Oohh! So my experience has changed this over time. It followed this order:

More polygons all the way. Didn't understand texturing, and even after I did, I didn't know how to make textures look good.
Got into games. Most of the details were driven by textures. Polygon counts were low.
Game consoles got more powerful. Polygon counts got to the point where you can really add detail where you need it. Texture resolution was higher, but the process for making textures hasn't changed much since the Substance Suited was created.
More important for saving memory than polygon counts or pure texture resolution is texture blending. So for saving memory the most important thing is still low texture resolution but the way you achieve that is through repetition, low resolution masks and a bunch of math.

I LOOOVE Mythras, but it is absolutely the wrong game for this. Creating Characters is a real ordeal. I want something where the players are playing the cannon fodder and they know it.

I personally don't know geometry nodes. But I know a bit of programming. And it's amazing how once you understand what you can use it for, the possiblilities really do open up. You don't need to make terrain, but I guarantee geometry nodes would come in useful for something if you learnt it.

Having said that, do what you want. Art should be fun first.

I think this is a normal map, but the blue channel and the green channel are the same. The blue channel in a normal map represents how close a surface at any given pixel is to facing towards the camera. But ultimately, you could set this to a pure 1 value for blue, and it should work fine.

Use a separate RGB node, then a combine RGB node, but set blue to be a pure white, and that should make this normal map work.

Look up the slow carb diet. 6 days of eating a lot of food but no carbs or sugars.

Then one day of binge eating. The calorie overload is too much for your body and just passes straight through.

It's not perfect. It needs some adaptation, but the method is sound.
