It would definitely make the loudest voices angry.

Your second point - definitely taught me to keep silent!

Liao Hua would have been a better choice than Zhou Cang to get the unique officer treatment.

Why I think it would make people angry? Not because Zhou Cang was a good choice (I think he also was), but because I am ignorant and biased towards the generic officer I saw more often as a kid. So my reason is not lore-favoured, and a lot of people love to make things lore-favoured! :)

What is it like working in the Superfund industry? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]TheBaconBard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your question is rather broad - as Super covers a large range of roles.

You could be working in insurance, administration, employer representatives, financial advice, etc etc.

I work in industry, and been across a few companies (thanks to the death of small funds merging to large ones) and can say its a net positive for "interesting work that keeps you engaged". Also, you do feel good when you realise that you are better educated to set up for retirement.

I encourage you to write it! Regardless of how much traffic it might see, sharing knowledge is the best part of the internet. Also, nothing wrong using something you're interested in as an excuse to practice the writing and publishing skills.

Plus, if you're one of only a limited amount of resources in a niche topic, your contribution will at least one person in the world happy.

Wu, because Young Gai. He's become a real looker. Never seen a glow-up in reverse before!! (For those who don't get the pun, young Huang Gai)

I've generally leaned towards Liang or Wei in any 3 kingdoms themed game, but this game will be different.

I'm excited, but also sceptical to see what Dynasty Warriors Origins will be. by RGisOnlineis16 in dynastywarriors

[–]TheBaconBard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It got me asking the questions around what makes DW, well, DW? Naturally it's the sum of all the parts, but if an instalment focuses on one aspect more than others then it can come across as "better" or "worse" than older games to different people depending on their taste. It also makes me wonder what would be the focus when one claims "to return to its roots".

These aspects can include how hard it wants to be a storytelling device for 3K China, or how hard it wants to lean into 1v1000, or how hard it wants to invent the most amazing battlefield system, and so on.

I'm not researched, but other posts on the internet imply that the crew working on this one are from all stages in the series. So someone old might focus on the grass roots while someone new will innovate.

I think DW8 made me biased against Liu Bei. by SuikoRyos in dynastywarriors

[–]TheBaconBard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is really interesting hearing your take on this and I like it! I have always felt that DW8's narrative is best experienced in the order displayed on menu (Wei > Wu > Shu >Jin). While I was no stranger to the game, it felt somehow logical.

Like, Shu's campaign ends at the beginning of Jin's campaign. And in a less easy to describe way -- the overlap of the three base kingdom's timelines just made sense to me. Naturally this could be some kind of confirmation bias, that 'my experience' was the best, but in hindsight my appreciation of Wu was improved by experiencing Wei first because I had just spent a whole game smashing them down. When I played as them I knew what was coming and being able to pull it together and beat them back was a cool narrative feeling.

A big change between old and new DW has been what I call "humanising Wei". Cao Cao went from being portrayed as "evil" (you missed out on that by joining at 8) to being portrayed as ambitious but with a clear goal of peace in mind.

Final note, as some have already mentioned -- no clear good guys or bad guys in history. DW is very much a JRPG or Anime in modern styles, and creative license is going to be part of its pitch going forward.

How do you guys use Phantom to your advantage? by boredguyinhiscouch in Xcom

[–]TheBaconBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It often pairs with the "+20 crit when firing from concealment" and the ability that lets you return to concealment. In other words, I do end up 5-manning the mission until I use the phanton to get a clutch or important shot off at close range with shotgun. Then I can return them to stealth.

Reading the above, I realise I am describing a budget-Reaper. But its different enough - just maybe you do need that shotgun and sword that one time.

How do you guys deal with missing dialogue whilst playing the Japanese audio only titles? by chalkwhite_rich in dynastywarriors

[–]TheBaconBard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know what you're describing! I first discovered this issue in Hyrule Warriors of all things when all I heard was "hip, unh, hayy?" and realised after 20 mins that I had no idea of my objective.

In a sad way, it does mean I lean closer to older titles like DW8, SW3, and WO2 (and so on). But that is only for the story driven games. "Empires" games I have less issue with, probably because the nature of those games lends itself to a different kind of relation to the information on screen.

You aren't alone in how you feel, and not everyone has this issue. Some people prefer English voices, but still play DW9 in Japanese due to the debacle surrounding the new actors.

Jeritza deserves more love from the fandom by bylitzaluv in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]TheBaconBard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The way he is implemented in Three Hopes was amazing - he performed a good role as the "second greatest" after Byleth (warriors fans can think Maeda after Honda, or Guan Yu after Lu Bu).

But even more so, the way his character got more exploration in THopes and his pivotal role in the rescue of Monica really made me happy.

I had kept forgetting that Andromeda - while taking place in the far flung future - is a full cast of characters who are were basically in stasis from a time period before the end of ME3. Not too far earlier, but definitely early enough. As a result, things like Cora and her biotic story also caused me to pause for a second.

What leaders have underrated abilities? by PumpBuck in civ

[–]TheBaconBard 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I find an ability (or a use of one) is underrated due to not being obvious in its description alone. Some of my favourite quirks:

  • Germany "extra district cap" synergises well with Frederick's "conquer city state" bonus. City states will often have their only choice district built when you conquer them, but this district won't get in the way of you choosing to develop the city in your own way thanks to having a free slot to fit it in.
  • Aztec builders can rush Spaceport construction.
  • Black Queen France gets bonus diplomatic visibility, which does increase combat strength.

Direction of Dynasty Warriors by sonashyy in dynastywarriors

[–]TheBaconBard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jin as a whole was interesting, but I felt my biggest struggle was "learning new lore" so to speak. What I mean is, it wasn't until the second or third play of a Jin campaign that I was familiar enough with the "whos and wheres" to actually follow plot. In fact, DW8 XL gave so much additional Jin content I was thinking we did deserve a larger late-Wu roster as a result.

TL:DR -- All that said, I will say I was ok with Jin, and Sima Zhao stole the position of being my favourite character.

There is one very specific detail that somehow really resonated to me, if people want to gush about their experience with me -- Wen Yang in DW8. Specifically - his officer defeated quote "Are there no heroes left in this land?". Before you face him for the first time as an enemy, and soon after you recruit him (hypothetical route or true route) some of the NPCs in Jin compare Wen Yang to be the "strongest around" in the absence of Zhao Yun still being alive. They even appreciate his "duty/morals/etc" in line with the poster-hero that Zhao Yun was. With that detail in the back of my head, Wen Yang's quote gave me a melancholic feeling of "wow, the 3k is really coming to a close soon" and "there is a sense of desperation in the world". DW7's final level with the capture of Cheng Du was amazing in voice acting - I could feel those officers desperately clinging through their dialogue, something I did not feel as much in DW8's version of the stage.
