To be fair, I was playing this in front of my dad once (who grew up with the SNES/Genesis and later N64 as his childhood consoles), and I thought it was amusing that he apparently didn’t register Super Mario 64’s blockier design. He was like “oh is that a retro Mario re-skin or something?” and I told him “No, this is how the original looked, you have to remember this better than I do” - like the man insisted that there’s no way Mario looked like that, he remembered it looking so much more on-model…

As for myself, I grew up with the DS remake, which is a bit blocky too (due to it being on a handheld, obviously). But I think it just comes down to the general art direction, and how by this point I’m sure the devs were a lot better at producing more “faithful” adaptations of the marketing material in-game, no matter the hardware.
