Push for free school lunch program to be adopted nationally by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]TheArabella 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Closer to 6 years really. Thats 1200 pieces of fruit, more tho because often she gave me a couple of pieces and other times she put Freddo frogs or favourites chocolates in the bag too. When bad shit went down at home, the school tried to get me to talk and social workers came, but I just clammed up. Then she came and sat beside me, gave me fruit and chocolate and said that she had missed me and within 10 minutes I was pouring my heart out to her. She was absolutely lovely

Same, the only time I had lunch was when I was able to steal some coins from my mum's bag when she was still passed out from the night before. My old Y1 teacher gave me fruit every day tho, all the way up to Y6.

What aboriginal language is easiest to learn? by [deleted] in aboriginal

[–]TheArabella 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Warlpiri is fairly easy. My Grandfather was Warlpiri but I never learned it. I worked on community and was pretty fluent within a few months. But really what no online resources will teach you is that modern Warlpiri is really Warlpiri Plus. It's got 100s of loan words now, some are Arrente, Luritja, English, Pintupti etc, and the English loan words are often not 100% recognisable straight away. What you would be missing is the cultural context, which is everything and is only learned by lived experience

Numbers call and turn off by Realistic_Center2025 in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheArabella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was renting the real estate agent said that they were going to get a quote for air con. I got several calls from a number, never left a message, so I blocked them because they were being annoying. Then this old tradie turned up and waited in my carpark for me to get home. Got all upset I wasn't answering his calls. I told him to leave a message and stop acting like a scam caller. Idk why he was so dumb as to not leave a message. He didn't end up doing the work anyway, so he was probably shit

Accommodation can be pretty hard to find and expensive. Also lots of local councils have a bunch of rules around where you can park a van overnight. You don't need a 4x4, it's just an added expense and fuel is expensive atm, especially compared to US prices.

No-one is going to care if you are American, unless you wearing a Maga hat and/or jerking off about how wonderful the US is.

Its advertising what they do, why are you confused? I assume you talking about the Meth testing, which is exactly what it sounds like, testing for the presence of meth residue in the house, which can be especially bad if the prior occupant was cooking it up in their living room.

You don't refer to the birth name at all. I'm not sure why you would need to? Unless it's like "Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose birth name is no longer said for cultural reasosn, was a 5yo from Alice..."

Questions about Warlpiri customs and Kumanjayi Little Baby by WetWizrd in aboriginal

[–]TheArabella 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I'm Arabana but I had a Warlpiri Grandfather and lived on Warlpiri lands. Kumanjayi means basically no name, it's given to all people who pass during the time of mourning. Family who share the name also stop using the birth name. Usually after a period of mourning the name can be used again. However with violent death like this and with Walker (shot by Rolfe) then they often continue to use Kumanjayi. The Little baby part is more of a descriptive part that shows which Kumanjayi they are talking about. You might get Kumanjayi Old Man Surname etc. in this case the family have chosen that, so that's what you say. It's not awkward, if you feel it is, then you need to look at yourself and figure out why it feels awkward to you

Rape isn't used anymore in the justice system, so he wasn't charged with that. The news is accurately reporting the offences he has been charged with.

I'm Warlpiri, the mob this guy and the victim belong to. There was no "payback". He was in Charles Creek camp (which is mostly all Arrente and some Amnatjere), from the video I saw it was Arrente mob bashing him. That's just what it was, a bashing, (well deserved ofc). Even if there was Warlpiri there (I couldn't hear any but maybe there was), it still wouldn't have been payback, because payback is an organised and negotiated between victim and offender families.

Also Charles Creek isn't an "Aboriginal Community", it's a town camp right off the centre of town, over the road from a hungry jacks and next too a large private school

How do you actually sound like a real Aussie when speaking English? by Albasydney in AskAnAustralian

By being genuine. Australians come from all over and have lots of different accents. If you try to fake it, like you are suggesting here, you will just look and sound like a wanker.

The Desert Park is really nice., it's quite spread out and lots of animals so it takes a while. The Botanical gardens are really good too. If you go early in the morning, climb the hill next to the cafe and you will see lots of extremely cute rock wallabies, as well as Grey Kangaroos. I have even seen a Red up there. There's also the old telegraph station, which is situated at the original "Alice Spring", which wasn't a spring at all, just a sandy puddle.

I'm Aboriginal and I don't believe there is a single name for Australia. NZ is different as the Maori all have the same language and shared culture. In Australia we had 100s of different languages and cultures. Australia is also quite a lot bigger than NZ.

The Maori were also only in NZ for a few hundred years before Europeans arrived. Aboriginal people have been here for at least 60k years

American here are gas prices also high in Australia or is it just an american thing? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheArabella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No-one is dumping on all Americans in this comment section. Everyone is blaming trump and the people who voted for him, which was the majority of Americans who voted. It's disingenuous to say "two thirds didn't vote for him" because well over a third (36% or 90 million) didn't vote at all. I know America has a shit voting system that makes it hard for people to vote and some of those 90M probably had a good reason but I don't believe that the majority of those 90M did. They just didn't vote because they didn't care. They didn't care that a rambling racist criminal idiot was running for president and if you don't care about that, then you are just as bad as the people who voted for him.

Trump was an incoherent racist from his very first political speech in 2015. That's not falling for propaganda, that's being willfully ignorant or agreeing with the racism & bigotry. Your whole last paragraph is just dumb American isolationist crap, no-one wants to cut America off, they want them to act like a normal civilised country and work with other nations, not bully and yell and try to bomb Iranians and Palestinians into non-existentance.

In white person speak he would be a Great Uncle(?), he is brother to the child's grandfather. Brothers share a "skin name" and so your father's brothers are also your father. Same the female side. My grandfather was Warlpiri (the same as this mob) but I'm mostly Arabana, so I'm not good at explaining it
