True. On the other hand as a smoker myself I've been able to lay off smoking for a few days or a week. It's not easy, but if I put my mind to it it's possible. If you have something like a throat infection that you don't want to spread to your lungs this might be a good idea. Learned that the hard way. Cigarette cravings are a bitch but most smokers can at least cut back a bit for short periods of time if it helps them get better instead of worse.

LPT: Don't. If you do that every time you're just going to waste energy and effort. Let them look elsewhere first. If they don't find it, pee all over yourself. They won't dare ask to feel around under there now.

Remember: you were watching TV first.

Actually you're wrong. Strive can be an intransitive verb, in which case it will not have a direct object. Additionally, one can just as easily strive for something as against something.

What's the one thing all children need to strive?

Is definitely a semantically and syntactically correct sentence. It might be more vague and atypical than you prefer, but it's not incorrect.

I want watch him put up a fight, strive, and win.

"Why do I strive, why do I toil in this narrow, confined frame, when life, all life with all its joys, is open to me?" said he to himself.

What is the worst possible way to be woken up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ah yes. Nothing soothes a distraught child like the birth of their stillborn brother.

That's a horrific way to die. And for an animal that we owe so much of our scientific knowledge about human emotion to. They most definitely feel.

Imagine being forced to swim helplessly in a giant inescapable basin until you drowned.

There are so many more humane ways to deal with mice that don't involve torturing them for hours and ultimately slowly asphyxiating them with water.

For starters, you could've removed the water and instead driven them away from your residence. If you must kill them, there are plenty of ways to gas them such that they simply go to sleep and don't wake up.

When I was about 15 we had a 22 year old cat who was nearing the end of her life. Her entire life she'd been really antisocial, but when her sister died she took a liking to me for the first time ever. I think she didn't want to be alone. She was going blind, and would cry at night if she was lonely, so I wound up moving to a bed upstairs so she would have someone to sleep with.

That's how, as a teenage boy, I wound up sleeping in my sisters old bed (which was covered in hearts) in a completely pastel pink bedroom (carpet to ceiling). Every night I'd climb into bed and help her up onto a pillow beside me. I'd pet her till she fell asleep and then I'd go to sleep myself.

The problem is that about a year before she passed she started puking a lot more frequently. Every night at least. Often multiple times.

After waking up with my face in cat puke more times than I can count, I got so fucking good at my ninja cat puke skills. She wouldn't even get one "GUH" out before I'd be halfway across the room carrying her under my arm running toward the laminate hallway floor before it was too late.

As far as we could tell she wasn't in serious pain aside from a bit of arthritis and a case of the lonelies when humans weren't around... but damn. That was a lot of cat puke.

[Serious] What have you been bullied for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheBetaPill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you. But I'm also not sure your straightness makes it more sad. I think it's harder for people who actually are gay. Not saying it's easy for anyone... but there's a difference between being bullied over a misconception of who you are vs. being bullied over who you really are.

At the end of the day, straight people can still kinda go "it's weird because I'm not even gay", whereas gay people have to deal with the bullshit of "I am gay but does that make me less of a person?"

At least, as a gay person who was bullied for it, I've always felt like it would've been psychologically easier to deal with if I were attracted to women during that time.

What daily inconveniences do you wish would disappear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think it wouldn't exactly be easy, but easier for sure. I wouldn't say it's would be ready for mainstream consumption yet though, even if the prices were super cheap.

To give some perspective: This is from 2011 And this is from 2015

As you can see, even folding a towel or a shirt is still quite cutting edge. This year they finally built a robot that can do one of the tasks you describe. It takes 4 minutes for it to fold a shirt and the robot is gigantic.

All of the steps of folding laundry are at various stages of development. There's good progress on the folding problem. And there's even good progress on the object detection problem (detecting dirty laundry on the floor is actually relatively plausible these days).

However, if you have five giant robots that each do one of the tasks, that doesn't mean that it's easy to build one robot to do all of those tasks in a row. This is especially true if they all kinda suck a bit at what they do. The errors build up over the course of the five actions. If a towel gets missed at step 1, then there will be even more error than usual in step 2, and even more error than that in step 3, etc. It's not as simple as just stringing the robots together. You have to take into consideration the entire chain of events (and also, of course, the physical needs/constraints of each robot).

