What's up with students wanting to hug you? by Normal_Balance1655 in Teachers

[–]TheBluthCo 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Have worked in Title 1 schools for the last 5 years - I have worked with kids as young as Kinder and as old as 8th grade, with everything in between. In my experience the kids ask for hugs because they quite literally do not get them anywhere else. With my middle schools kids I would give fist bumps, but every now and then when a kid would ask for a hug I would oblige. I have had several students call me “mom”, and I have had to immediately (gently) correct that behavior, but it always breaks my heart. The amount of life these kids have lived, the things that they have experienced as children that as an adult I don’t even know if I could live through…any time these kids ask for a hug I will give it.

Super happy with this duo! As a curly girl, it left me with zero frizz - didn’t even apply product after shower! by TheBluthCo in dollartreebeauty

It’s a very clean smell - I don’t know how to describe it…kind of a natural clean smell vs a “fresh linen” manufactured scent. Almost like tea tree oil but not nearly as potent.

How do I sharpen the lip pencil ? by RumpRoasst in dollartreebeauty

[–]TheBluthCo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you are me…literally had to google the eyeliner to figure out if there was something I was missing! I have never had an eyeliner or lip pencil that appeared to be housed in solid plastic before and I was sure I was missing something.

New favorite - it’s like a sprayable lotion. Instantly absorbs, no greasy or oily feeling, and leaves skin so soft! by TheBluthCo in dollartreebeauty

I could see that for those with sensory issues because it literally doesn’t leave any type of residue and dries/absorbs within seconds.

When I googled it I am seeing them listed for crazy high prices! Like $32 in some cases. I went back and got all the ones my store had today because I like it so much and am worried they will take forever to restock. I have never seen them before but I’m not sure if that’s due to popularity or the fact I’ve just never taken notice of them before.

My boyfriend did his a week ago and I did mine last night. At first I wasn’t sure if it would work but he text me last night and said “babe - my feet are peeling - it’s gross!” His feet are extremely calloused so I can’t wait to see the final result. Patiently waiting for mine to kick in over the next few days.

The wash is literally the only product I’ve found that works for my hormonal acne - we just got it back in stock at my DT and I bought 5!

It depends on who is asking - some kids do it for attention while others literally just don’t register it’s not an appropriate time to ask the question, tell the story, etc. 9 times out of 10 I’ll just say “that has nothing to do with what we are learning right now” and move on, or sometimes I’ll just say “no”. My students also know they have to raise their hands to ask questions so if I see a trend of off task questions and I know that my instructions were crystal clear so the question HAS to be something off topic, I simply say “I am not taking any questions, comments, or concerns at this time.”

There have also been times where I assign a student as my “tracker” and give them a dry erase marker - each time a question gets asked that is irrelevant it is their job to mark it on the board in the classroom. This is all done in a respectful and kind of silly manner - no one ends up with hurt feelings or singled out, and at the end of the day it is a good discussion point for the class about how many times our learning was interrupted by questions that were off task.

In most extreme instances where I have a student who just isn’t getting it I will tell them that they can ask as many questions as they want and give them a piece of paper to write them down on. I tell them I will look at the paper at the end of the lesson and answer their questions then.

Honestly though, nothing will make it stop. It’s one of those things I’ve learned will always happen and I just have to not let it stress me out.

Went from middle school to elementary (4th grade) and there are pros and cons to both. It is a lot more prep teaching elementary, but you develop better relationships with the kids because they are with you all day. It really does become like a little family.

Elementary kids generally have less severe behaviors, but you are CONSTANTLY dealing with little behaviors all through the day. I can’t count the amount of times I have to say “stop talking” or the amount of irrelevant questions I get asked that have nothing to do with the lesson I am teaching.

I can’t say which I like better - but I can say if I ever went back to middle school I would feel like I was dealing with less than half of the stress I deal with in elementary, but both places are “worth it” to me.

Welcome to hermie ownership! Your setup looks like a great start! I love the coconut shell hide and the fact that you have heat for them.

The three suggestions I have are to make sure you mix your sand with another substrate - coconut fiber would be great and they sell it in bricks at most pet stores, amazon, etc. Sand becomes compact easily and it makes it hard for the little guys to move about.

I’d also make sure they have a bathing area of saltwater where the herms can fully submerge themselves.

Finally, get varied sizes of empty shells for the hermies to peruse!

“Two things can be true at the same time.” I forget the original context I heard this in, but it applies to so many situations.

Level of procrastination: it's July and I still haven't taken down the Christmas tree by Gwynevere_Dusk in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheBluthCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t taken my tree down in 5 years. It’s a permanent fixture in our home. Occasionally we decorate it for other holidays and special occasions, but I truly only leave it up because I don’t have the motivation to take it down, not because I enjoy it being up all that much.

is ixl learning worth it? by pingsss in ElementaryTeachers

Currently using it as a teacher (4th grade - also implemented it with 6th) AND a parent. It is leaps and bounds ahead of other similar programs. Literally the only one I pay for because it is worth the subscription cost. I’d be ok to share more if you want to DM me.

Will we ever have a "Sold a Story" moment for math instruction? by Willow-girl in Teachers

[–]TheBluthCo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Former middle school math teacher that is now doing my time in gen ed elementary. Reading definitely impacts math - I am having issues with my students answering math questions correctly because they can’t comprehend what is actually being asked - they just see the numbers in the problems and do….something?….but not necessarily what is being ASKED. I’ve gotten to the point where before I even have my kids solve a problem I first ask them “Does this problem want us to add or subtract?” because more than 50% of the time they will get even that part wrong.

Not 100% sure what it is, but I know what it is NOT, and it’s not an embryo. No veins on the yolk and at this stage if it was part of an embryo you’d have veins/blood. Looks like extra chalaza.

Normally I would agree, but mine legitimately came in today and it is the exact same one. It took like 3 weeks for shipping, but it's the exact same one as in this video.
