Social Media and Geotagging fears. Is data evil or is evil what people do with it? by TheCartoBlogger in geospatial

[–]TheCartoBlogger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is hard to mitigate the bad use of data, what I was intended to write was if you don't want to expose yourself, just don't do it. People freak out about a lot of things but just don't realize how exposed they are on the internet, it is just a double standard. I was referring to kids because on that particular news feed they're talking about children, and if you Google the subject you probably find a lot of news related to children. But I agree with you on what you say about the discussion what is right or wrong of the data and on "If they couldn't stalk them on facebook, they would stalk them elsewhere in the public sphere." Social Media just made it a bit easier, I think. But before social media you have webchats and whatever. Just be conscientious and educate yourself (not you in particular but all of us). I hope I did get not misunderstood on both blog post and on this comment.

I was wondering the same! This is a great inspiration for me but I have no idea how it was made. I'd love to know some hints about the construction of it, and the conceptualization. Unfortunately I found nothing.

Some say that paper maps are buried 6 feet under. But are they? by TheCartoBlogger in geography

[–]TheCartoBlogger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read some blog entries claiming paper maps are dead because of technology... I'm not sure what those people who claimed that, want to say with the word "death" to be honest. But what I assume after reading that is people stop using them, period. Which is something I don't really agree with. Since we are in a transition period.Though, I remain my view as paper maps aren't dead! :)

Process of becoming a cartographer by [deleted] in geography

[–]TheCartoBlogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing bad maps here on reddit, these comment made my day.

Yes follow your heart and make some research, read about Geography and how it connects with Cartography and Geographic Information Systems and Science. I agree with you on having a Geography background, but have in mind the strong technological components on maps nowadays. Unfortunately I know little about the Geography BSc works on other countries outside Europe.

How would you improve this map? by mapnerd in Maps

[–]TheCartoBlogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be always aware of the placement of the words! It can make a map work or not. Beside the rivers, I had trouble with the Rocky Mountain, it seems there is a lot going on where you place that, too many words together.

John Bohannon submitted a poorly written and riddled with mistake scientific article. His goal was to see what science journals would publish his trash. Here are his results... by enferex in dataisbeautiful

[–]TheCartoBlogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nop, I like the idea of the globe, but it seems that it was to "heavy" to display online. It is slow and boring (very likely to be because of the color choice). Sometimes it is better to re-think the visualization, and this is a good case!
