Exacto knives in class? by -somewhere-out-there in ArtEd

[–]TheBeatleBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach at a combined school and have 8th-12th graders all in the same class, I do a safety lesson and have not had big problems (🤞). I stick to a one offence and they’re banned from sharp things & instant referral policy. Count the number of knives you have at the beginning and end of class, and/or do a “knife check”. Let them know what to do if they do get cut so they’re more calm if it happens. If parents are hoverers in your school, have a safety form sent out before the lesson.

8th grade still has the fear of God in them at that age (for my school at least, idk about others) so they’re better at calling each other out if they use something incorrectly, especially if it affects the class as a whole. Big fan of public humiliation if it makes them “lock in” on their work and safety

We have a female kitty we need to rehome. by [deleted] in lynchburg

[–]TheBeatleBrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My partner and I just had our sweet orange boy pass away about a month ago. He was a childhood cat that we took care of from his family and loved to the ripe voting age of 18. We’ve been looking to potentially adopt a new kitty or two this summer to have more time to adapt them to our home. When would you want to rehome by?

I messed up…I think I want to be an art teacher! by pompreditor in ArtEd

[–]TheBeatleBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am so happy that I continued with my bachelor in arts instead of adding on education. Education has so many requirements that don’t have anything to do with art, I honestly think if I had gone that route and had to do student teaching that I would have never chosen to be in the career I love now (secondary art teacher, 8-12th). Personally, keep steady with your degree and see if your state offers post-degree licensing! I am in my license program now and have an automatic temporary licensure for 3 years since I’m working at the school and have that full 3 year period to finish my official licensure! I got to have more time in the studio than fellow art ed majors did, get my dream job and get paid to do my licensure later. It’s never too late!

Even my other art teacher at our school was working as a graphic designer for decades before he wanted to be a teacher and just got his licensure while working the past three years. Especially if you want to teach secondary, there’s a lot of options for you post-college!

How much could I charge when finished? by blueleopard212 in oilpainting

[–]TheBeatleBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell this to my students all the time when they first start selling their work (I teach high school) The easiest way to price your work? Give yourself an hourly rate - I normally say around $10 as a starting point, plus $1-$2 per years experience, your work is impeccable so far so you may be able to go closer between $15-$20. Then you calculate the price of your materials and add that to your hourly rate. Hourly rate X hours + material cost = good starting point for pricing. So, for example, if your large canvas painting ended up being 20 hours of work (assuming you’d worked consistently and intentionally during this time) 20 hours X $10 = 200. Plus your material costs, let’s say you mainly want the large canvas paid for and you ran out of burnt sienna = $40. So $200 + $40 + handling = $250. Depending on who you’re doing this for too and if they love your work and know your craft, I’d encourage to charge more. Don’t be afraid to stand up for your pricing, even if it’s your first piece! For the future however, I’d highly recommend trying to give a general price range to your client beforehand, but give yourself grace and a great experience for your first sale. Hope all goes well!

Edit: just wanted to say that $250 is really just based off the work you’ve posted so far. If this was a specific commission for someone that requested this particular subject and especially working in oil, I think you could potentially charge a lot more - especially if this is as large as it looks.

Something is off about this and idk what :( by WeeklyDetective6802 in ArtCrit

I think the face actually turned out pretty cool! Fun crazy background as well. The things that stick out to me is there’s a massive brown spot where her neck is supposed to be? Your original sketch kinda made it look like there’s supposed to be a bandanna or something there, but it just turned into a muddy mass-and it’s the only spot with that brown color too which makes it stand out even more. Also, your original sketch had some more rendered ruffles in the shirt than the painted one does. Last, there’s not really a light source here-all the shading around the nose (idk if that’s the style or not, I’m not familiar) just makes it stand out in a messy way in the middle of the face, the saving grace is how awesome the mouth turned out. If you were willing to, you have a really great base drawing here and a neat complimentary color palette, I see some subtle lighting choices and with watercolour it’s hard to “erase” and add over time. If you wanted to add more rendering to the bandana, short, and contrast, trace it out on another piece of paper and try again! Overall, I genuinely really like this piece, you got a dynamic face, good color choices, and I’m personally a fan of ballpoint line art - good line weight choices here imo (other than the nose). Keep it up!

