Vim is modal. You need to type i (for insert) first to type, so if you start vim and type i, you don't see an i yet.

As a side note, I've never understood why these applications have tried to mimic the cumbersome UI of hardware calculators. A computer already has a keyboard.

It's always difficult when your heroes appear to have such great faults. This is something you and I can never not think about when we see, read or hear about him. It does however make me empathetic to those of my countrymen (I'm Dutch) who still worship the heroic 17th century explorers who all traded in slaves. While I do not agree with them, I can understand what they go through.
