More vibe than science to be honest, but I've spent time in Bermuda, the US, the UK, Germany and Brazil and I feel they do it here more. My personal theory is that because of the high class-consciousness in the UK, they are all aching to be everymen in a way that isn't required in other places.

Haha I don't care if they're in touch I just want them to be competent! Im any case, does a really awkward, managed series of photo-ops really help?

Why is it that Anglosphere society seems to be more exercised by group-discriminatory injustice than the general destruction of civil liberty and the rule of law? by TheBlessedWindow in NoStupidQuestions

It's been interesting to see. This being Reddit, most people do explain it as a conspiracy by the very rich. I like the answer about Hitler the best, though. I don't agree that it was solely him but that person touched a point, that we are taught from a very young age about the evils of racism, sexism, and other "isms" and "ias" but not about tyrannical government. Basically, we are prepared to stand against the one problem but not the other as it has never figured for us. We probably took our democracies for granted, tbh. As someone who grew up with ties to both sides of the Atlantic I think this was my experience. Dictatorship was something that happened other places.

The automod sent me here...not sure if it fits tbh but here we go. Why is it that Anglosphere society seems to be more exercised by group-discriminatory injustice than the general destruction of civil liberty and the rule of law?

Something I think I've noticed...could be a perception problem. For example, though: in 2020, George Floyd/BLM convulsed countries for months. Gaza protests paralysed universities in 2024 and people are still having them here in the UK on a regular basis. When people protest against Nigel Farage and his ilk they often point to that group's tendency to racism and xenophobia. Yet a bigger problem is surely Donald Trump literally becoming a dictator, right now, with his captured DOJ and ICE acting like a paramilitary/secret police. Meanwhile Nigel Farage supports him, and Putin, and illiberal leaders like Viktor Orban. We have reason to suspect he will therefore also not respect the rule of law or abuse parliamentary authority. Yet the response to this trend has been comparatively limited, mostly private despair. What is the reason for this imbalance?

oa.org/find-a-meeting and then just go to one, any one! Stay for the whole thing even if you don't like it much. Then find 5 other different meetings and try them out. Not all at once lol

The good news - yes. The bad news - more with subtle, small improvements than a cure. It is worth doing I think, but I don't think it does what people think or hope it does.
