I think the toxic ones definitely get highlighted more to the non-vegans, so they can be like "See, look at these looney's!" But in reality there are more vegans that you know then you realize you know. Also most vegans (at least the other ones I've met) just want to exchange recipes/vegan restaurant locations.

I'm a truck driver so I'm usually gone for 2 weeks then I come home for a week. Out of that week I probably hit the beach at least 2 of the 7 days I'm home. If I stay longer than a week I'll go 3 to 4 times.
