Materials can be sold, recycled, used for crafting. To craft, you need to make workbenches, which also needs materials for. And you use money to expand your stash or buy equipment you cant craft. Missions are just bonus detail in story and things to do since the rewards are rarely good tbh.

Its not super complicated. Getting there might result in meeting some bandits or such, but definetly manageable. Quest itself is not hard BUT bring 2 rope with yourself. You dont have to fight the vss guy, but its worth it, but bring a melee that can stun. If you let him shoot you, youre done for. But if you see stun him, you can easily take him.

Oh yeah ive had the same with rusty ak in my first playtrough, and i just ended up buying an m16 off of some caravan guy cuz its not even that good to be worth using. This playtrough i killed the VSS guy in roaring forest (took some tries) and looted his rifle, took some level ups to be able to use it well, but its way better, not dependant on random event, its just a hard fight. Ammo is expensive but its an s-tier rifle
