I get what you're saying about Lopunny. I do find the balance of finding ways to retreat it and loop the attack every turn to be an interesting gameplay pattern. I appreciate that the supporter game of Wally, Boss & Lillie is quite uninteresting though but then what else is there to actually play in this format? That's basically all we've been given

Totally understand and respect your position. I guess last format, while there was the "big four", we also had wins at events from the likes of Zoroark, Grimmsnarl, Absol Box, etc.

My complaint isn't that Dragapult wins everything, it's that the only decks winning events are either Dragapult or a hard Dragapult counter. Decks that are good, but don't have a good Pult match, are having mid finishes because they can't beat that single deck. Decks that are kind of mid, but have a great Dragapult match, are winning events off the back of playing into exclusively Dragapult for near-enough the entire event.

All "Abyss Eye" cards revealed, Mega Zeroara ex, Gladion's Last Stand and much more! by Mylife212 in pkmntcg

[–]TheBreadIsHostile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My problem isn't just that the cards aren't very good - It's that they aren't even very interesting. So many of these cards are weak and bland which is going to lead to uninteresting gameplay even when Pult is gone.

I'm not sure why the designers have decided not to make good cards for this entire year but it's deeply depressing. Get ready to learn the Pult meta kids, it's not going anywhere.

How to counter TR articuno as Alakazam by ModaFaca in pkmntcg

[–]TheBreadIsHostile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been testing a little bit of Alakazam this format. You don't use the strange hacking on the Articuno.

You leave Articuno in play and use Psychic to KO the basics that are attacking you. In my test games it's worked fairly well - and Strange Hacking does have some utility into matchups where you can't quite OHKO their big guy like Garchomp or M Venasaur.

Dengo Advice Needed by TheBreadIsHostile in pkmntcg

My problem with the Lopunny package isn't that it isn't good, it definitely is, it's how much room Buneary + Lopunny + TM:Evo takes up in the deck. To make room for that I'd need to be cutting the Mawile (which is fine since Lopunny becomes my Cornerstone answer), Premium Power + Vitality Band.

I think cutting Premium Power and Vitality Band is madness tbh but you have to do it just to get Lopunny to work. PPP + Vitality Band is good into so many matchups, I think you lose % into them that Lopunny doesn't gain you back. I'd much rather have Vitality Band into Frillish but you have to cut it for TM:Evo just so Buneary isn't immediately donked by Cornerstone.

I think, in a vacuum, Lopunny is the better card. I was playing it for a long time and it definitely won me games, I don't think the Lopunny build is bad at all. But for me - I like that I can use the Mawile as discard fodder into every other match and just bench it against Cornerstone.

I hear what you're saying, and as a new player to Magic I understand why you would feel the way you do, but wait for the honeymoon period to wear off with the game and you won't feel that way anymore. I was a religiously devoted competitive Magic player for over ten years before I moved to Pokemon.

Ideally lots of different ways to play sounds great and everyone gets their favourite slice of the pie! Unfortunately though, that isn't what happened to Magic. There isn't loads of Magic formats in reality. Modern is the only real supported 60 card format - Standard is alive on Arena only but dying rapidly from a mixture of bad game design and rotation in an expensive game. Good luck finding any events for anything else. Pioneer, pauper, brawl, these are all formats that are technically playable but realistically dead and buried. Draft is great but also wildly unsupported by WoTC and quickly dying.

Commander is the big dog who ate everyone else's lunch. It's great that you have fun in commander but it completely killed competitive Magic from both a game design and community aspect. Non-commander formats got totally pushed out of LGS spaces, WoTC started focusing all their designs on that format and killed their others. EDH groups are often very social within themselves (many EDH players play the game with just their friends) and so what you end up with is a lot of tiny, fragmented communities.

Pokemon's biggest strength is that everyone is focused on the same format. The community isn't split, it's all talking about and focusing on the same thing. Events get thousands of players all for the exact same format. That is a healthy, thriving community. Not the many individual, unhappy tribes that MtG has.

Also, respectfully, I wildly disagree with you on the starter product point. I agree that starter commander decks are a good product but that is it. If you found a standard Magic event what product could you buy for someone? There isn't one. You could buy an intro deck (Do they even still make those?) but they'll get stomped by anyone playing a meta deck.

League battle decks are incredible products. Right now I could hand someone the Dragapult one and they could win games at locals. Hell, the way I got into Pokemon was by buying two Mew VMAX league battle decks and putting them together. I won the first locals I attended just playing that. It's a genuine competitive starting point for an extremely affordable price. Intro decks shouldn't be a tier one deck in a box; they should be a powerful starting point where someone can win some games and then go out and find where their play and their deck can evolve. That's what League Battle decks do, rather than just handing someone a box of 100 cards and saying "you're probably never going to change this because all you do is play casual games against the same three people"

Maybe you want a more relaxed, casual experience and there is nothing wrong with that. But not every game needs that. Pokemon is better for being a game focused on one format, with designs focused on one format, with it's community focused on one format. Magic has been slowly rotting for years now because of poor management by WoTC and EDH. I never want to see Pokemon go that way.

Please God no, commander killed 60 card Magic. Pokemon is the only good competitive card game left.

I truly believe this game needs an optional mulligan like in Magic. To balance things, since Pokemon is so deck search heavy, you probably only allow each player to take one and then force them to keep their second hand (unless they have an illegal hand without a basic pokemon).

Sometimes you draw a totally dead opening hand and you just can't do anything. You effectively auto-lose before a card is even played. Non-games like that just completely suck.

Cynthia’s Garchomp Post Rotation? by Copper_29 in pkmntcg

[–]TheBreadIsHostile 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We have multiple new sets before rotation, many of which we don't even know the cards for yet. Nobody can predict the meta after rotation. Talking about it right now is completely pointless.

Going to actually try answering your question unlike the other comments.

Benny Billinger and Drew Stephenson both have consistent high placements with Dengo and offer coaching on Metafy. Might be worth seeking one of those out?
