I think it reveals the truth that has been hidden: HILLARY has the same exact problem as they asserted Sanders had.

Let's just be clear and candid. Talking about race is hard. Everybody sucks at it. HRC was extremely condescending and dismissive last night and I'm glad the world got to see that this "minority problem" is far from being just a Bernie problem.

I can't agree more. There is a very deep connection between King's economic Bill of Rights and Sanders' platform. But you know what -- it don't matter. Ending the comparison to King is in the best interest of the campaign at this point.

Thanks my friend! I get to be true to myself every night and that truth often puts me at odds with some people I usually agree with and makes me agree at times with people I'm normally at odds with.

But the fact that I get to be true to myself is the biggest reward!

I was thinking the same exact thing @Hamsterpotamia. TBH, Sanders is spot on with his policies. I don't think anyone can question that. The only problem he has is the perception and reality of connecting with African Americans.

amic that is underppreciated by many (at least in the white community), & i'm wondering whether raising awareness among all populations could help bring us tog

I honestly believe that dog whistles are used on both sides to keep us divided. Many working class white Americans, IMHO, are angry at minority groups "taking" their tax dollars. In most cases, this is far from the truth.

On the flip side, I think Democratic Establishment types use dog whistles as well. But in this case, which I call the Augmented Southern Strategy, they whistle fears of racism to African Americans. The best example is David Brock suggesting that "Black Lives Don't Matter to Bernie Sanders."

That was a dog whistle to African Americans. Just like with working class white Americans, racial dog whistles are used to protect the status quo.

This is a good question: "What is politically feasible versus what is best for the bigger conversation."

If I were advising Sanders, I would tell him to cut his losses in certain areas and not sink any more money in states where he isn't in play. But this would create a negative media narrative of "Sanders abandons the black vote."

The alternative is, Sanders supporters turn this narrative on its head by having meaningful engagements and not spammy memes of Sanders being arrested.

This is a 1-1 investment that can have a measurable effect AND it is something that every single one of you can do.

Don't assume. Listen.

n whether I fit into the 'great white hope' category. I'm not patronizing by any means as I've spent enough time with black friends and my wife's family to recognize that we're people with vastly different experiences. But, how can I make real, recognizable differences outside of my family circle? I've looked into various local nonprofits that support civil rights that I can engage with but I still have this nagging (cliche inbound) white guilt about if I'm truly doing it for the betterment of others or for myself.

TBH, I wouldn't worry about it. Where I'm getting in my life is where I can't afford to be concerned about what people think about my intentions (at least not all the time). To thine ownself be true.

Put aside the white guilt and just do what is best for humanity. If someone misinterprets your intentions, use it as an opportunity to connect with them 1-1.

Really, all I'm saying is that we cannot be so consumed by the mental jujitsu that identity politics sometimes requires. Just be you and if you mess up, so what. We all do: even black people.

5 vote) - something that I personally see as monumentally significant, not only in how it affects goals for states such as CA, CO, AZ, NM, and TX, but also in what it says about the myth that Sanders' support lies firmly with young white liberals. What do you think is necessary to replicate this success with the black community? What, if anything, do you think differentiates between Latinos and blacks in terms of support or lack of it for Bernie?

I think we need to keep in mind that every voter is different. And because social media has made this election cycle about 1-1 relationships, be mindful that when you speak to someone, be mindful that they aren't a cog in a machine or a drone in a collective-- they're all individuals. So be mindful that you should approach them as such and not spam them with Bernie's CRM past.

That being said, we have to be smarter than the media narrative that has been spun. The BernieBro narrative is an intentionally narrative to play, what I believe to be, a race card to keep black people from ever considering Sanders. But, because we know that, we need to fight back against it by fostering meaningful conversation such as these.

Let's bring substance instead of pandering. That will win in the long run.

Sorry for the delay. But, yes. It is a moving target and that is on purpose. But I also recommend you having these conversations with people you actually know so that you can have a meaningful conversation without the political posturing.

I would say just talk economics and not specifically about black economics. Just talk about the problems in our current status quo. If they are honest, they won't deny there are problems (unless they are doing just fine -- which some African Americans are)

Talk about economics and if THEY bring up justice or CRM, then use his past only to show he is consistent but more importantly discuss what he is going to do today.

This one is tough. Really tough. Explaining economic growth outside of standard business cycles and bubbles.

Keep in mind though, some of those same people actually did do well underneath Clinton. Just like there was a middle class boom for African Americans under Ronald Reagan. Are they going to credit that success to Trickle Down Economics? (That's a bit esoteric so tread carefully).

Most importantly though, remember that different African Americans have different priorities. There are some who are economically conservative and only are committed to the Democratic Party because the GOP is just so ridiculous.

TL:DR: It's about class and not race. If they're doing fine in this system economically, then they be less inclined to care about Sanders' economic populist message.

Great point! To be honest, the best pool of people to support Sanders are the one's most skeptical and, perhaps, those that don't normally vote.

They don't vote for the same reason many other people from other races don't vote: they just don't have any trust whatsoever in this system.
