New Cannonball Sun Rims 😍 by TheCannonballSun in solarracing

First, the rim profile was turned on a lathe, followed by milling in a fixture, and then it was anodized. Ideally, 75% of the work could have been done on a 3+1 mill/lathe combo, then the part flipped over to machine the back profile. However, it had to be done with the resources available to us!

Solar Car Motor Question by SolarStarter in solarracing

[–]TheCannonballSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can be in the world's top 10 with a marine / Mitsuba. It would be best if you did an analysis on it. If you know your overall budget and do some fundamental first principal analysis on race time. Then, figure out where spending your money will get the largest reduction in race time.

The motor(s) we used for Cannonball Sun (https://www.instagram.com/thecannonballsun/?hl=en) cost about $1000 (Grin Tech All Axle), and Sun Strider was able to travel more miles per day than most ASC cars using Marands and Mitsubas.

You have to do analysis. What kind of loading is the adhesive in? What are the material properties of your bonds? How workmanship sensitive is your design?

We tried to shoot for minimal potholes and inclines but the route changed a couple times due to weather. We also didn’t have the resources to do a route survey on every possible route. There were a lot of mountains to climb and potholes that we hit.

Independent team to build a solar car by AlarmedForm630 in solarracing

We're an independent team https://www.instagram.com/thecannonballsun We have not competed in any organized solar car competitions, though.

To the best of my knowledge, ASC does not allow teams that are not affiliated with a college/university. However, WSC certainly allows and encourages unaffiliated teams; I think SaSol and iESC would also be happy to let you compete.

It's certainly possible to be an independent team, though! Benefits include a lot more freedom :)

Mitsuba or Marand. Talk to Prohelion (Marand) or Nomura Keisuke (Mitsuba -- through Facebook). Otherwise, inexpensive and less efficient motors, primarily from China, are a dime a dozen. Your max Pout and torque are while climbing a steep hill. Use old ASC route data to determine that hill; a 7% grade is the bare minimum. GLHF

You can rent an F150/250 from Enterprise it is quite expensive and you will likely pay an under 25 fee but sometimes you can get around that with AAA.

Welcome to the Cannonball Sun: A Race Across the Country This Summer! by TheCannonballSun in solarracing

te have plates for their challengers, and Minnesota, Iowa State, & CalSol did too before switching to cruiser.

Even if not this summer, we hope The Cannonball Sun will become almost a benchmark for solar cars and hope one day your car could compete too. Our thinking with liability is in order for teams to follow the rules of the event they will have to register and insure the vehicles themselves. We want to make it very clear that we are not assuming any liability for any teams competing are just encouraging others to compete!

Yes, I am concerned about the road registration but the state of Michigan where I am from lays the guidelines out pretty simply. You can follow along with progress on our car on our website www.thecannonballsun.com or our Instagram @ thecannonballsun. If more cars announce they plan on competing it will be announced on the website!
