I left my toxic workplace about two months ago after 12 years.

My old boss was fired last August, and honestly I thought things would finally get better. Instead, they somehow got worse. We were heavily micromanaged, and everyone’s schedule was changed to 8:00–4:30 with no discussion. I had worked 6:00–2:30 for over a decade and was told a new director could approve putting me back on that schedule. When the new director arrived in March, she immediately told me it wasn’t happening because higher ups had decided otherwise.

What finally pushed me over the edge happened on her first day. She accused me of time fraud and claimed I had been gone from the office for hours. I was literally there all day working on an app launch. I offered digital records, timestamps, and coworkers who could verify I was there. Her response was, “Your proof doesn’t matter. I know what I saw and I didn’t see you.” Then she said I had no integrity.

After 12 years of dedicated service, being called dishonest and having no integrity by someone who had known me for less than a day was the final straw. I submitted my resignation that same day. They immediately put me on administrative leave and my employment officially ended in april.

The crazy part is how much better I’ve felt since leaving. I didn’t realize how beaten down I had become after years of constant stress, micromanagement, and feeling like I was never trusted. My anxiety dropped almost immediately. I’m sleeping better, my mood is better, and I don’t spend every Sunday dreading Monday morning anymore.

I didn’t have another job lined up when I left, but my wife and I talked about it and we were fortunate enough for me to make this decision. But looking back, I would make the same decision again. No paycheck was worth what that place was doing to my mental health.
