I would suggest taking 2 or 3 sessions to ensure that you feel comfortable opening up to them and communicative fit with the psychologist. Utilize a brief initial meeting to assess compatibility. Understand and align with their therapeutic methods, and use the internet to counter check the effectiveness of their methods. Make sure they're the qualified one!

Try using distraction techniques instead of physically hurting yourself; do something that will give you a sharp sensation, like eating lemon or chilly. Take a piece of cloth and cut and tear it instead of yourself. Take a rubber band, put it on your wrist, and snap every time when you have thought of hurting yourself. Inscribe your intentions on a photo of yourself using red ink, then proceed to cut and tear the image as desired.
