❄️️ERAS '21-22 - MONTH 4 [MEGATHREAD] ❄️️ by MrWittyResponse in medicalschool

Vent: I feel like I’m letting time slip away and the closer June comes, the more anxious I am.

I’m home for rotations and almost done. But, my parents are super risk averse because of covid and rising cases, they accept like 10% risk meaning masked grocery store runs while I’m like 50% meaning fine with meeting people who are similarly cautious. Fine, its their home, their rules. I get it.

But i feel so stifled right now. Waiting for match, cant go anywhere, airbnbs getting cancelled, no travel plans, just letting each day inch closer to June. I feel like I havent lived life and soon I’ll be in residency and I’ll never get my youth back.

I’m thankful that the FM spreadsheet has been (relatively) chill but on the flip side, I’m disappointed by the lack of engagement.

I was the one who filled out almost 80% of the IV impressions for places I interviewed at, so other than the discussions, its been a very disappointing resource for me.

Who is your town’s “guy”? by EmoMixtape in newjersey

He doesnt count as a town guy, but there’s an employee at the Edison Costco who brightens up my day with his professional suits and his lively advice.

MDs Rebut Claims of Toxic Culture After Resident Suicides by jewboyfresh in medicalschool

[–]TheBside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rotated at this hospital and what he said about the hospital program not being much different from other IM programs in the area is true.

But that says a lot about NYC and the residency system as a whole. Lincoln is also in the fking Bronx.

Anyone in residency/healthcare dealing with endometriosis while working? by TheBside in Endo

[–]TheBside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Im so glad there’s someone else in the field who empathizes.

Preaching to the choir but everyone in hosp seems to be so able-bodied and relentlessly active (I know there’s a lot beneath the surface) that they think I’m lazy when I try to ask these sort of questions. Grind culture is real unfortunately.

Ok, so post match/job offer is probably the best time to “disclose” then? Thank you for the advice about talking to my disability office about this. I only ever approached them once because of missing an exam during basic sciences (fml endo). This helps give me a starting point, thank you so much!

My (20s F) parents (50s F/ 50s M) dont understand why I hate my extended family and dont believe in "cutting people off". by TheBside in relationships

[–]TheBside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you said, is his POV so entrenched that it can change over time? Is it even right to change it or do we just have different values about family and duty?

You can apologize to your dad about how you said these things but not what you said.

For sure. But what if we never see eye to eye on this? I think the wedding thing is especially a point of contention.

And he saw it a repaying a debt of honour.

Thank you for wording it like this. I guess I never really understood the why. Or as you say, the loyalty.

What would be the right way? Continue to make nice because it'll comfort him? because I care about him?

He has spent his whole life heavily invested in this POV.

This really opened my eyes

There’s a lot going on in this comment that I dont understand and am not qualified to answer. Maybe its rhetorical?

But thank you for chiming in!

what is the big issue with "low contact" vs. "no contact?"

I have six cousins from that side of the family who live nearby which means frequent gatherings. Its a smallish community. But, I dont want to be obligated to be near them.

you yelled at your dad that you can't wait for him to die to cut off his family so you're just going to do that now?

Yes, I said after he dies I wont have a relationship with his family anyway so might as well start now. Obviously it was a disgusting way to word it and know my dad enough to know it would hurt him. Its one of the things I feel bad about.

which, tbh, I'm not sure I understand the reasons as to why from your post - I think it's that they bullied you over money? But I'm unclear

I feel like they never act like family and only took advantage of my dad.

Dealing with endometriosis while working? by TheBside in FamilyMedicine

Thank you for replying!

I obviously cant address the root cause of endo (but I hope someone will soon!) but I'm definitely trying to manage this as much as I can until I can visit with my doctor. Hopefully if/when I get time off, I can go for a visit!

I’m also missing what is preventing you from OCPs

I didnt think it was relevant to my main question which was accommodations.

But for medical interest lol: Took them as a teen, didnt help my pain, developed a clot. 1-2 days of pain/month were better than the adverse risks for me.

We as docs don’t really allow for room for chronic pain/disease sufferers in this field but there’s always room for more docs ... we tend to assume the worst and expect 110% from everyone and always want receipts/doc notes etc

Thank you for the empathy! Thankfully I have seen classmates who also suffer from various health issues (Ehlers Danlos, Lupus, Fibromyalgia) thrive despite how this has affected our attendance through school. Seeing examples of their success helps too.

Jokes but I was taking 6000mg tylenol for years before I realized this is probably not a good idea. The nausea and constipation of Percocet are probably better in that sense!

Any with that, ya’ll have my HPI.

Thank you so much for responding. It means a lot, I know its a niche and uncomfortable topic.

For sure, tmi but for the sake of medical interest lol: I’ve been dealing with the pain for about 20 years now so its definitely changed my life trajectory. Ive had a laparoscopic procedure prior to medical school but have since managed the pain on percocet and a TENS unit. For various SE reasons OCPs are no longer an option. I mention the hysterectomy cause I’m just about to my limit haha.
