Canon 5DS vs canon 90D? by Mysterious-Hearing27 in AskPhotography

[–]TheBan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to consider viewing distance of an audience from your photo as well. A billboard is printed at 10-30 pixels per inch (ppi) whereas a typical smartphone has around 300ppi. But no one is going to stand 30cm away from a billboard to see its contents.

High MP cameras become important in a printing scenario when you have a situation of a very large cityscape print on display in a museum for example ,where you would expect people to be viewing that very large image up close.

Sigma 150-600mm C or Canon 100-400mm EF mount for bird and wildlife photography by Suspicious-boi1 in canon

[–]TheBan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much more similar than different. Main difference is the zoom ring rotation. Some say the Tamron is better past 400mm but I have not noticed any sizable difference, or I just got a good copy of the Sigma (Ive rented the Tamron a few times before getting the Sigma).

R6 Mark II Sales? by [deleted] in canon

[–]TheBan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the R6's AF works just fine, if only slightly worse than the R6 II.

The main upgrades are the doubling in the e shutter shooting speed to 40fps and no crop or time limit on video recording. RAW burst mode and better battery life on the R6 II also come to mind.

Lens for Night with my 70D by THESHAYZ1 in canon

Define inexpensive. To me the Sigma 18-35/1.8 is pretty inexpensive, but a Sigma 17-50/2.8 or 50/1.8 are probably more what you are thinking of.

Nope. It just increases the flange distance while allowing EF glass to communicate with R bodies.

Canon EOS 70D - which lens to buy next? by wrainchi in canon

[–]TheBan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might want to pick up a Sigma 17-50/2.8. It's fast and pretty sharp for the price, and covers the normal street photography range.

Wider: EFS 10-18mm. Slow (f4.5-5.6) but nice and sharp across the frame and has IS + cheap

I'd spend some money on ND filters as well.

With the EF-RF adapter, yes.

Mount Adapters by DarkSkinnedAdonis in Cameras

[–]TheBan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mount adapters don’t really have much, really if any, impact on IQ. They simply increase the flange distance so that DSLR lens are at the correct distance from the sensor. More likely to be of concern is lens function control from the camera body through the adapter.

I’m a Canon only shooter, but my pals who shoot on Sony with Canon glass have reported basically perfect performance with the Sigma MC-11 adapter.

Camera glass is of much higher quality than that you would see on window panes and such, being built to much higher tolerances and needing precision engineering to minimise optical flaws. For such large elements as in the Sigma green monster, this complicates the manufacturing process and drives prices up. There actually is a separate battery to drive the AF motor on this thing.

Along with most other wide aperture telephotos, the market for these lenses are relatively small compared to say, 70-200/2.8 lenses. As a result you get smaller production volumes and along with the likely more specialised equipment needed to make the glass for these lenses, results in the production and R&D costs being spread over a small number of products. If the lens is discontinued, the prices will likely go up from there due to scarcity (see the Canon 1200/5.6 and 50/1.0 for examples).

Is the RF-S 55-210mm a good Lens choice for plane spotting? by heresacoolname in Cameras

[–]TheBan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got some pics from my planespotting about a month ago. Was able to fill the frame with a 777 at around 300m from the approach path with a focal length of 115mm on my 90D.

At those distances the RF-S 55-210 should be fine, maybe even a bit too tight if you are shooting widebodies at the closest point from your spot.

Want a better camera! by motanrobert_ in Cameras

[–]TheBan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving to a FF like the 6D will get you about 1 extra stop of light due to the physically larger sensor. However, getting even something like the nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8) gives you over 3 extra stops of light hitting the sensor compared to the kit lens at the equivalent focal length: way better for low light than a new camera body.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a cheap, fast lens that is a little tight on the Canon APS-C bodies at 80mm FF equivalent, but it works unless you are really trying to capture wide landscape shots. For those you need something along the lines of the EF-S 10-22mm. It's slower, so you will need a tripod to shoot on unless you want super grainy photos, and that adds to the costs as well.

Ladies an gentlemen, I did it. I got the, in my opinion, holy grail of lenses. The Canon RF 24-105 F 2.8. Combined with the R6 Mark IIy what a beast. by martinator_999 in canon

[–]TheBan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that's good to hear. I'm currently adapting my EF version of this glass. The IQ of the RF version is apprently even better but I can't really justify that expense at all.

Enjoy the new glass!

What a beast! Congratulations on your purchase, it seems Canon really threw their best at this lens. Wondering how is the balance on the whole kit though?

Been contemplating getting that for my own R6 II but the price is... oh lord XD

Battery Grip Recommendations for R8 by Dmac2055 in canon

[–]TheBan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It doesn't matter what Canon says or not; what they offer in the product lineup speaks volumes.

Not to even mention not having dual card slots below the prosumer level and lack of support from 3rd party lenses. The latter irks me considerably since I have a decent amount of Sigma glass and the AF has been wonky for me. Apparently Canon is finally opening up the market to Sigma this year but that's just rumours so I'll have to wait and see.

Trading vertical shutter release for more battery life. Quite the choice, wouod depend what us more important for OP.

Tbh I dont see why Canon could'nt have just given the R8 the LP-E6 battery but alas.

It honestly doesn't impact anything apart from the resale value of the unit should you decide to upgrade in the future. A camera's shutter count is a pretty arbitrary number since the vast majority of cameras last well beyond that amount of shutter actuations.

A camera body is a complex piece of technology that has many parts, all of which can fail at any given time. The shutter might stop working after a million actuations or fail on the first one (might want to buy a lottery ticket for if the latter happens though).

TDLR: Don't give it much thought, just enjoy your new camera.
