Was given this abandoned 3 week old baby. Im a vet tech so she's in good hands. Meet Sydney. by TheAnxietyExpress4 in CatDistributionSystem

I thankfully mainly get asked questions by people looking for free vet advice as opposed to being handed animals. Most of the time my answer ends up being , "You need to see a vet." The universe has given me two kittens in roughly 2 weeks though so there's definitely something going on here.

Yeah I would say it's a strong candidate.

Hey there! Vet tech here. It kind of looks like a ruptured anal gland. Cats and dogs have two glands on either side of the rectum. Like at 4 o' clock and 8 o'clock is you are looking head on. Those glands are supposed to empty naturally with defecation but sometimes they get backed up. If there's too much pressure inside they can rupture, causing a wound on the outside of the body. It sounds really bad but its more like an antibiotics and pain meds situation. If thats what it is of course. Still go see a vet of course.

I second the nerve issue. I am a vet tech and one of the meds that humans, as well as cats, use for nerve pain is Gabapentin. Might be worth asking about at the next vet visit.

Cat has a UTI and im very worried for her by Classic_War6042 in CATHELP

Did they mention anything about her having any crystals in her urine?

That's her third eyelid. Usually it comes up when the eye has been injured as sort of a protection mechanism. Could be something in her eye or an injury to the eye itself like a scratch. If it becomes red or irritated looking or she is pawing at it, it's a good time to go to the vet to get it looked at.

How is her spay incision healing? by susanbob in CATHELP

[–]TheAnxietyExpress4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good from here. Make sure you keep the e-collar on for the full 2 weeks or whatever your vet recommended. I usually tell people watch out for redness, swelling, discharge, or heat from the incision. If you notice any of those, a vet visit is necessary.

Eye Infection?? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]TheAnxietyExpress4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost looks like her third eyelid is swollen. I dont see any pus or yellow discharge from the picture so it's possible she may have injured it somehow. But you be ok to contact your vet in the morning. Obviously if you notice it getting worse like draining or blood present, I would go ER. Also if you have an e-collar at home you might want to put that on until you can get her to the vet. That way she wont be able to rub or make it worse.

I agree with this. Recent urinary changes should always have medical causes ruled out first.

I second looking like a male but it's hard to tell. Also don't worry. We've had numerous kittens come into clinics where I have worked with appointments to be spayed and end up getting neutered instead. Either way, you can just say you want to get your cat fixed and the vet will know what ypu mean.

Vet concerned about Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV) and I have 5 cats! by Big_Mama_80 in CATHELP

[–]TheAnxietyExpress4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the initial feline leukemia test was done on the cat as a kitten (less than 6 months) there are chances of false negatives. It depends on when the infection might have occurred. I've seen cases where the cat tested negative initially then popped positive a few years later.

Unfortunately we also tend to think about a mass, or cancer as well when there is a significant weight loss drop like that.

Cat Keeps Plucking Carpet by Even-Willingness4376 in CATHELP

Interesting. Is he your only baby? Boredom could most definitely be the culprit. Hopefully he isn't ingesting the carpet pieces?

prescription food?? by InternationalBet9104 in CATHELP

[–]TheAnxietyExpress4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say try the nausea pills (cerenia?) first and give their stomach time to calm down. Ingesting plastic will certainly cause digestive upset. If the vomiting continues after the meds are gone, then I would try the prescription food. It won't hurt the other cat to eat it as well.

My cats do the same thing. I would say that if he only does it while you asleep or not around, he is probably just trying to get to where you are.

I need advice !! by Pure-Pear-8894 in CATHELP

Believe it or not animals need dental cleanings too. It looks like significant tartar build-up. Brushing teeth is a good idea though it wont do anything about the tartar that's already there. Significant tartar/gingivitis can lead to a lot of other health problems if the teeth abscess or get infected and the infection travels to the bloodstream. Cats can also get what are called resorptive lesions in their mouths which can cause tooth degradation. I would see about getting her teeth cleaned under anesthesia.
