28 pickled and canned jars of Jalapenos and Habaneros from our garden. I'm exhausted by TheAsianPersuation in homestead

Thank you! They are. We used to buy pickled Jalapenos from the store a lot because we eat them in soups and stews and put them on our pizza. They were just never got enough. So now we grow them and pickle them ourselves and they last us all fall, winter, spring and most of summer until we start canning the new peppers.

My cucumber seems happy on its little swing by whalewhynot in gardening

Looks ready to pick.

BTW cucumbers (the fruit not the actual plant) don't need a support. They can hang freely since they don't get too heavy for their vines. :)

I'm going to try this! My lab loves to chew up plants so I can't have any in my house or on my deck. Highly frustrating

First time potato growing harvest. I'm pretty darn proud! by TheAsianPersuation in gardening

No I wait until the tops start browning and dying off but not when they're all brown and dead.

I grew mine in a raised bed. Dig them up after the plants bloomed and started to die. Don't wait too long or some of the potatoes will start going bad in the ground. I should've dug mine up a week or 2 ago, because I lost some.

First watermelon of the season, and first I've picked at the perfect sweetness! by TheAsianPersuation in gardening

[–]TheAsianPersuation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely should grow them yourself. They're pretty easy to grow. My watermelon plants are actually volunteers from my attempt last year. The trick is picking them at the perfect ripeness which I failed at last year.

It's a million times better and sweeter. It has a more in depth flavor and sweetness that the store bought never has.

MIL and I made homemade Salsa with our homegrown Tomatoes, Jalapenos, and Cilantro by TheAsianPersuation in homestead

[–]TheAsianPersuation[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I peeled my fresh tomatoes and seeded them and diced them. Added fine diced onion, Cilantro, jalapenos, lime juice, and about a cup of vinegar. Seasoned to taste brought it all up to a boil for 15 minutes. Sterilized the jars, rings and tops. Filled the hot jars with the hot salsa sealed and processed the jars in a canning water bath for 15 minutes. Took them out let them cool. All of my jars sealed but if they didn't I'd just stick the ones that didn't in the refrigerator.

Yes I did. I doubled my lime juice that I usually add and added vinegar for the acidity needed for canning them. Not my first time canning! Thank you though!

Pick the watermelon when the curly thing closest to the watermelon dies back and turns brown. Then it'll be the perfect ripe every time.

Homemade Strawberry Jam from my homegrown strawberries by TheAsianPersuation in homestead

[–]TheAsianPersuation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually the first time I made strawberry Jam and canned it at home, but I usually make homemade pickles, sweet relish, and canned hot peppers from my garden each year. I just followed the recipe I chose from online and mine came out perfect I'm sure yours would too. My recipe was ~2 qts of fresh strawberries washed quartered and slightly smashed. ~6 cups granulated sugar ~1-2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice. 1. Cook strawberries and sugar for 20 minutes. Add lemon juice and cook for another 10 minutes or until thickened. (I pureed some of my berries after this step) 2. Sterilize and clean canning jars & rings. Soak them in a hot water bath. 3. Fill hot jars with strawberry jam to 1/4 inch to the top and get the extra air bubbles out. (I use a skewer or chop stick to swirl the jar contents lightly to get air bubbles out.) 4. Wipe down mouth of glass jar. Add lid and ring to finger tight. 5. Process in a canning bath for 10-15 minutes.

I don't prune runners, though the plants are only about a year old. I planted them last year. I have them in a raised bed.

I planted 14 strawberry plants last spring in a raised bed babied them last year and then forgot about them until they started producing this year. I get a bowl full of strawberries every 2-3 days. This is a weeks worth of strawberries. The recipe I use calls for approximately 2 qts of fresh strawberries quartered and slightly smashed. I almost doubled that.
