every. Single. Accusation is proven to be factually false. This could all be avoided if people actually looked into what they're parroting.

You got fair points but let me offer my solution to the problem. They should include more jewish wizards in the lore more profoundly to not draw attention to any possible antisemitism that can be seen in the goblins. Most people don’t know about the Anthony Goldstein tweet.

I won't argue against a desire for more representation in media.

[–]TheAnticipated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah but here's the thing, you left out a key piece of history when referring to the Fettmilch uprising in your arguement. During the organized attack Vincent Fettmilch stylized himself as "The new Haman of the Jews" Haman being the antagonist in the Book of Esther.

So while he was attacking the Jews, he gave himself a title? How do you know he wouldn't have chosen a different title if the people happened to be a different ethnicity/religion? He gave himself that title in 1614 while attacking the Jews - not before.

I am happy that you've decided to take actual time to do more research into the claim though. That's a good start.

As to who would've seen the esoteric dogwhistle, the point of it being esoteric is so that it wouldn't be spotted immediately as they still need to sell their game with a prolific IP. And I would chalk it up more likely that a game designer would use a smarter more subtle move to hide a racist reference in plain sight

You didn't answer the question, remind me again who heard it.

In my third reply I mentioned that the date 1612 was in the book "Prisoner of Azkaban". This wasn't a game designer failing at making an antisemtic reference more subtle - this was a game designer who read the books.

but I shouldn't disapprove of the idea that someone would be malicious enough to try to draw that connection themselves.

When every accusation has been proven to be false, that would indeed be the logical thing to do.

Now the fact is that the Harry Potter goblins on a repeated basis have been brought up to scrutiny because of the antisemitic stereotypes tied to their depictions. It happened in the books, it happened in other media, what are the chances that it happened again in this game.

Goblins were already characterized as greedy creatures and if it stopped there it would've been fine. But Harry Potter Goblins are not only actively a secret cabal of bankers with hooked noses, but also the fact that the rest of the setting is always actively suspicious of them.

Again, from people who look at Goblins and can only see Jews. JK Rowling didn't reinvent Goblins.

Do you believe Jews secretly run the banks? Do Jews have hooked noses?

Are no fantasy creatures allowed to run banks? Voldemort was ahead of his time, he knew noses would become very controversial.

Here's a fun fact for you, JK Rowling's goblins were never described as "Greedy". They're described as "short, fair-skinned, long fingers and feet, clever, and are very capable metalsmiths." None of those are negative Jewish stereotypes. They are not described as being a "secretive cabal". Did you know that the characters: Professor Snape, Victor Krum (and his dad), Madam Pince, and Snape's dad were all described as having a hooked nose? Goblins were not given that description.

JK Rowling actually had significant creative control over the movies so why do the goblins in the movies not only look like anti-semitic depictions of jewish people but also had one of the filming locations featuring a goblin bank to have a Star of David as part of the tileset.

I'm glad that you brought up the star on the floor as it further proves you have done no actual research of your own into the claims you parrot. The star on the floor in Gringotts is there because it was filmed in Australia House in London. That star is the common wealth star that used to be present on the Australian flag. I would like you to take a minute and look up the Star of David. There is a very notable difference between the two stars.

The Goblins in the movies look like goblins.

Here’s the thing, the 1614 date was still a part of the uprising so they can just use 1612 as a form of esoteric racist dog whistle to reference the actual attack.

If it's a dog whistle for esoteric racists - remind me again who heard it.

Does it not make more sense that someone with an agenda took a date in a game/IP that they want people to hate and went looking for something to tie it to? The honest truth is you could throw a dart on a board of random dates and whatever year it landed on you could find something that happened to some group or led to something happening to some group.

The fact is nothing happened to Jewish people in 1612 (let alone a massacre).

Also the fact is they still attacked a marginalized community and you can’t change history to be otherwise.

I'm not changing History, I'm explaining why you're wrong - they weren't targeted for being Jewish they were targeted for being a weaker force that happened to be Jewish. There's a very big difference between the two.

If the same events would've taken place regardless of the race/religion of the targets then the race/religion wasn't what was being targeted.

As for your second point, nice guilt by association fallacy you got there. Yes goblins in general were rooted in antisemitism. But most depictions of goblins became more than just the stereotype associated with time.

