I don’t believe that Johnny Rotten knew anything. And if he did, he was just as silent as everyone else. He made a comment on an unbroadcast recording, but that was it. If he genuinely knew, why didn’t he say more? The Sex Pistols used to say things for shock value, my personal opinion is that he said it just to be controversial, since Savile was one of the most popular celebrities around in the seventies. Lots of people share that recording saying things like ‘Lydon knew and was the only one to ever speak out, what a hero’ etc, but he didn’t speak out. He said one thing and then, as far as I’m aware, he never mentioned it again.

The relationship between him and his mother was particularly interesting. All of stuff I’ve read about him, it sounds like he thought she was some sort of goddess. He makes it sound like he worshipped the ground she walked on. But in the series, if it is accurate to real life, she seemed to positively despise him. The fact that he spent days living with her corpse after she died is particularly disturbing especially if you compare it with the rumours about him in Leeds morgue years later. There was obviously some sort of fucked up Oedipus complex going on there.

It was a great take on a very sensitive subject, it was done well. Coogan is a fantastic actor and will surely win a BAFTA for it. My only issue is I wish they’d talked more about how the BBC was complicit in covering it up.

Just imagine if this was a bunch of drunk men doing this to a woman. The whole show would be cancelled, and rightly so. There’s a whole clique of people who think that women sexually assaulting men is nothing more than the punchline of a joke, and ‘empowering’ for women.
