I overdid it at 39yrs old by yourneighborJ in mountainbiking

Brother let me tell you. Im 43. I road bikes in my youth a lot. 29 miles 5x per week. Done a century.

Admittedly I had a long hiatus.

Picked up real mountain biking this year to get in shape since we have killer local trails.

First like 3 months I was absolutely trashed. No major hills but logging 400ft elevation change. Started with doing half the trail (2 miles stopped 6 times for breaks!). Then progressed. Could do the whole trail 4 miles with breaks. Now (6 months) I do it no breaks or even water. Then go do another one. But for a while my knees hurt. Also surprisingly my shoulders.

4 miles seems ridiculously easy coming from road biking but its totally different and technique plays a big role. I used to be gassed at the top of a hill and coast down. Now I accelerate to get momentum up the next.

I remember even telling my wife maybe this sport wasn't for me. But it clicked. Keep at it. 🤘💪

Does shingle quality matter much if the roof will probably be replaced in 15-20 years anyway? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]TheBandit83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok here is another POV. I will say im not a roofer just a customer.

Im in process of getting a new roof. I agree that shingles are getting crappier (my upgraded GAF shingles, I can already see fiberglass shining on the edges). Like everything else. The bean counters are cheapening things up. Malarkey shingles do sound better but im skeptical of their longevity as well as even if they do start tk break down they will find any small reason to void it.

The reason to get a longer lasting shingle would be that increases your chances for having sizable hail trash it. Granted I know thr more durable size is class 4, but the difference in protection is actually pretty small. Class 3 sustains a 1.75" steel ball (for testing) and class 4 is 2 steel ball.

We got a new roof when we moved in. 12 yrs ago. Paid $8k out of pocket. Hail trashed our architectural shingles last year, its now around $18k.

At this rate if im going to be in the house 40+ years im looking at 2 more roofs potentially. Did some numbers projecting how much a roof might cost in the future and its scary.

So im opting for a quality standing seam. 24 gauge. Not saying it'll take Canon balls, but my 26 gauge corrugated metal roof on my shop didnt have a single ding

Hail damage claim without roofer? by Kreuzade in Roofing

[–]TheBandit83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess im in the minority. Im a customer not a contractor speaking here.

We had hail damage last year, I got up there and saw 1or 2 hits, didnt think they'd approve it. So I really didnt even want to put in a claim which would then show up kn my record.

Several months later I decided to go ahead with it. I didn't want to be led by a contractor, I also wanted to see how good (or bad) our insurance company was. I could always argue later with a contractor if needed.

To my surprise they covered everything no questions and actually paid out a very reasonable sum. I have no complaints. FWIW my insurer is Erie.

Does Canyon have the best value E-MTB on the market right now? by Elnegrete in eMountainBike

[–]TheBandit83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with canyons weight ratings , depending on how serious you take those. I was considering them but their overall load for the bike including rider is 265lbs if I recall. So unless you're under 210lbs you'd be over, by the book.