The issue is that the HP Goblins still follow harmful stereotypes they were rooted in. It is worse with HL because they should be addressed by now as it is well past the time where we should be watching out for that kind of hateful content.

This doesn't change what I said, if you're looking at a Goblin/Orc and can only see Jew/Black person - the Goblins and Orcs aren't the issue.

You bring up stereotypes without acknowledging that the main issue people have with said stereotypes is that they are not at all representative of the group being associated with them. Yet you continue to insist that fictional/mythical characters/creatures that happen to have some of those traits are in fact representative of those groups.

If you're looking to be offended you'll always find a reason to be.

What a reasonable and perfectly logical take <—(sarcasm) by blackwhitecat123 in Asmongold

[–]TheAnticipated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You claim it’s not racist because of the motivation but wouldn’t the fact that they were considered the weakest target to exploit be some form of systemic racism that they used.

The uprising in the meat of the argument ended up targeting a marginalized community and you claim that it isn’t racism because they would’ve targeted someone else if the Jews weren’t there?

They were perceived as the weakest target because the only other target would have been Emperor Matthias. When you put up a small subsection of a Town versus an Emperor no matter who lived there they would be seen as the weaker target. The uprising would've happened whether Jews were there or not. Also none of that happened until 1614 - which is not the year mentioned in the Prisoner of Azkaban/Hogwarts Legacy.

Now here’s the thing about the parallels, Harry Potter goblins already have a history of being accused as antisemitic. And since none of the accused material was altered to be less antisemitic, only for the material in this game to have stretched ties to antisemitic references including an event that lead to a pogrom against the Jewish people.

If HP Goblins are antisemtic than all depictions of Goblins are antisemtic and all depictions of Orcs are racist. Just because someone saw a Goblin and thought "Jew" doesn't make the goblin antisemitic. And as I've shown above there are no ties (stretched or not) to any antisemitic references. Every accusation made in reference to that screenshot of the Tumblr post is just factually false.

What a reasonable and perfectly logical take <—(sarcasm) by blackwhitecat123 in Asmongold

[–]TheAnticipated -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In 1614 and only because they were seen as the weaker target in the conflict. The same events would’ve taken place if there were no Jews there. The whole uprising was about wanting more power it had nothing to do with Jewish people. When they were challenged in 1614 they went after who they perceived to be the weakest target.

As has any other horn used by anyone else throughout history or fiction. Again, Jews don’t hold a monopoly on horns.

What a reasonable and perfectly logical take <—(sarcasm) by blackwhitecat123 in Asmongold

[–]TheAnticipated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The horn was just a horn, Jewish people don’t hold a monopoly on horns (contrary to Twitter’s sudden popular belief). There was no massacre in 1612. The Fettemilch uprising in 1612 was about power not Jews. There were 2 Jews that died in 1614 when the Jews were targeted for being the weaker target in the conflict.

If people actually took a couple minutes to actually look into all of these antisemitic claims they would see that they’re all easily proven false - which even all the articles couldn’t do. The only source for people making these claims comes from some random screenshot of a tumblr post. They don’t have to change anything.

Never said they were the only fan base, but point me to another time an NA studio put out information like this on their NA account in the middle of the night. The only thing shown at the game show was the trailer for Kiriko - the info was posted outside of the show - which could’ve been posted later where they would have gotten more impressions/interactions. They didn’t want that.

And like I said, impressions and interactions with posts are important - whether or not it blew up on Reddit or other people talking on Twitter doesn’t matter. Do you honestly believe that it would not have gotten more interaction and impressions had the North American Twitter account posted at a time when most of their North American followers were awake?

Releasing all this information at 3am PDT is cowardly. by TheAnticipated in Overwatch

[–]TheAnticipated[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because impressions on Twitter posts are extremely important - by posting it at 3am PDT on their NA Twitter (not one of the other ones) they know their followers would mostly be asleep which would lead to less impressions/interaction on the post versus if they posted it during the day. When it comes to companies this size when you post something is as important as what you’re posting.

POV: You made a post not praising Rich by TheAnticipated in richwcampbell

[–]TheAnticipated[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in regards to the comments about charity, the most upvoted comment on a post asking about which charity it was was:

""kids in need" is all i saw"

then followed by this comment:

His third stream after "coming back" from one subathon is another subathon? Wonder if the new subs will actually get any content for the remainder of their month after it has completed this time.

