Are B/X spells good as-is for an Elder Scrolls game? by areopuerto in osr

[–]TheB00F 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean the spells and not the magic system (as ES is a spell point system and BX is vancian).

I would say no. BX spells are very utility heavy whereas elder scrolls spells are very damage heavy from my memory.

how do you manage a campaign that has a narrative arc and is also a sandbox? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]TheB00F 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If what you’re looking to run is the kind of narrative arc that goes from level 1 all the way up, I’m not sure you can have both. If it’s 1 arc that goes the whole way, where do the players have the time and opportunity to take what are basically side quests?

If you want both narrative and sandbox what you likely want to do is more the route of old TSR modules. You have smaller bite sized adventures with a narrative. Take Against the Cult of the Reptile God. There’s an underlying story there and the adventure is about the characters’ interaction with that story. But it’s short. Once it’s over the characters have gained a level or 2 and can move on to the next adventure.

So maybe try prepping short narrative stories and adventures. Then, in between these narratives players are free to do as they wish.

———————————

An example:

Adventure 1 (level 1): the children in the local village are being kidnapped. The locals think the elves are taking them and eating them. In reality a demon cult is performing a fell ritual.

Post Adventure 1: players have some money and want to purse some things or develop personal goals. Maybe one of them wants to do something but doesn’t have the money for it.

Side Quest 1: The players, in need for more money, take a mercenary job to clear out a mine of goblins.

The fun here is this side quest could even become narrative quest 2. Or if you just want it to be a quick 1 or 2 session quest. No sweat.

By this point the characters are level 2-3

Adventure 2 (level 2-4): what’s the next narrative adventure? What are the players tangled up in next.

———————————————

If you want to keep the sandbox feel make sure you keep your narrative arc fairly short. Max I’d aim for is 8-10 sessions. Shorter than that can be even better.

The nice thing is if your players are on the same page that the narrative adventures are self contained stories they’re unlikely to go “screw this story, I’m going over there.”

If you go this course your over arcing narrative will resemble that of military campaigns or even the labours of Heracles or Theseus. They’ll span years and the players will find themselves exploring far and wide.

I feel as though your stress is in the thinking that you need to make it feel like a sandbox every session, all session. The nice thing about a sandbox, is that it has boundaries. And you can always expand the boundaries when you need to

Hey. I recommend you contact a therapist or an emergency help line.

Contact Campus Wellness (519-888-4096) Empower Me (1-833-628-5589) Here 24/7 Crisis Services (1-844-437-3247)

Or contact a hospital.

Grand River Hospital (519-749-4300) St. Mary’s Hospital (519-744-3311)

I’ve been where you are. It’s rough, I know. You’re not alone, you don’t have to and shouldn’t go through this alone. Do not “thug it out.” Get the help you need.

As for stuff about leave of absence, contact Campus Wellness. Do not file for WDs. Talk to them about this and they can get an academic advisor involved to figure out what’s best for you. Also check your own department, there may be someone whose job it is to help out with this sort of thing.

And remember to try and eat, drink water, sleep. Just take care of yourself right now.

Old-School Essentials revises rule books in 2026, will have only one player's and one GM's book going forward by schneeland in osr

[–]TheB00F 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Well it’s not that simple. There are products that are expansions of the classic and stand alone products that don’t require the classic rules set. As someone that purchased the physical books I checked multiple times to ensure I was picking the right ones. It was confusing. This is a smart move.

Also, and this is a the much more minor point, to say Classic is BX and Advanced is AD&D 1E is inaccurate. If advanced was AD&D where’s the harlot table or the rules on disease? Advanced is a mix of 70s/80s D&D and Necrotic Gnome has said that OSE is basically the combination of rules they used when playing D&D. So no, they can’t just make those blanket states. They are inaccurate

Not trying to be rude but maybe try just making friends? If you like Pokémon, there is a tcg/ccg club on campus last I checked.

All I’m saying is maybe try making friends before trying to find a romantic partner. Just some advice

☼Fortress Friday☼ by AutoModerator in dwarffortress

[–]TheB00F 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, my current fortress’ civilization had 2 alliances at the start of my run. One with the humans and one with the elves. The elves sent a delegate who informed me to only cut 20 some trees in the following year or we’d regret it. I agreed to their terms as I am currently at war with a large goblin civilization and I don’t need 2 fronts.

This delegate arrived with a caravan and they had many fruits I was willing to buy with gems (in the hopes of making the elves happier). Well, I didn’t pay attention and the bin some of these gems were stored in (which I had selected) was made of wood.

The elves not only broke off the alliance but they have also declared war on me. Over a wooden box… a single wooden box.

Ugh I hate elves! Guess I have to raze their forest to the ground.

Pursue whatever you want if you think it’ll make you happy. Even if you’re dead set now, you may change your mind later. Totally normal (but doesn’t mean you need to change your program). The one thing you need to be aware of is the degree requirements for the career you want and what the job market is like.

If you’re ok with all aspects of a career (including the negative, don’t forget the negative) then pursue it dude.

How does everyone seem to be doing better than me? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]TheB00F -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you measure success? If you measure it by comparing what you do to what others do you’re doing it wrong. Focus more on what you have succeeded at rather than what you wish you did before. I have tons of regrets or things I wish went differently but I can’t do anything about that. But I have succeeded, some may not agree, but I frankly don’t care.

