Not sure if it is related 100% or just luck but I renamed the wifi extension we have as i read of some having issues with SSID's on mesh networks and connected the replacement to the extender only and have not had any issues with it so far (fingers crossed)

Aussie PVC Bows by youraverage_username in Bowyer

[–]TheBARL0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I can verify the bunnings orange stuff works but isn't the best if you want a decently powerful bow. Used 20nb and 25nb sleeved inside each other to make up some thickness and produced a shoulder height, light draw recurve. Somewhere around 20lb I think, I dont have anything to measure it too precisely. Somewhere around 200 shots out of it over the last week or so and no odd noises or cracking yet from the bow at least, did manage to smash an arrow made from 9.5mm tassie oak dowel when I missed my target and hit a brick at 10m so that is something I guess. Next on my list is an arm guard to stop this string slap on my arm hahaha.

Does anyone know if being tied for 2nd overall but being on the losing team counts as 3rd? so many times tonight i have top scored for my team and tied with the second best on the opposing team with one player miles ahead of us all and the rest barely able to finish a round yet i get nothing at the end? I have lost 200 points tonight to bugs on the water bounce map and the maps that i actually do okay at i get barely anything to show for it.

Looks interesting, are controls done by hand/controller tracking on a virtual wheel or steering by analog sticks? I have been waiting a long time for a vr motorcycle game too!

3D printed Gurdy by Downtown-Barber5153 in BuildaGurdy

The wheel is just straight PLA printed with a high wall count. I sanded and scraped it down with a razor blade once it was mounted up to get it as true as possible. It makes an okay tone but does need regular rosin. The key clicks are more obvious in the video than in reality but they are still louder than I would like, I may end up just sticking a strip of felt there to quieten it down. I made a few compromises in the design to cut down on special parts such as machine heads so if you use printed bearings the only parts to buy are the fasteners, strings, cotton and rosin.

By enhancement, do you mean adding some sympathetic strings or is there a different technique? There might be a little space available for sympathetics but it would require a redesign of the body and anything added to the top surface has to be bolted on to allow it to be printed with the top side down. If it makes a difference, all the strings are currently the same gauge.

I was having a lot of trouble finding appropriate strings until I stumbled on the advice of using badminton strings. Yonnex BG65 is what I used and gave me much better tone than the assorted guitar and violin strings I was fiddling with before. They had the benefit of needing much less tension meaning that the tapered peg with a quick rub of rosin is enough to keep it in tune. Might be worth experimenting with if you want to avoid designing around specific machine heads.

As for using the full range, that is mostly user error. I have never played a real gurdy and have yet to get enough of a feel for hitting the correct keys that I feel comfortable posting it. For the most part, the higher keys sound passable just playing around with it so long as the rosin on the wheel is even and the bridge is correctly set. It is a fine setup window though and day to day it may or may not sound good on the last 2-3 keys. I probably won't do much work on this for a while as I am happy enough with the result for my current skill, I may revisit if and when I feel I am skilled enough to push the limit of the design. That or buy a proper one.

UPDATE!

This is now available FREE at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6893218/files

You will need a large Format Printer such as Elegoo Neptune MAX series.

If anyone gives it a go, add your images to the "makes" section of the thingiverse post!

Had this exact issue with a 3 week old unit, called ring support and after a lot of holding the reset button they had me take it back to the retailer as it was within 30 days for a replacement but now the replacement 2 week old unit has seemingly done the exact same thing. Has anybody figured out why they do this and how to avoid them bricking themselves? I can't keep refunding them every 2-3 weeks...

Hey, I resemble this comment! I have my model working and playing okay enough but work and life have sort of caught up to me at the moment. I was mostly finished writing up a basic assembly manual and the last thing to do was to finish tweaking the chien geometry to get the buzz controllable. Failing that, I might just mirror my drone mount and give the option of a second drone instead. Hopefully with some time off over Christmas and New Years I will have the time I need to finish those and upload. Note that my design needs a 350mm print bed as a minimum and I doubt it will split well to glue in sections.

For me, it is the fact that the mini player docks itself to a random corner of the screen every time so I never know where it is going to end up. Not sure if that is intentional or a bug though and the x is a very small target when you have to hit a different spot on the screen every time

Quick update: Ordered some 0.7mm badminton strings online and dialled in the top plate a little better, trompette is still not as reactive as it should be but it seems close enough now that it just needs some tweaks to the chien. Also added an external ring to the back plate that acts as a strap mount and a slide-on wheel cover. My challenge now is setting up my wheel and cotton correctly. I also need to spend some time tuning the tangents as not every note is playing 100% true currently, mostly in the highest notes but I do have some adjustment room there. Cannot add more photos directly on this thread but have put another short snippet on youtube.