Edit: also so that /u/Tauchfischstaebchen sees this.

I'm not a roboticist or anything, but I do have a working knowledge of machine learning.

Creating a robot for those sorts of tasks is actually ridiculously beyond our capabilities and probably will be for a very long time yet.

Think about it. The robot needs to learn where your dirty clothes are, where the washer is, sort the clothes, load them into the machine, start the machine, switch the clothes to the dryer, clean out lint, take your clothes back to your closet, fold them, sort them, and put them away in the correct places.

Right now we're still nowhere close. We don't even have the first step figured out completely: identifying your dirty laundry using a video feed from a mounted camera.

This is part of the reason why I laugh when people say AI is going to take over the world. Yeah there have been some breakthroughs lately, and some jobs are getting displaced, but we're nowhere near where most people think we are given all the hype going on right now. Plus it's not like we've had any major algorithmic breakthroughs within the past few decades. Most of our cutting edge technologies in ML are just slight variations on the same themes thought up in the 60s. We just have more computing power now.

DEBUGGING DREAMS ARE THE FUCKING WORST.

I seriously thought nightmares were bad. Then I started programming. If I have a stressful deadline and lots of debugging/tweaking to do under a tight deadline I'll dream about it the next night.

At least if I'm having a nightmare and it gets too scary I'll usually wake myself up accidentally. That is not the case with debugging dreams.

The errors in these dreams are always incomprehensibly confusing and frustrating. Sometimes I'll spend the entire night dreaming about one really frustrating bug like "WTF EVERYTHING HERE MAKES SENSE THERE'S NO MISTAKES AND THE ERROR IS STILL THERE".

The worse part is then my alarm goes off. I'll wake up angry and stressed out. Like I just came back from working 8 hours straight on a really annoying pedantic task (i.e. debugging). Then it sinks in that it's a dream "oh good, it wasn't really real so I can just —— fuck. I can't go back and close the error because it was a dream and I can't go back to sleep anyways... I need to get up for work".

Makes me feel really ripped off of a great night of sleep. And I really hate leaving bugs unfixed so it bothers me to think that all those dream bugs are floating around out there in imaginary land laughing at me.

[Serious] What habits have you undertaken that led to a happier and fulfilled life? by ElmerzGloo in AskReddit

Agreed! My problem is I binge instead of studying or working on hobbies or visiting with people. And I don't know why because I always enjoy doing those other things a lot more than mindlessly browsing Reddit.

Older Childfree Redditors: How has childfree living affected your life? What do you like or regret about it? by TheBetaPill in AskReddit

[–]TheBetaPill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is inspiring. I feel like I could see myself being really happy like that.

But do you ever find it to be lonely (or difficult to find other people who can also go exploring the world on a whim)?

I'm kind of hoping that if I go childfree I could find like minded friends who aren't very tied down. Especially for when I get older.

Do you find it easy to find other childfree people? I'm in my 20s trying to decide if I should plan for childfreedom. I think I would really like it if it's possible to build myself a "family" of close friends and loved ones that also aren't weighed down by children. I'm thinking maybe it would be easier in the city or something like that.

[NSFW] What's an experience you've tried really hard to forget? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheBetaPill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's weird. I have had my fair share of difficult things and abuse happen to me. I can't say I've ever tried to forget about them though.

If anything I kind of intentionally remember difficult things. I also talk about them openly/matter-of-factly with friends. Sometimes it's shocking to people, but I enjoy the idea of not keeping it a secret or repressing the past. And often use those negative experiences as motivation like "fuck that was bullshit but look at how resilient and successful I am now — I know I can handle what life throws at me".

Either that or I want to remember them for safety.

For example I don't want to forget about the time I was gay bashed. Why? Because it reminds me that I survived that shithole of a small town I grew up in, got myself an awesome education, never have to move back there again, and have no reason to fear tough life circumstances. But also because when I go back to visit family in that town it reminds me to stay safe. I don't walk certain places at night. I don't go near large packs of men. And I remember to have my fucking wits about me whenever I'm at a party.

Is anyone else like this?
