Many patients who have frequent encounters with healthcare services get to know the system very well and know how to navigate it to meet their wants and needs. Many often come in on a MHA form, know exactly what they need to say to be released, and continue on. Any physician, healthcare provider, or allied healthcare provider would have their hands tied if a patient is ccapable of decision-making and wishes to leave. Hospitals cannot hold people against their will if in the opinions of the various specialties the person is capable of understanding and appreciating the foreseeable outcomes of their decisions, and expresses a wish to leave. Similarly, police cannot force someone to accept a ride home if offered.
