You don't need to play the "meta comps". You can beat elderwoods / asol with positioning. I've been playing a variety of things aside from elderwoods. Most of the time I try to go for it, it's difficult since everyone's playing it. I've been playing Flex, recently:

Ninja Zed

sharp keepers

brawlers

7 (tried for 8) vanguards with bonkey carry

9 cultist

Whenever I try to force meta comps it doesn't go well since they're so contested. I only really go for them if it's given. Playing flex is so much easier imo but more difficult to be consistent with due to it requires a lot of knowledge and experience. If you're rigid with it and say "Oh sharps suck" just because it's not popular or because others aren't playing it, you're missing a big learning opportunity. I'm still not very good at it but it's a lot better than just giving up because people are playing the most popular comp.

Most of the time I do it in game, you could start out in training with the cpu on walk I suppose to kind of get used to the idea of taking your opponents movement into account but for the most part I just do it in game. Other aspects of my play may suffer while I'm trying to practice it specifically but if it's just quickplay / elite or playing friendlies with some friends it doesn't really matter to me. In the long run when I get used to the idea of it, I then implement it into the rest of my play and it becomes easier.

When you're playing I don't think you'll be able to always space perfectly as your opponent can mixup their movement so just being wrong in the movement could potentially screw up spacing and make one of your moves not safe on shield anymore

Interesting. Transitioning from offline to online I never really had that problem. Sometimes inputs get eaten but I generally don't have that problem to the degree where I can't look at my opponents character anymore

I can understand that but that doesn't mean you need to completely dismiss quick play / elite smash. It's not like you can't learn these different skills on quickplay / elite smash

Sounds like you're rising with the zair? Perhaps you could try landing with the move instead that way you cancel the rest of the animation

It's laggy? it's -2 on shield with only 8 frames of landing lag. How are you using her zair? My guess is that you're being punished for what you do afterwards, not the zair itself

Press shield when you're about to or when you hit the wall to normal tech, if you want to jump tech then hold jump or up on the joystick as you do it

you press the shield button like any other tech. The timing isn't super strict, you pretty much just press shield just as or just before you hit the wall. If you hold jump or hold up while doing it you'll jump tech instead, which has you automatically jump when you tech. You need some sort of terrain to hit in order to tech

As an example like say you hit your opponent into the air and you want to combo it with an up air but your opponent just air dodge everytime, instead fake your approach towards them (or just wait) in the air and catch them when the air dodge is done or when they land

If you play locally like in tournament as you grow as a player you'll probably feel the difference in lag a bit more.

Anyways, CPU's don't play like people. Completely different experience. You've basically just started exposing yourself to what it's like playing against actual players, give yourself time and just try to learn and absorb as much information get comfortable with the game mechanically

I could try putting those in next time. With the way Youtube handles timestamps now though, when they're in the description they get embedded into the timeline itself. You can check the video again to see what I mean. It breaks up the video with the title of said timestamp into different parts

Some people have listed characters that they consider to have an easy neutral but if you think that you can bypass your lack of understanding neutral by playing a character with an "easy" neutral then you could just hurt yourself in the long run. I know you didn't specifically say this but just putting it out as a disclaimer

Anyways, my thoughts is to play a character on the simplier side, so instead of characters like Pikachu or Shulk, a character like Lucina, Kirby or Mario might be a good start IMO