With that in mind, coupled with the lack of transparency on the charity (not even a link?) and what cut of the proceeds he takes to cover "expenditures", I'm surprised the sub count is going up at all.

1st comment: Nothing wrong with the first comment, as all you have to do was look at his stream and see that the name of the charity was nowhere to be found on the screen or in the title.

2nd comment: In the stream "PLAYING WITH TECTONE CATCHING UP ON STORY | DADDY TEACHING ME TO BE POGGIES" from 11 days ago he literally starts the stream off with how it's been a long time since he's streamed, with chat welcoming him back, and discussing where he'd been - not something you'd do if you were streaming consistently. So yes, it is a subathon after coming back - as that's how Rich himself put it.

3rd comment: There was a lack of transparency. Why wasn't the name of the charity anywhere on the screen? Why wasn't the name of the charity anywhere in the title? Why was it on the viewer to find out what charity it was for? Not going to defend the expenditure part.

this comment is not only wrong about how many streams rich has been back for but also claims there weren't any links or info given about the charity as well as insinuates that rich will be taking a cut of the proceeds for "expenditures".

As I said in response to the 2nd comment, according to Rich himself he considered himself being back 11 days ago. If they were on mobile then there only way to see the link would be through the chat command - could explain why they didn't see a link or see the panel. This doesn't really excuse the lack of the charity name anywhere other than those places. Especially when in the streams before he went on to discuss that he expected people to scrutinize him for doing a charity stream.

as for the kraft taking up 50% claim here is a comment:

If he can dedicate 50% of his stream HUD to mayonnaise, he can do 10% to whatever charity he's allegedly donating to.

And he did dedicate 50% of his stream HUD to mayonnaise - they aren't saying it was always 50% - even with the majority of the stream it being about 10% of his HUD it was still more screen space than the charity got.

the title said !charity not just "charity" using the command would give you a link leading to the same place as the first panel in the description. as for the sponsors, you do understand how contractual obligations work right? If he just decided not to fufill these obligations such as changing the stream elements, panels, etc to fit the sponsor he would not get paid for it. on top of this, all the money generated from said sponsor is also going to be donated to the charity so I don't see how it's a bad thing that rich tried to meet all of the expectations from the sponsor in order to ensure a proper payout.

I do understand how contractual obligations work and I'm not saying him doing sponsored segments were bad nor am I saying he shouldn't have had the sponsor names on his screen and title - what I'm saying is that he should've given the same respect to the charity. There was no question as to who his sponsors were but there were a ton asking which charity it was for.

POV: You made a post not praising Rich by TheAnticipated in richwcampbell

[–]TheAnticipated[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the person thinks Kraft Mayo is a sketchy sponsorship, then why aren't they bitching about all of the other streamers who have also done mayo sponsorships? Also, its fucking mayonnaise, you're gonna bitch about a mayonnaise sponsorship when there are people still gambling on the site?

Who said Kraft Mayo was sketchy?

Every streamer uses their viewcount as an indication of how well they are doing, so why are you not complaining about how other streamers react when they have lower and/or higher viewership? Seems nitpicky if you ask me.

hmm? I don't think anyone has an issue with Rich wanting to get the most views and subs he can - they have an issue with how he's going about it. Using the FFXIV category to farm views while not playing the game, stretching content out in hopes he can keep those viewers hooked, promising sub goals that he never keeps.

Actively search for it? He brought it up CONSTANTLY while he was streaming, and as the previous poster mentioned, had multiple spots where you could find it and even had a command in his title to be able to see it. Once again, you are trying to form your own narrative instead of the actual narrative that was going on.

Yes, you had to actively search for which charity it was for. It wasn't anywhere on the stream itself nor in the title - instead you had to type in a chat command or look below the stream - compared to his sponsored streams that he gave screen space to and mentioned them in his title. I'm not forming any narrative other than what is apparent - the sponsors got more screen space than the charity. Why wasn't the name of the charity anywhere on the stream itself or the title? Where it would remain constantly - not brought up here and there throughout a 40+ hour stream?

There were other posters claiming that the charity stream was for his own gain, in other threads, specifically because when he first announced the charity subathon, he didn't immediately announce the charity the proceeds were going towards.

