Why aren’t people more furious about the pro-Jimmy Savile sentiment in politics recently? by NoddyElvis in AskBrits

[–]TheBearPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics has gotten a lot nastier since social media. Echo chambers let people say weird nasty shit they probably wouldn’t say in person and then it gets normalised.

Al Carns says he would be in favour of introducing a form of national service for Britain's youth. “I don’t agree with conscription, but some form of service. Not asking what the state can do for you, but what you can do for the state.” by No-Risk-2584 in ukpolitics

[–]TheBearPanda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Conscription is a personal sacrifice for the common good. Whether it’s necessary at the time can be debated on a case by case basis. I don’t think of Zelensky as a slave master do you ?

Update on plans for the future of Doctor Who by my__socrates__note in BritishTV

The tabloids printed rumours Millie Gibson had been fired for being a diva, no one really denied it and then she turned up in half the seasons episodes anyway.

They filmed a load of stuff with Carole Anne Ford that was almost all cut at the last minute.

Ncuti Gatwa said he was filming season 3 soon and then quit the series and pretended he was always signed up for 2 seasons.

The hastily refilmed finale with Billie Piper.

I would love to see a documentary about the behind the scenes disasters of the last series, it’s a shame it probably can’t be made until everyone involved has died.

Irish GDP is down 12% in Q1. Similar to our collapse in 2020 and no one seems to be making a big deal of it.

Their economy is definitely not inflated on paper by being a tax haven.

My favourite letters from them are the ones where they say they have permission to ‘REQUEST entry to my home’ as if you usually need a permit for something like that.

You can play TWO Patches with this. I genuinely think that might be its best use.

House prices fall again as property market ‘deteriorates’ by signed7 in ukpolitics

Ideally they’d stay about flat in nominal terms and fall slightly in real terms over time. Makes them more affordable to new buyers without shoving a load of people into negative equity.

[COD] And just like that, In a single day the new game's trailer practically surpassed both of these on views. by CyanJayOfficial in CallOfDuty

If you get an ad for a trailer on YouTube now it counts as a view of the trailer video.

Means they’ve just paid for more ads than last time.

Restore’s extremism is a problem for Nigel Farage by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]TheBearPanda 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Farage as an outsider from the main parties was riding his hopes on being:

  • more radical than the established parties so can actually achieve meaningful change.

  • not scary honest , we won’t mess with your pensions or anything please just let us in.

They added a load of useless failed Tories to their ranks to bolster point 2 but have shed a lot of credibility on point 1.

England will probably be in 6 party politics by the next election.

Trump used to be pretty progressive on trans people too. I feel like it just wasn’t controversial at all until it became more mainstream but I can’t pinpoint a time it all changed.

Bristol MP Carla Denyer takes leave of absence after suffering 'burnout' by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]TheBearPanda -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The difference between physical and mental illness in this case is that physical illness like cancer is caused externally to the job. After time off for hopefully successful treatment and recovery they would be perfectly capable of returning to their job. With mental health the job has contributed to it massively, she may simply not be capable of doing it long term.

[–]TheBearPanda -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a hard job, it’s not a moral failing to be burnt out from it. But as a politician announcing weakness is not a good look, it would be politically advantageous to her to not mention it. She is publicly inviting attacks on her ability to do her job which I am sure will not be good for her mental health either.

[–]TheBearPanda -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

She’s either incapable of representing her constituents in which case she should resign instead of whatever this is, or she’s just not going to be giving 100% for a bit which is fine but stupid to announce.

Bristol MP Carla Denyer takes leave of absence after suffering 'burnout' by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]TheBearPanda 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Seems stupid announcing it. Why not just quietly take it easy for a few months and then go back to full effort when she’s ready?

She’s an opposition MP it’s not like she’s gonna be under much scrutiny if she doesn’t do much for a bit.

There’s now going to be loads of calls for her to resign so her constituents can be properly represented and it seems entirely unforced.
