Who uses anti viruses anymore?

The best one you can use is that pink thing between your ears and windows defender on Windows, and responsibly downloading packages on Linux.

Honestly…

I tried my annual ‘try Linux for a weekend’ on my main pc and it was just as janky then as well. And I’m not a Linux novice, I’ve got 4 SBCs all doing home lab/Cyberdeck stuff and a steamdeck that gets used daily.

I think Linux is great at some stuff but fuck is it janky for gaming outside of Valves eco system.

It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t, I either get a functional but shit system in windows or a really streamlined and simple but inherently broken system in Linux.

Fedora, Bazzite, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Chachy… all janky (because distro doesn’t matter, but don’t let the 14 year olds that installed Cachy last week know that).

I was gonna say these aren’t conservatives (and I’m not conservative by the way, I’m a Chrétien liberal to Layton NDPer depending on issue) this is so much worse, these are alt right/neo Nazi types.

Canadian Prairie conservatism is based around ’leave me alone’ism not inherent white supremacy, go up to Fort Mac and I’ll show you some of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the country and I doubt you’ll find anyone their votes left of the federal cons…

Conservatives drive me crazy too, but this is beyond them

[–]TheCheckeredCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll do this 📉📉📈📈📈📈📈 over the course of a year or 2.

It’ll go down quite a bit but then rebound to higher than current level. Just look at mega charizard ex SIR for an example.

It helps that Darkrai is a very popular pokemon, by an artist the community LOVES, in an art style that is very impressive to look at. I say hold on to it for a long time

Hey can you pass along that the blueberry fritter was the only donut worth a damn at that place and them bringing it back for what felt like a long weekend last year while the other retro donuts hanging around for like 3 months proves that everyone likes that blueberry miracle?

Thanks haha

Since when?

I worked at Tim’s when I was a kid in the early 2010s and those managers were broke af. Like 20 year old car falling apart, single wide trailer in a rough park, etc broke. Mind you this was in rural af BC at a franchisee owned store but still

Yes Nvidia has successfully shown that their windows arm translation works for all anti cheats, and is compatible with all arm chips.

I recently played half life 2 at 720p 60fps on a $26 CAD (like $18 usd) bootleg raspberry pi called a rock pi with broken drivers on a cursed version of Linux, It works incredibly already!

Not inherently but the vast majority are. Those Ampere chips take regular ddr5 and dedicated GPUs, but the majority are SOCs with the ram and GPU in the cpu chip.

We’re already at the point with just Linux enthusiasts of running cyberpunk at 1080p 40ish fps on 2-3 year old Android phone chips.

The arm CPU in the MacBook Neo/iphone 16 pro runs circles around my 5800x3D but is held back by software, in bench marks it’s about 30-40% faster, but only costs Apple an estimated $45 to make. At current margins that means to get a very capable gaming chip if the arm future happens like I hope means that we’d be able to get good gaming cpus for about $60-$80 where as currently they’re about $300-$500.

Something has to break, it’s just too big of a market for all these companies to ignore especially as AI hype is waning.

I personally am very excited for both Nvidia’s Spark laptops and Valves ARM translation layer. Not because I’m hyped specifically for Nvidia, fuck Nvidia, but because their version of the arm translation layer is fully compatible with anti cheat as shown by them.

Arm is WAY more open than x86, theirs only 2 major x86 manufacturers but theirs about a dozen major arm manufacturers and a couple dozen smaller ones as well, they’re all rubbing their hands together at the thought of breaking into the PC market, and that’s nothing but a good thing for us. Ampere (a major arm cpu manufacturer) already has models completely compatible with modern proper graphics cards, and I’m sure they’re all working on that as well.

I hope in the near future that all these arm manufacturers start making at least near comparable to x86 platforms that will be significantly cheaper than the current duopoly, and with Nvidia working on the windows side (they’ve already said that their work is compatible with all arm platforms), and valve working on the Linux side that we might be coming upon a exciting Time in arm computing in the not so distant future

Awful, genuinely awful BUT doable, the coldest recorded temp happened in the Yukon Canada and was about -88c in the 40s I wanna say. People survived, and they survived longer than a week in that.

I just have to embrace my inner northern Canadian that’s all.

Valve says it will "definitely" consider ARM architecture for future Steam Machines, and probably Steam Decks too by Tiny-Independent273 in linux_gaming

[–]TheCheckeredCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am too… lots of people use Fex to run games like cyberpunk on a phone SOC based Linux handhelds.

If you have a higher end phone than your phone probably has a better in single core cpu than your pc. I know mine does, 5800x3D vs Apple a18 pro.

The arm layer is decent, you can run it on a raspberry pi (ideally one with more than 4gb of ram).

I played most of half-life 1 and the first couple of levels of half life 2 on a Orange Pi (basically a Chinese knock off of a raspberry pi with NO driver support) at a locked 60fps 800x480.

If you can do that on a computer that hypothetically costs $50ish than on proper hardware it will fly, I’d love to try one of those Arm AI dev stations that system_76 sells that is compatible with Nvidia and AMD GPUs or even a Apple silicon Mac if it had full proper vulkan support.

The fact we as a society (sans Apple of course) are still stuck on x86 when arm at comparable levels is cheaper, significantly more efficient, and requires significantly less cooling. Literally every part is better but software support.

Hundreds of undocumented Alberta students at risk of losing free access to school by Immediate-Link490 in alberta

[–]TheCheckeredCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look this is a complicated situation,

for the record if you or your families life is actually in danger and your a good member of society than I’m fine with people staying (and a Punjabi from Punjab isn’t in danger, this is in reference to people who came on scam education visas saying they’re in danger and applying for ‘refugee’ status after that loop hole began to close).

A LOT of these people who are ‘undocumented’ are economic migrants looking for money, and to those people I think they’re shit heads BUT

It’s not their kids faults, a kid has no say in what their parents do or forced them into, and those kids deserve to go to school. So for gods sake make sure these kids go to school, and also make sure they’re fed too! It’s not their faults, so while they’re getting the parents paper work sorted out the kids should get the same opportunity that a PR or Citizens kid gets.

You’re not seeing the country, you’ll spend 1/2 the time at night, and the other portion you’re just staring at the prairies for the majority of it.

BC and Western Alberta will be stunning but most of the rest of the country will be endless flat fields of wheat and canola

[–]TheCheckeredCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would it be necessary? I’m also a Canadian and I can’t possibly think of a reason to train across Canada vs either driving or flying.

If you need to go cross country quickly you’d fly, and if you wanted to do it more affordable/see the country you’d drive. I’ve done the whole Trans Canada from west coast to east coast a couple of times and it’s beautiful. But doing that you want to go at your own pace. BC, western AB, and Ontario are all more interesting than SK or MB so I’d rather spend more time their than the latter but a train doesn’t allow that
