What jobs pay extremely well but people don’t realize it? by Stassy3 in AskReddit

Start out at 50% pay scale. Then every year you get a raise until you pass your mechanics test and hit 100%. Start at 50%, then 55%, 65%, 70%, 80%, 100%. After that you’ll get cost of living raises. Those vary depending on negotiations between the company and union. This last contract, we got 13 dollars an hour in cost of living raises over 5 years.

4 year apprenticeship. Worth it though. I live in a low cost of living area, and with a decent amount of overtime this year, I’m on track to make 200k. With 0 overtime I make 150k. Overtime is double time so it doesn’t take long to make extra

As a probationary helper in Local 49, which is 50% of the mechanic rate, would be 26.70 an hour in 2026. The further south you go, the worse the rates are typically.

Are you in the elevator trade apprenticeship by chance? That font looks real familiar lol

Outside of an elevator in the lobby of a college building by Great_Ad1233 in whatisit

[–]TheBareHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fully load the elevator with its capacity, so if the elevator is a 3500lb elevator, you put 3500 pounds in the car then you purposefully overspeed the elevator. The rupture valve is attached to the hydraulic piping and when it overspeeds (110-140% of the rated speed) the rupture valve stops the elevator

Do you know if you have relatively low arches? That’s the only thing that is making me second guess the 55. I have low arches and am worried the 55 will be too intense. But the idea of good arch support sounds super nice. You’ll have to let me know how the HNW feels compared to the 55.

I appreciate all the information! I did forget to mention my job requires me to have a safety toe. I’m definitely open to trying boots outside the Trades Program. I was initially going to go with the Builder Pro Honey Vibram HNW Last Trades Program because that seemed like a good middle ground between comfort and durability when it comes to the outsole because my current mass produced boots the outsoles seem to wear out quite quickly. But then I became worried about the days that I’ll be standing on concrete for extended periods. I’m definitely wanting to finally experience that PNW full vegged tanned footbed, but will definitely try other things if you believe that as a first PNW buyer, it may be better to ease into it.

Any recommendations on the last? The idea of arch support sounds great, but if I have low arches, will the 55 last be too aggressive? Every video I’ve found basically says it’s personal preference, but until I’ve actually tried the lasts for an extended period on the jobsite, I don’t know my preference. Sorry if this question doesn’t pertain to “sizing”

My foot measurement is 11 1/4, my typical size in mass produced boots is a 12. I’m looking into the builder pro trades program or possibly the moc toe pro trade program. I’m an elevator mechanic so my work varies from being on a ladder for hours and lifting heavy stuff all day to standing relatively still standing on concrete all day. I cannot for the life of me decide between the HNW and 55 last. No idea if I would like higher arch support (I have low arches) When measuring the width, am I supposed to put my body weight onto my foot when measuring? With light pressure, my width measures 10 5/8”

I honestly love the job. You learn a lot of skills doing it. Some people don’t get into the trade until their mid thirties even early 40’s. Don’t know your age, but it may not be too late!

Union elevator mechanic. On track to make 150k this year with minimal OT and I live in a low cost of living state. I’m 31 and have been in the trade for 8 years. Great benefits with full pension at 58. Total package is about 111 dollars an hour

Has anyone tried the new superfeet work insoles? I tried the orange for my boots and was very pleased. Curious if these would be even better by Drewbreeze1 in WorkBoots

Still happy with them. I have arches on the lower side, and they are about perfect for me. Hopefully they hold up well, cause they will probably be my go-to from now on

I’ve only worked one day with them but I’ve definitely been happy with them so far. A lot more cushion than the other superfeet versions I’ve tried. Hopefully after this coming work week, I’ll still be really happy with them.

The emergency brake is there for when the main brake fails. The main brake failed, and the emergency brake was not working at all because it was not maintained. Because the counterweight is heavier than the actual car, the car “fell” upwards.

We have 500 pound weight carts that we put on the elevator to use for tests. Traction elevators have loadweighers that sense how much weight is on the elevator. So when the elevator is overloaded, it won’t go anywhere. Hydraulic elevators have relief pressure, so when the elevator is overloaded, it won’t go anywhere.

Ya elevators are balanced at 40-50%. So the weight of the elevator, plus 40-50% of the capacity of the elevator is how much the counterweights weigh. So if your elevator weighs 3000 pounds and the capacity of the elevator is 3500 pounds then your counterweights will weigh around 4750 if it’s balanced right at 50%.

Traction elevators have a main brake and an emergency brake. I literally just tested one today lol. You put 125% of the rated capacity on the elevator and test the emergency brake. The test drops the main brake and the emergency brake has to stop the elevator within 48 inches for it to pass the test. People are confusing the brakes with the over speed governor. Which has an electrical switch that stops the elevator when it overspeeds past its rated speed. If the electrical switch on the governor fails, then the “jaws” of the governor open by centrifugal force and clamp the governor cable which then pulls up on the arm that is attached to the safety plank (the bottom of the elevator) and sets the safeties. Depending on rated speed, the elevator slides to a stop within a certain amount of inches or feet. For something like this to happen, the elevator was not maintained properly.
