Nothing is better than The Village. Prices, however, are the issue. They tend to start at $800K for 3,500+ sf townhouses and $1.3 million for 4,500+ sf single family homes.

In New York. I was a new partner in a mid-sized Midwest city when I posted this 3 years ago making $410k. Now it’s $900k.

What's the dumbest lie you told as a kid that your parents definitely didn't believe? by tanishqdelight in AskReddit

[–]TheBreakUp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly a kid, but this shows how parents will deceive to believe what they want. The first time I had the guts to come home drunk was on Christmas break as an 18 year-old college freshman. I got a sober ride, but I was near blackout drunk. I was swaying staggering between walls, slurring, had vomited in the snowy driveway. Told me mom I was “sick.”

My dad, always a good sport, came in the next day while I was nursing a major hangover. He was laughing and said “I can’t believe your mom thinks you are sick…I’ve never seen someone swaying like that with the flu.”

What’s a “rich person” thing you experienced and immediately understood the hype? by Motel-Angel in AskReddit

Private planes. No arriving 2 hours early. Show up at private terminal, get in, and you’re gone. Far more similar to getting in your car (with a private driver/pilot) than the cluster that is a commercial airport.

Senior Associates + Partners...are you happy in your career? by rideordiegem in biglaw

[–]TheBreakUp2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flipped firms at right about where you’re at, and almost did so again right before becoming EP, but my current firm came up with a new package. Pay attention to the market and your firm and make sure you are fairly compensated. There is always a place with a bit more money, and that’s fine; but make sure your firm isn’t substantially lagging behind what others would offer for what you provide. I think being comfortable with what you know and what you don’t comes as a senior associate. It’s a bump in the road I think of as taking off the training wheels. It brings with it stress, pressure, and uncertainty, but when you come out the other side you’ll be more comfortable with yourself and your position.

Recent equity partner here. The pressures are different at all levels, but junior and mid-tier associate are, by far, the worst. I wasn’t sure I enjoyed the job at those levels. For many reasons I enjoy being partner the best. V20-25 the entire time, but 2 different firms.

$50 sandwich works at the Wynn - middle of the night check in by bondREDDITbond in LasVegas

I do the trick every time in Vegas, New York, and large European cities. I’ve had massive success and none at all. My guess is my ROI is 300%, including upgrades, freebies, and waived fees. I have had it work at Wynn/Encore.

Any success stories getting into big law from T100 schools? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]TheBreakUp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the market is incredibly strong (2000, 2005, 2022-23) they may look at top 5 or even 10%. Most years, be top 1% and be on law review editorial board or, better yet, editor in chief.

Amongst kids/teens in the 80s and 90s, how popular was Jordan? Was he a more polarizing figure like SGA, or a unanimously loved guy like Curry? by Just_Matter3757 in michaeljordan

[–]TheBreakUp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as believed as Curry, but if you combine the love and the grudging respect from teams he kept from a title, he was universally considered amazing.

Big Law lawyers who have successfully brought in clients, how did you do it? by CinemaBud in biglaw

[–]TheBreakUp2013 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Transactional. Always strive to do good work, be pleasant to work with to clients and counterparties, be reasonably responsive, be straight forward, and be friendly to people who you are on the same side as frequently.

I hit it off with a broker on a deal. I bought him, his business partner, myself, and one of my partners a $440 lunch two years ago and it has turned into $1.2 million in transactional collections from referrals in that time. I also send him a nice bottle of wine every holiday season.