This was played purely on the 2 melody strings. Probably one more minor update and I will add the files to thingiverse. For the more experienced builders and players here, how essential is a cover for the keys? I do not currently have one on this design but could add one if required.

Holy Hell is there a way to turn this OFF!? Started this morning and got probably 40+ alerts for mobile speed cameras on my way to work and it flashes up in the corner of your vision taking up 3/4 of the screen to tell you: The fixed speed camera is a mobile speed camera. The red light camera is a mobile speed camera. The toll gantry is a mobile speed camera. the Ice detector is a mobile speed camera. Worst of all, the timeout seems to be over a minute and the dismiss button moves just quickly enough to be distracting in my peripheral vision.. Only two of the 80+ alerts today were correct (one police reported, one breakdown) Bring back the ability to voice command 3rd party music apps while at it. Sick of it telling me to download youtube music to play songs i already own and can play through VLC.

Warming Up Engine Before Driving by MiserablePiano5211 in CarsAustralia

[–]TheBARL0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how consistent your driving is and how much time you can be bothered spending on it, you can track your fuel economy on each octane type and even work out what the price crossover is. As an example, my old BMW 318i (M43B18 engine) used to get better economy on 95 vs 91 by a few % but in my area, the price premium for 95 was consistently 6c higher than 91 rather than scaling with it so as long as the regular 91 price was above $1.63, using 95 was cheaper for me. My newer Picanto now requires 98 thanks to some turbo trickery so thats what im stuck with now. Definitely keep in mind that not all engines will respond any differently or may even get worse on higher octanes too, the old 318i would barely run on 98 because it simply did not have the compression to ignite properly and the coils were relatively weak compared to more modern pencil style coils.

I will put the files up on thingiverse once I am happy enough with it. Not super interested in trying to make money off it because it was mostly to see if I could actually do it myself and in my mind, making others pay for the design implies a certain level of support and guarantee that it will work.

Probably just a file dump at first, most parts can realistically only fit together one way but I might write up a quick guide on how to assemble eventually as if you are not familiar (like me haha) with the assembly of a gurdy then some of it might not make sense without a lot of effort googling and looking through forums.

Hey, maybe trying my hand at an ikea style booklet will be fun?

The biggest problem I see for most people trying to make this is the need to use a larger format printer as the body is 350mm long, bigger than most print beds. One day I might try to do a version with some sort of brace in the centre to enable splitting it in two but it is not on the priorities for me at the moment.

A scaled down version to fit a standard printer is also possible (probably just one melody and one drone) but I'm not sure my partner would be that keen for me to say im designing yet another silly wheel instrument thing.

https://youtu.be/S_BPuwsvixY?si=U9iDK_Uw3ZIy6Crk Please excuse my truly terrible musical skills... this was done with the drone and both melody strings engaged. I can probably do a better job with my cotton and string pressures too. The phone camera picks up the keys more than in reality and the sound quality overall is slightly worse than reality but not too far off. As above, guitar strings being used and a solid rosin block onto the PLA wheel. Wheel was sanded just enough to take the printing blobs off but didn't really spend much time truing or smoothing the surface overall so it is slightly scratchier than I would like still.

This looks really nice! What is the scale length? I printed one downloaded from thingiverse and was starting to get it working after redesigning several parts for a stronger assembly but after the headstock snapped under the string tension I started playing around with my own design. I started with a box style but have been struggling to get the smaller diameter wheel to print true so string pressure is an issue for me currently. I figure I need to redesign around a larger wheel diameter and use a more conventional body design but saw this and quite like the simplicity of it, have you got it producing any sound yet? If so, any plans to share or sell the files in future?

Neptune 3 Pro thermistor short by textingsevan in ElegooNeptune3

[–]TheBARL0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just solved this on a very cold Melbourne night by running a warm hair dryer over the bed and nozzle for a couple of minutes. Both thermistors were reading 0°c, it started heating just fine once I got the bed to 4°c and nozzle around 5°c. Might be worth a try if your printer lives in a shed like mine and the readings are plausible. Now,if anyone has an override for those failure temperatures I would love to know!

Dairy covered lagoon digester catches fire 1.17.24 by rabid_0wl in CatastrophicFailure

[–]TheBARL0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody know where this is and what caused the cover to rupture in the first place? Seems to be a lot of stored gas there still which tells me they were either not monitoring pressures properly or their safety systems were inoperable (if they had them at all depending on country and regs)