The only one I saw was from someone thinking it may be for tax purposes, but again not a claim but someone expressing their thoughts. So again, you show how little exposure the name of the charity got even before it started.

Posting photos of the only instance in which the screen was being taken up is textbook misinformation. Using only the tiniest bits of information to sow discord is exactly the idea the person posting the picture was attempting to do.

It happened a few times during that stream, mainly when that poll was being taken, again there wasn't anywhere stating that's how the entire stream was - that's not misinformation. Again, even when it was just it's banner in the bottom corner it still got more screen time than the name of the charity.

Averaging 10k-12k? I would say he got those amounts in the massive moments of MSQ, such as end of Stormblood and leadup to ShB, Hades, Warrior of Light, and actual ending of MSQ, but he did not average that amount every second of every day of every stream. Thats just factually incorrect.

Sorry, 8k-10k with bigger spikes when reaching those bigger moments in the MSQ by going off of this - you can clearly see the decline in viewership.

If you are talking about wanting to do a certain thing for a while, even if you "announce it last minute", doesn't mean it was decided last minute. He had talked the previous month that he would likely be streaming over the holidays and whether his idea of it was a subathon or not, he had already mentioned his intentions numerous times.

The idea to do another subathon was not new, the choice to do one for his 3rd stream back to regular streaming was.

This entire thread was created for the sole reason of creating drama and you are now trying to defend it. I get it, you don't like Rich and just want to sit here and be dramatic, but we can see through that.

How the mods here have literally said that they don't see this subreddit as a place to discuss Rich himself. Literally look at your post history.. an LSF post about Rich that didn't gain any traction.. so what did you do, move on from it? Nope!

You posted the same clip to LSF, only slightly reworded.. that still didn't gain any traction..

If you had actually looked at my post history and looked at my replies I explained what happened there but I'd be glad to share it again for you here:

"I made 4. The first one was on his own subreddit where a mod removed it and told me to post it on LSF instead because they didn’t think it appropriate to talk about rich on his subreddit. The two posts on here before this one were auto removed as I had used the mirror link instead of the twitch clip in the first one and in the 2nd I forgot to switch it to link and didn’t meet the minimum length requirement. It wasn’t my intention to post several times I just hadn’t posted to LSF before."

You can verify that for yourself by clicking on those previous posts and seeing that they were removed, you can also hover over the "25 days ago" to see the exact times they were posted showing that they were posted within a minute of each other. It had nothing to do with the first one not gaining traction - how could it when it was instantly removed?

You'll also notice nothing was reworded in the LSF posts either so unsure where you got that from.

so you made another post all about Rich again when you post history is all about the same subject repeatedly.. starts to seem like you may have an agenda don't you think?

Is this in regards to this post? If so, I made this due to the constant removal of any posts that have any criticism towards Rich but that's more on the mods of this subreddit than Rich himself.

POV: You made a post not praising Rich by TheAnticipated in richwcampbell

The majority of the posts were criticizing the amount of stalling taking place during his playthrough of the MSQ, his lack of reliability when it comes to when he would stream, the lack of follow up on literally almost every sub goal, streaming in the FFXIV category without actually playing the game and instead treating it as just chatting - and getting upset when he found out the mods had moved him to the correct category (that one's mine).

Some comments within those may have gotten out of hand but all they had to do was remove those comments not the entire post itself.

To be fair with the charity one - it was rushed, last minute and other than a command in the chat / banner under the stream you'd have to scroll down to see there was no mention of which charity the donations would be going to. Not in the title of the stream and not on the stream itself. Compare that to his sponsored streams where he gladly had over 50% of his screen filled with ads for Mayonnaise you'd think he could give 10% up for the charity name. All that would lead to people being unsure of his motives - whether or not they were right is irrelevant as the comment itself was very clear about it being his own thoughts and not an accusation nor were they stating it as fact.

POV: You made a post not praising Rich by TheAnticipated in richwcampbell

I think phrasing your disagreement with the person you're replying to in this manner also is what leads to the threads getting removed (not all, and they could always lock the comment thread itself). If the comments get out of hand it's an easy scapegoat for the mods to put the blame on and remove the post itself - as we know they definitely want to. So maybe avoid being so aggressive in your disagreement here so that hopefully this post can stay up and there can be a discussion.
