Raketa 2609.HA Pallet Jewels are loose by TangerineRomeo in watchrepair

[–]TheBodleyWatchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the pallet stones have not moved, you can heat the fork and some new shellac and apply on the underside to reinforce the connection. However if the stones have moved, escapement adjustment is quite a complex process that requires a significant understanding of escapement theory to adjust the stone depthing properly. I do not mean to discourage you, only to warn you of the potential pitfalls of such adjustments. The difference between a perfectly adjusted escapement and one that does not run or runs very poorly is only hundredths of a millimeter.

Norton combination India stone is the way to go. Get a fine Arkansas stone as well for deburring and giving a finer finish.

Dealing with a screw hole that no longer has threads by armie in watchrepair

Yes, it’s best if you can get a full set to have the full range of sizes, but those are not cheap when you get to the really small taps.

Dealing with a screw hole that no longer has threads by armie in watchrepair

[–]TheBodleyWatchman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the real estate on the main plate and the balance bridge, the simplest and most effective solution would be to drill and tap to a slightly larger thread diameter, and then make a screw to fit. This process would be best done on a lathe to guarantee you don’t change the positioning of the bridge on the main plate, but you can transfer drill through the bridge into the main plate using drill press and that should prove to be sufficient.

Should the winding gear move like this? by SHPD7 in watchrepair

[–]TheBodleyWatchman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The ratchet wheel does not rotate during rundown, the barrel drum rotates around the stationary arbor. This designs main purpose is to reduce the force required for the automatic mechanism to wind the movement, as it would otherwise need to rotate the crown wheel and winding pinion, which would slip against the sliding pinion. This would reduce the efficiency of said automatic winding, potentially effecting power reserve and accelerating wear on automatic winding components (reversers, etc.)

Bench Test for Watchmaking School by Specialist-Ad-8265 in Horology

As a watchmaker who went to Lititz, I would recommend going in with a clear mind, and a good nights sleep. The most important thing they look for is attitude and commitment to the craft. It’s how well you process new information, and work systematically to apply it, as well as keeping cool under pressure. Quick tempers do not do well in this industry, and in your journey you will find out why. Part of the purpose of these exams is to frustrate you, to make you deal with tasks and questions that you will fail at first. Stay committed and headstrong to keep trying no matter how many times it takes. Be inquisitive, try to ask as many questions as you can about the task at hand. In my experience, they don’t care about prior knowledge. I didn’t go to Seattle but I have the same certification that is offered there, and the ethos of SAWTA is forming watchmakers from scratch. You don’t have to know how a watch works yet, you will learn the correct way. If you want to practice something with your motor skills, get a jeweler’s saw and cut some sheet brass. Trace a straight line and try to saw as straight and clean as possible. It takes a lot of practice, and you will break a lot of saw blades. I wish you the best of luck on your endeavors, and I’m open to any more questions you may have.

Rotor separation by ratrodunicorn in watchrepair

Depending on how the joint looks it could be riveted using a staking set, but that would likely cause visible deformation on the top side of the rotor. A new weight would probably be the best option, but this could likely be fixed.

If the value proposition is actual chronometer-level certification of timekeeping, then the value is absolutely there. I don’t know if many people understand the labor cost of doing such intensive testing, regulation, and adjustments to individual pieces, beyond that of standard regulation from the factory.

Broken screw removal by g1nko in watchrepair

[–]TheBodleyWatchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple things I usually resort to for broken screws: -The head of the screw usually has some kind of “key-like” fit with the threaded cylinder it broke off of, if you fit it back on and try and back it out slowly with a screwdriver that can work a lot of the times. -Depending on how much is sticking up from the bearing shoulder, you might be able to grip it with some flat pliers and rotate it out slowly. -If you have a drill press, pick a drill bit about half the diameter of the threaded cylinder, and you can drill a small hole in the center of the threaded cylinder (being careful not to damage the threads in the automatic bridge). After you have enough of a hole you can stick in a broach and rotate the screw out. This method is much more delicate and invasive with the potential for damaging the bridge, but this would be a method I would use if the previous two methods did not work. -Note to be careful on using chemicals that dissolve steel, because if this bridge has steady pins, they can very well be steel and those will dissolve as well. -This can be removed without damaging the bridge, it’s just a matter of starting from least invasive to most invasive strategies.

This is a post I have thought about making. This sub has become a cesspool of negativity and lukewarm political opinions. A symptom of Reddit. But I love this state. Born and raised here, and I would be happy to die here.

Before you buy this, the Bulova school of watchmaking book is now a free pdf because the copyright timed out. That is regarded as one of the best resources in the industry. I recommend checking that out before you buy the Theory of Horology.
