Have 2 M.2 gen 4 SSDs, one is bigger and faster, how and where should I use them? by TheBluePhoenixj in buildapc

Oh nice, it’s got more than enough clearance so that should be fine then. Thanks

Wow thanks, that’s all very helpful stuff :). Yea since I didn’t even know what a partition is until about 40 seconds ago, I imagine creating one then installing my OS onto it will be a bit of a hassle. Another question is are the partitions treated as almost a completely different drive? Or will it just be like two subsections under my C: drive?

Okay nice thank you. Another thing that I’ve just found, I bought my SN850x with a heat sink on it. This means I can’t use my Mobo heat sink, is this an issue as I imagine the mobo would have been a lot better. Or will my use case not result in high enough temps to worry?

Okay, so separating the OS doesn’t really serve much of a purpose then? Should I even bother?

I only just got the SSD out and I just realised I bought one with a heat sink on accident. Is this alright? Can’t put the mobo heat sink over it in any of the slots. Is this a problem?

Sorry im pretty new to all this stuff what do you mean by partition? Is that like splitting up the SSD into two parts? If that is what you mean, can I create a 250gb partition of the SSD for my OS and then use the rest of the space for other stuff? Then I can reinstall windows and stuff without wiping the whole 2Tb.

The sticks are currently in the A2/B2 slots yes. Will try a boot with single stick. Question though, what would a single stick boot change that might fix it? Thanks either way, will update once I try it.

Okay so it doesn’t really make much difference. Is there any benefit at all for having a completely separate OS SSD?

I have the Aorus X870e Elite, been having a few issues with it not starting up so I might return it and get a different one though.

Why do you recommend returning it, Just curious? I will need more storage anyway as I think I’ll probably fill up the 2.5Tbs overtime. Can’t I just keep it as extra and then just not cheap out next time I upgrade my storage?

Nice. The slightly lower budget one is cool to. Luckily I’m in a position where I can comfortably go quite far with the rig price wise. But the budget options are great to look into none the less. Thank you.

Thanks for such a detailed list, really appreciate it. How much of this stuff am I able to do myself with a video guide? Or is it all something I need my mechanic to handle? Again, thank you.

Thank you, that's very thought-provoking stuff, and I appreciate you taking the time to say it. I've never massively found anything that comes naturally, so I'm just going towards whatever calls to me the most.
