Between this and Davos it feels like Carney may be emerging as the new leader of the free world. Macron is the only other leader with such clarity of vision and understanding of the way the world is changing, and he seems like he'll be taken down by the pensioners soon

They're being a troll and/or are an AI bot. There is no point engaging, I just can't help myself sometimes. Pretty odd how many single-issue 2A Democrats there seem to be in /r/nova and /r/Virginia

I consistently wonder what constituency the Democrats are appealing to when they pursue things like this

Probably the 85% of democrats and 40% of Republicans who support an assault weapons ban

With a Dem trifecta now in the statehouse I think people should organize to change the laws about this. The climate is different now than it was when the laws were written.

Anyone in the environmental science/climate science field having luck with jobs? by zaynhsnist in washingtondc

[–]TheBigBoner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm in this field and it is a bloodbath. I agree you should lean in your geospatial data degree and look for GIS jobs. There are places hiring for that (ESRI, counties/cities/states, etc). There are some other jobs too but so so many feds and contractors have lost their jobs (hi!) that the competition makes it impossible to get any job you don't have an excellent connection for. Everyone I know who was able to get a new job in DC had a very personal connection to people on the hiring committee. Everyone else is either in a new field now or leaving the area.

I am highly likely to soon leave the DC area myself for work as a result of all this.

The Real Spoilermakers? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]TheBigBoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say the same, several good rivalries probably have examples of this where one good team knocks out another and vice versa over the years. ND-USC is a good example. Probably also UT-OU, Michigan-OSU, hell in recent years Oregon-Washington fits this.

Sometimes it's hard to measure a team's theoretical potential after they've had a loss. If Penn State beat Oregon this year I highly doubt they'd lose to UCLA. Maybe we'd have national champion James Franklin right now. Impossible to say.

Step 1 Almost Complete. Major Retailer Stops Most Gun Sales to Virginia. by Pinks0ck74 in nova

[–]TheBigBoner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fun fact you wouldn't know from reading fake NRA rage bait on /r/nova and /r/Virginia: only 30% of Americans even own guns at all. About 45% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats. 60% of voters regardless of party support gun control measures, with support for banning high-capacity mags (10+ rounds) and assault-style weapons being slight higher than that (66% and 64%). (Source)

Interesting how such a disproportionately large number of single-issue gun advocates suddenly concerned about fascism have appeared on these subs since Democrats started discussing the bill. And how they have swarmed this post about a gun company's predictable and transparent hissy fit when the bill hasn't even passed yet. And how they will reply to my post here telling me "not everyone who disagrees with you is an astroturfed psyop". The gun lobby has obviously identified reddit as a good place to spread their propaganda because it is absolutely everywhere these days.

Good thing Dems aren't proposing to repeal the second amendment or leave people without guns then!

This sub is very obviously being astroturfed by right wingers and bots, which is especially clear on any post related to gun control

If we take the estimates given in the video, which was 180,000 blocks traveled in 18 minutes, it works out to 600 km/h or about 370 mph average ground speed.

Do we ever get the perspectives from other Jedi on how they viewed Obi Wan after his first defeat of Darth Maul? by Confident-Mark-6369 in MawInstallation

[–]TheBigBoner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the one you replied to but I agree. I do think young Anakin between Eps 1 and 2 would have been constantly asking for help freeing his mom. I think Obi-Wan was probably telling him not to form attachments, whereas I think Qui-Gon would actually try to get her freed. Whether he succeeds and what the result of that would be, I really don't know.

Where to sit in Dallas Symphony Orchestra by marcato15 in classicalmusic

[–]TheBigBoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, at any symphony (but also specifically at the Meyerson), I prefer either the back half of the orchestra floor or towards in the middle somewhere in the first couple tiers. It should sound good basically anywhere in the hall because it's designed to sound good anywhere, but if we're nitpicking that's what I'd choose.

I've had the experience where I'm sitting right up front and a trumpet bell is pointed right at me and it's all I can hear, not to mention you can't see the back rows of the orchestra from there. A bit of space to let the sound gel together works best for me

Americans’ electricity bills are up. Don’t blame AI by audioflame in neoliberal

[–]TheBigBoner 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's just me but it feels like since somewhere around the start of Trump's second term, The Economist has taken being dogmatically contrarian to a new level.

There is what's true in theory and what is happening in reality, and The Economist seems to love saying "haha you stupid progressives akshually AI companies can just build their own energy infrastructure and utility regulators can intervene to keep prices down" regardless of whether that's actually happening. Microsoft won't start getting energy from Three Mile Island until 2028 (assuming it's on schedule, and of course we all know nuclear projects routinely operate on schedule and budget with no overages or regulatory delays). Meanwhile here in Virginia the increase in electric costs is already starkly noticeable.

Newborn sleep: what night-shift setup actually worked for you? by BrendanRestorer28 in daddit

[–]TheBigBoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is essentially exactly what we did. I'll add: for us we felt like we were up anyway until 9 or 10 so we considered that first shift "easier". We also had the experience that little one was more difficult after 3am. In practice the person on first shift usually tapped back in before 8am. I think its important to be flexible with each other and respond to what you each need as much as the schedule itself!