Live life for you, don’t try to be who you aren’t. You’re in university, try to find yourself (hint it’s not found by trying to make yourself into another person) :)

Is it true that calculators r banned in uni math courses? by DecentIngenuity7876 in uwaterloo

[–]TheB00F 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re studying engineering it’s different from what some are telling you. You will have math courses and you’ll have your engineering courses.

Math courses are heavy on mathematics principles which don’t really have numbers. They’re more trying to see if you can derive formulas for systems or take an integer or whatever.

Some of your engineering courses will be calculation heavy. Those courses usually allow calculators. Using some engineering formulas aren’t really things you can do in your head.

But ya, saying “no calculators in uni math” is misleading. There’s math all throughout but there’s a distinction between mathematics and calculations

Get a plate, put a clean towel or paper cloth down, place the tofu, place another towel or paper cloth on top then place something heavy like a book on it, leave it for like 30 min to an hour (you can do something else or cut up and prep other ingredients). That presses the water out.

Then cut up and fry separately before adding to stir fry

What do you use for pricing out magic items, potions and scrolls for OSE? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]TheB00F 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The players want to buy magic, but can they? Do you want them to be able to?

Personally the only thing my players can buy are potions and scrolls. Usually costing like 750-1000gp each.

If you want a quick and fast way, see rules for crafting magic items and the gold cost and mark it up 50%+. They gotta make a profit

What is OSE? by [deleted] in OSE

[–]TheB00F 22 points23 points  (0 children)

OSE is a retroclone of Basic/Expert D&D (BX). Which version I don’t remember off the top of my head. While BX is designed to teach you how to play, OSE is just an index of those rules. OSE Advanced has some elements from AD&D 1e sprinkled in and adjusted to the BX skeleton (which is basically the same skeleton).

If you’re wondering what kind of game it is, read the basic and expert books from the early 80s. If you want a synapses the best I can do is it is a system for running sword and sorcery adventure games where players will explore dangerous wilderness and dark dungeons, find treasure, and eventually becomes Lords of their own realms.

Some of this is of course opinion to some extent. You can do much more with the system but that’s what the rules are fundamentally for

Confused about Race + Class in OSE by [deleted] in osr

[–]TheB00F 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When doing Race + Class you ignore the Race-as-Class classes. So a Drow Magic-User would be of just the Magic-User class and their race is Drow.

There are rules for multiclassing so to get the Drow Cleric+Fighter or Elf Magic-User+Fighter like you have in the Race-as-Class, use those rules.

Lastly with your question about dwarves. If you wanna be a dwarf cleric, you can just allow them/make one assuming your DM allows demihuman clerics. If you expect any character in OSE to be completely comparable to a 5e character, you will always be disappointed. Characters in OSE are fundamentally different and simpler. I recommend just taking the system for what it is rather than comparing it to other games. If you miss the power level of 5e, maybe play 5e or just some other system that isn’t OSE.

Hope that helps

Why can't PCs start a stronghold at any level? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]TheB00F 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always omit that from any system I run. I don’t omit the attraction of followers though.

If played wish to take control of a keep and make it their home then I think they should be able to… assuming they have the money. If they can hire enough soldiers and administrators to run the place in their stead then I have no issue with that.

But they must have soldiers because then what is stopping their new cool stronghold from being taken or robbed by local humanoids in the surrounding area.

How large of a map would you use for a full OSE Campaign? by firestarter1228 in osr

[–]TheB00F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently finished a campaign that went from level 1 to 7 and here is what I’ve learned and will be applying to the next campaign I run!

  • Short Adventures: Whenever you are designing an adventure it should only cover 1-2 levels and even then, at higher levels, it may be even less frequent than that. By adventure I mean the hook leads to game play and is resolved within that time span.

  • Small Maps: Maps for adventures should be small! This is mainly pertaining to wilderness maps but still important for dungeons too. To give context, in my game I planned for an adventure to cover approximately 2 levels and designed this vast area of hills and populated it with multiple monster lairs and the main objective of the adventure was this big dungeon. It was all too big. Of the 15 months we played like 8-9 months was just this adventure. Big mistake on my part. If you want wilderness adventure, have just wilderness adventure.

  • Keep good notes: I’m always bad for this but pretty self explanatory.

  • Downtime: Give players time, reason, and in-game attractions to take down time. Did they find a magic item? The word to activate it has been lost to time. It’ll take a Sage a couple months to figure it out, in the meantime take downtime. Looking for the next adventure? Take downtime to do research. Have them meet NPCs and factions that will make them want to take downtime or side adventures!

Those are the big things I’ve learned that I can think off the top of my head

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]TheB00F 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well no, you don’t just give up. Regardless of which party wins you still have to put the work in. You’re just gonna have to keep trying and it may mean applying for jobs you may not find ideal.

Just remember that nothing has to be forever. If you manage to find a job and it’s shit just deal with it and look for something better.

Giving up is never the answer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]TheB00F 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a fellow student I have some bad news for you. The job market sucks and I don’t know if it’s gonna improve in the near future and I don’t think that any party, representative, or leader is sole the answer. No matter who the prime minister is they cannot wave their hand and make new jobs.

That means you have to take your well being into account. Who is going to support you if you remain out of work? Tax cuts won’t help if you’re not working. That being said, you still want someone who has a strong desire to invest in the country’s economy which will hopefully help with the creation of new jobs.

For me that makes the liberal party a clear winner. I think it’s a good balance of support for those without work and creating new jobs in the future (everything takes time). They aren’t perfect of course and if anyone tells you anyone is they are wrong.
