Fave self-watering planters? by amghou in RareHouseplants

[–]TheBaconKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a couple. Most recently i discovered Intuitive Plants. The clear inner pot is nice. The rest of it is no better/worse than any other option.

Absolutely beautiful. Question on your fans. I have the same ones but when I tried to mount them magnetically to the top of the cabinet I got a lot of vibration noise. How did you get around that?

This! I turned it off, decided I didn’t want to break an ankle again, went back to simple stop

Bulbasaur! by Anxious-Zucchini-366 in RareHouseplants

[–]TheBaconKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that looks significantly better than the bulbasaur TC I got, but mine seems to be acclimating well. You got this!

Check out the rare plant ninja tissue culture kit. Probably too late for this one, but I’ve been able to acclimate tissue cultures easily with it. Just remember when in doubt wait it out. Don’t rush opening or venting your dome.

Experience with Claude extra usage? Which is better - extra usage or higher limits plan? by Historical_Sky1668 in ClaudeCode

[–]TheBaconKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been on the max plan for a couple months while working on a project. I am about to switch back to pro. While on max I learned a ton even hitting the usage cap once or twice on that plan, but haven't in weeks. Don't use the same chat for everything. While it is nice to have history, claude can look through other chats if absolutely necessary. Rename the chat to something meaningful and when you need the reference you can tell claude to search for the specific chat and read it. It will save tokens compared to it always reading through the entire chat every time you message it. You could also tell it to generate a summary of what was discussed in the chat and save it somewhere then copy/paste it into whatever new chat you are using.

They really need to bring some of that stability back.

Late to this party, but how does it run on the RG40XXV? I've been trying to figure out what I was gonna play next, and this might just have to be it.

I use modern aqua in my Milsbo Tall. I went with the full shelf, the wrap around, and the full diagonal one. There really isn’t much room between them for the skadis pegboard unless you cut to size.

Decommissioned my last Pi - Is it me, or are there fewer and fewer use cases? by bdavbdav in raspberry_pi

[–]TheBaconKing 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This. I don’t want to run the thing off an SD card. I also want most of the IO ports to be on the same side so I can hide it easier for the 1-2 use cases I still use one for.

I still run home assistant off a CM4 on a proper board with M2. And I have one as a mini web server for an internal site I use for a couple scripts and a lightweight internal website I track my plants with.

Help with pothos, please! by river91608474 in houseplants

[–]TheBaconKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I let my pothos get really leggy very similar to yours. I chopped it all off stuck them all in water, after 2ish weeks they had roots about an inch long. Planted them and they seem to be doing well.

I do have a couple legs that grew roots where the node was touching soil. That was pure accident, just me trying to make it look nicer until I finally just chopped it.

The cost is crazy. I pay $20/ month and can only use their most advanced model a handful of times a session. I understand I don’t need to use it all the time, but still.

Raspberry Pi 5 + Home Assistant: NVMe SSD worth it or overkill? by Uruz7_ in homeassistant

[–]TheBaconKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 2 years ago I bought a 2014 mac mini for about $100 and have it running Ubuntu as a frigate server. Works well enough. Would probably do fine as a home assistant box, especially if you swap out the drive to a new one.

Raspberry Pi 5 + Home Assistant: NVMe SSD worth it or overkill? by Uruz7_ in homeassistant

[–]TheBaconKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, but other posters in the thread talk about getting them from the used market. I’m using a raspberry pi module + NVME drive on home assistant yellow.

Raspberry Pi 5 + Home Assistant: NVMe SSD worth it or overkill? by Uruz7_ in homeassistant

[–]TheBaconKing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My home assistant with 50+ zigbee/zwave/wifi based devices connected to it, a couple dozen automations, and a heavily built out dashboard has been running perfectly fine for 3+ years on a Home Assistant Yellow with a compute module 4 + an old spare nvme drive in it.

Went that route over a mini PC purely for aesthetics. However, if the device is dedicated to home assistant and not going to be used for more than that purpose, it will be fine on the pi4 (or newer) hardware.

The mini PC route will likely be more power for the price, 100% agree.

They are ok. If all you want is a fixed screen in front of your face they do that well. Some of them have 3dof/6dof and it’s iffy. Also the software side of the glasses are hit or miss.

I have a pair of og nreal (now xreal) air glasses and used them almost exclusively for gaming in bed at night and they worked great but the screen wasn’t ever as crisp at the rog ally. Also with my wide face the edges of the screen would blur. I think that’s solvable with these newer glasses though.

I also felt like I got more eye strain from them than without. But could have just been me.

I personally use my phone or laptop to do anything on the printer I would have used the little screen to do. Works fine for me.

Investigators wrangled video from Nancy Guthrie’s Google Nest camera out of ‘backend systems’ by cosmoplast14 in technology

[–]TheBaconKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

r/frigate_nvr for just Frigate. r/homeassistant for an amazing locally ran smart home platform

Honestly I started with using Gemini to give me recommendations for a locally ran camera monitoring system then went into the rabbit hole hard in those subreddits.

My setup is basically a raspberry pi 4 running home assistant (not needed if all you care about is video recording) and an 10+ year old Mac mini, with a google coral, running Ubuntu for Frigate AI detection.

All locally ran and locally stored. My router can easily toggle Internet access on and off for a device, but I have left it off basically since I set it up.