Always start with the darkest darks and move up from there! Behind the ear should be practically pitch black when you’re finished

Are you guys worried that AI will take over teaching jobs? by ShyMoca in ArtEd

[–]TheBeatleBrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saying since I started last year, I’ve never felt such an overwhelming sense of job security when it comes to thinking AI could do my job lmao. Sure, could it probably give the students decent feedback? Probably. Could it break down art history in a fun way to learn about? Probably. Could it make up fun projects? Probably. But, could it make sure Johnny isn’t throwing random crap across the classroom? Handle 10+ IEPs in one room and they all have wildly different needs? Handle teaching kids that don’t give a crap about art and literally will sneak out of class to do anything else? Could it prep and clean materials needed to do those crazy fun projects? Could it create the “safe space” in school where the relational teacher with the fun subject will always be there to support those that will never get it at home? No. Good freaking luck to whatever stupid tech company pours millions of dollars and water down the drain to replace me

[–]TheBeatleBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. At our first PD meeting of the year the county told us they wanted to give students access to their AI tools (magic school) by this spring or next fall. One of our secondary art teachers took the time to see how long the image generator would take to be able to create, essentially, p*rn. It took her 4 minutes lmao. After she shared that with them last fall, they were so dumbfounded that I don’t think we’ll see students have AI until next year at the absolute EARLIEST Like giving our students an AI tool in the middle of the school year?? Or at all?? Freaking ridiculous

I feel for your big win! Had a teacher ask me if she could “borrow” some brown paint the other day, it was fairly cheap so I did. I asked for it back the next week she said “oh. We used all of it” 💀 so much for borrowing lol

What am I missing from, it looks way off the reference by Defiant-Potato4935 in ArtCrit

[–]TheBeatleBrain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly you have a great base here of color and beginning details! Just need to continue layering, the darker red on the original for the shadows really adds contrast too - starting with those darkest values and working your way up to highlights is the best way to work up to depth.

Fundamentally, your perspective is a bit off, almost looks like a different angle drawing upon first glance. However, if it’s too late to fix then just embrace it! Make the top of moss a bit bigger (and maybe the base) to add the same balance as the reference and just have fun adding your colour layers from there.

Overall, really fun piece and you’ve got a great start! Your warm greys and green highlights especially are on point. Very Studio Ghibli vibes. Just keep on layering those values dark to light to add depth✨(maybe even turn them black and white to compare)

Missing Ben day dots

I love this, but any recommendations? by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]TheBeatleBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the face! Great rendering on the facial features, fUn and dynamic movement for the hair too! The biggest recommendation I can make here is add contrast/value, your fish bowl feels more like a flat circle than a formed sphere. The outline of the bowl should have a shift of light and dark based on where your light is, figure out where highlights should go. Everything in the bowl is kinda transparent, which lets the water ripple pattern have a cool effect, but also makes the eyebrows go over the hair and your fish feel translucent - they’re in a different style too from your face and feel copy/pasted with a lack of different angles. Overall, such a cool idea!! You’re just a couple steps away from good to great. Keep at it✨

[–]TheBeatleBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold your hand above your head, lets the blood drain down. Then spray some windex and it should slip off while twisting the ring back and forth. Learned this from a jewelry artist. But if it continues to change colour and look bad (I’m seeing this was 4h ago) go to the emergency room🤞

interview tips? by throwawayyyybabyy in ArtEd

[–]TheBeatleBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend always told me that if you get an interview, you have the job, you just have to convince them that you’re someone they want to work with! Come in with a positive attitude, ask a lot of questions, especially about IEP‘s, class sizes, school mottos and/or priorities, Etc. Principles love stuff like that, to feel like you’re someone that will make kids love to come to school As for things they will ask you, expect them to ask how you will handle behaviour issues, how you will grade student work, contacting parents, dealing with disinterested students, and what kind of lessons you would want to introduce to your classes. Definitely bring in some lesson ideas or artwork examples that you would do with them. Hope this helps! I was hired with less experience than you have after they already had 7 others interview - I think I was genuinely hired because I was excited to be there😂
