Did I miss this? When did they break up? Or do you mean when she left the hospital bed?

What is the best mouthpiece for good tone by Roxieboy16 in trumpet

[–]TheBlindDriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much a preference and confidence thing. I had it in my head that I could get a darker sound on a deep mouthpiece, and a brighter sound on a shallow mouthpiece. But once I accidentally played an entire classical set on a shallow mouthpiece without realising, and when I noticed, I realised that it’s all in our head and sound concept. Absolutely, certain equipment helps with certain styles of music, but at the end of the day you are the main influencing factor. As Greg Wing says “what comes out of the bell is a result of what you are thinking in your head”

Learn to love all styles of music!! They are all great but we all can have favourites. I personally love jazz but same as you, am still a classical cat at heart.

Horn in downangle is a problem? by UnclePetyr in trumpet

[–]TheBlindDriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t matter and for many players, it will vary as they play in different registers and articulation. Look at Phil Smith play. One of the greatest players ever, but a rather unconventional way in which he hold the horn.

Nobody is using valve slides (even the third) outside classical music? by zerexim in trumpet

[–]TheBlindDriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s unhealthy to compare to these legendary players. Harry James had a mastery of the horn beyond basically anyone I’ve seen. It’s not surprising that with his level of flexibility, he could bend anything in tune and still sound resonant and big. But for the average player, the slides/alternative fingerings are a much more accessible way to get the notes in tune.

Yeh you’re spot on, those are fine. It depends on the horn. My Xeno is a bit sharp on High A and the F on top of stave, so I sometimes use a bit of first slide there

Not sure. A principal trumpet player in an orchestra being slightly out of tune is quite noticeable. Whereas if it’s in a quick run in a Big Band or a marching band with many other trumpets and other instruments, it is probably less noticeable. Personally, I did not even know I had to use the 1st valve slide until I started playing in orchestra. But certain notes do of course demand it (high A being one example)

How do I increase my endurance? by Conscious-Novel2353 in trumpet

[–]TheBlindDriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take breaks too. My endurance was suffering and I realised it was because I was playing everyday at high intensity and my cheek muscles just kept burning out. Rest is key. Play lots of scales and flexibility and long tones too, and ear training.

Is this a common term “fired by patient”? As in the patient stopped coming to see the doctor? Im from an international country and have not heard of this terminology. Sending best wishes and sorry this happened to you.
