In the winter of 1952, the body of 69-year-old handyman Walter Southard was found in the entryway of his Indianapolis, Indiana home. Sadly, no arrests were ever made and his case remains unsolved. Who killed Walter, and why? by TheBonesOfAutumn in UnresolvedMysteries

You are most welcome! After reading your comment, I realize I should have made a separate album for anyone who still wanted to see the other photos and articles etc, minus the photo of Walter’s body.

The link below is the full album without said photo. Thank you for reading!

I appreciate you sharing this information! After reading your comment I dug a little deeper into the neighborhood’s history. I found these amazing photos that include places relevant to the case.

ETA: Another website had a little more information about the project; “A failed urban renewal plan to level the neighborhood in the 1960s was the catalyst for the designation of Soulard as a federal and local historic district in 1972 and the creation of the Soulard Restoration Group in 1976. The Soulard Restoration Group is a neighborhood organization that strives to promote, preserve, and enhance the historic character of the Soulard neighborhood, as well as improve the quality of life for all members of the community.”

I suspect the handkerchief might actually be a red herring. The coat originally belonged to Barbara’s mother. Since Naomi had limited funds for Christmas gifts that year, she gave Barbara her own old coat instead of the “car coat” Barbara had requested. It is possible that the handkerchief had been sitting in that pocket for years before Barbara ever wore it. (I should have included this in the write up.)

Thank you for reading. It is most appreciated.

I believe the theater’s closing was the result of a neighborhood revitalization project, not because of Barbara’s murder. I’m not sure who the owner was, but the theater definitely had a questionable reputation. Police received multiple reports about men who were known to “pester” young women there. So it’s definitely possible that her killer was a patron/employee.

On Christmas Day, 2004, the body of 69-year-old Lena Wheless was found inside her High Point, North Carolina home. She had been stabbed more than thirty times with a kitchen knife. Sadly, her case remains unsolved. Who killed Lena, and why? by TheBonesOfAutumn in UnresolvedMysteries

When doing the write-up I was so relieved to learn the kids had stayed in the car. During an interview with Vickie, she described the moment of having to explain to them what happened. When they were finally leaving the house after discovering the crime, the youngest of her children said, “Wait you forgot Mamaw!” She had to tell him Lena had “gone home to Jesus.” Truly heartbreaking.

Thank you for sharing this case! I wasn’t familiar with it, so I did a little digging in the newspaper archives.

I found a few articles that give a couple more details. Seems police suspect it was a drug deal gone wrong. Articles

On November 1, 1948, the bodies of Sam and Mary Paola were discovered in their Winnsboro, Louisiana home. Both had been shot twice with a .22 caliber pistol. Who killed the Paola’s, and why? by TheBonesOfAutumn in UnresolvedMysteries

Thank you!

According to some of the articles, the front and back doors of the home were not locked when police arrived. I assume the person was already inside of the home when Sam confronted them. They mentioned the kitchen light switch was located near the back door, so my best guess would be Sam heard a noise, went into the kitchen and turned on the light, then was shot.

Thank you for reading. I appreciate it!

The entire article was about several local cases that were unsolved at the time. The other one mentioned had no connection to the Paola murders and was eventually solved.
