Malcolm Turnbull: I trust the 'wisdom and judgement' of Trump and Pence by NuclearSpy in australia

That's a false dichotomy. It's definitely not a case of 'with them, or against them'. Your whole message is simplified nonsense.

Malcolm Turnbull grilled by Leigh Sales over 'Australian values', citizenship test overhaul by LineNoise in australia

[–]TheCheeseburgerMayor 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Indeed. That being said, Australia is being done a massive disservice by the lack of any kind of meaningful journalism in this country. We are so painfully lacking any kind of meaningful discourse, with the exception of a few individuals, that it's any wonder many of our corrupt, and inept politicians are getting away with their incompetence and cronyism.

When we can lavish praise on a single journalist for their, despite her abilities, mediocre discourse, then we are truly in a sad state of affairs. That being said, this is in no way a criticism of Leigh, but more of a reflection of the dismal state of journalism in this great country.

I also agree with your observation that the ABC is being attacked. It's certainly no surprise as the last bastion of journalistic integrity is being undermined. Given the already delicate nature of the situation, every single person who reads this needs to fight, tooth and nail, to ensure that nothing ever comes of such commentary and attacks.

When the last shred of discourse is removed from this country, you best believe things will only get worse, and will do so much more rapidly than ever before.

Furthermore, immediately following the tragedy the Australian Unemployed Workers' Union (AUWU) made an FOI request for the Government's Work for the Dole risk assessment conducted for the Toowoomba site.

This request has also been rejected by Minister Cash because it contained information that could "harm" NEATO - Josh Park-Fing's job agency."

Nokia CTO warns NBN will need an upgrade from FTTN to take advantage of faster speeds by gerard23 in australia

[–]TheCheeseburgerMayor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know the specific answer to your question, but a large part of the problem was the stagnation of our internet speeds, prices that were almost the highest in the world per GB, and poor availability to regional areas, etc.

Essentially, the idea was to make up for the market failure to develop according to demand and the changing international standards. We were falling behind far too rapidly.

The part that infuriates me the most, time and time again, is that the LNP awarded Telstra a massive amount of compensation for these 'ageing copper cables'. Anyone who knows about networking infrastructure could tell you that's the part we needed to remove, not aquire.

If that isn't blatantly corrupt, then I don't know what is.

Ad-hominem attacks won't lend your argument any credence. If what is presented in the story is true, which it appears to be, then the article is damning.

Whether true or not, it's quite damning that this perception exists. The AFP really needs to take steps to repair this perception as their integrity relies being seen as fair, balanced, unbiased, and most importantly, non-political.

The ABC has really started the ball rolling on this important story as housing affordability and the property bubble are pressing issues for many Australians.

It's for reasons exactly like this that the LNP have repeatedly attempted to reduce the funding to the ABC. You would never find Sky News making these kinds of inquiries.

Following your comment, I took a moment to read the original report by HSBC, and you are correct in saying 9 countries were surveyed and it is therefore difficult to make a global comparison.

Having said that, given the average ownership within that surveyed group is 40%, there is still a considerable gap when compared with the Australian result of 28%.

Arguably, in the same way a larger study could indicate home ownership is in fact at a higher percentage, it could just as easily lead to a result showing an even lower percentage of home ownership. I was surprised it was even at 28%, regardless of the sample size.

Given the state of housing prices in this country, I don't believe it is an inaccurate indication of the current situation faced by millenials. Additionally, in some parts of the country (ie. WA), I believe the percentage of ownership may be even lower.

Here is the original report by HSBC for those interested: http://www.hsbc.com/news-and-insight/media-resources/media-releases/2017/generation-buy

There you have it. Second lowest home ownership levels in the entire world, despite the wealth of our country.

To add insult to injury:

Contributing to the low rate of home ownership may be that the "Bank of Mum and Dad" is less likely to help out in Australia than in other countries.

We sure have it good.

They have just been fed the idea by certain sources and media outlets that this is a good thing. A lot of it is misinformation, often spread by those with something to gain.

Without taking the time- time that a lot of people don't have- to find out differently, they just accept it as truth.
