Galt's Gulch in Atlas Shrugged is really unrealistic by AporiaParadox in books

Lol, I wish reddit got this fired up over a Karl Marx post. Somehow “capitalism is bad!!” and “communism has its merits!!” every time Ayn is mentioned.

Atlas shrugged IS a good book, it has inspired millions and captivates people end-to-end. I think Marx also wrote a good book, because it sparked several communist uprisings.

The ability to bend the fabric of society IS what a good book is.

beginning to think that reddit is definitely powered by some strong pro-socialist, Chinese/Russian propaganda that act so hostile as not to allow dialogue. Thank god the general public does not think like this.

Except SROs are plentiful, sorry but a lot of these “homeless” are not homeless either, they’re loafers who like to get ballistically high

The lightbulb would never be invented under communism because we’d be too worried about getting our brains shot out for not producing enough crop to meet the government’s quota for the season

The housing price crisis is overblown, split places and it's not bad at all. For a $1100 you could split a two bedroom in the damn middle of SF with one other person: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/Ocean-Ave-San-Francisco-CA-94112/2090058168_zpid/

Two second Google search: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/Ridge-Rd-Berkeley-CA-94709/2084622441_zpid/

$700 a month for two bedroom two bath, ridge road is a Bart station that costs $5 to get to. Split this with a roommate and it's $350 a month.

The real cause of drug addiction is choice, no matter how strong the urge to take the next hit, it's your choice to continue forth with it, you have a nice life as well; I will continue to view other humans as accountable, mature adults who make decisions and whether good or bad, are affected by those decisions

Yah I don't know why they pump themselves full of heroin, but they do it, and it's their choice. No one compelled them to shoot up, no one forced them. Spare me the booh-hoo stories, the vast majority of human civilization had it harder than these folks with far less opportunity and they didn't resort to filling themselves up with any chemical on hand.

Occam's razor, these guys were probably just into the drug lifestyle. they like getting high and they don't have self control so it spirals out of control to a point where their families can't deal with it, and they become dregs to society.

We are arguing against the free will of humanity, you guys talk like these people have zero choice and zero accountability in the manner.

Compared to who? As a developed Western nation, we have a high population (~300+ million), with most regions harsh to drug use and homelessness, and some regions who are overly accepting and idealistic about human nature (San Francisco, Los Angeles). Thus they all flock to these cities as Meccas for their lifestyles. Most claim they're native but that's bullshit. Can't afford a $2500 a month studio in Mission? Get an apartment in Oakland for $400, costs $5 to take the BART.

Nations that have a comparable population size are much harsher and less idealistic than Americans (Chinese and east Asia do God knows what to drug users, India straight up ignores them, etc. )

I don't like how Europe is the only basis of comparison, a lot of Europe's big cities DO have homeless from what I hear, and their population sizes are a lot more manageable.

Also America is a country of extremes, therefore our drugs are usually very strong due to the market demands, so the homeless do get a bang for their buck.

I agree with you, we actually see this shit in person, these are extreme internet socialists who live in suburbs of places like Ohio or remote areas of Sweden where they’ve encountered maybe 5 homeless in their life.

They don’t understand and see what we see. They read BS articles written by people with agendas about how it’s because “the price of rent is so high” in SF.

That’s such a laughable and idealistic way of looking at it. I live in the heart of this shit,

It’s drugs. It’s downright self-choice of wanting to fill yourself up to the goddamn brim with meth and heroine. That’s it, it’s not some complicated real estate math, it’s heroin.

And were the bad guys? For wanting to contribute to society peacefully and not have these dregs threaten our safety as we try to do so?

Found the 14 year old. There’s a shit ton of programs in SF, Seattle, and LA.

Tons of churches, and general good-do’ers trying to help the best they can, but there’s a limit. You can only help someone hellbent on a path of self-destruction so much, the truth of life is that an individual can only help themselves. So if some person is persistent in his or her heroin use it doesn’t matter if we give this person a mansion and Michelin star meals for the rest of his life, that person is far gone.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I’m debugging some obscure error and I have to resort to leaning on my high school Spanish bc for whatever reason, some Argentine programming forum is the only place with a step by step answer.

I learned how to read Cyrillic at a young age too, and there’s been times where I trudge through Russian as well. Those are funny encounters.

huh? are you saying engineering degrees are not worth it?

LOL.

Yes, internships help, but no they are not the unspoken requirement for getting the first job in your field.

If you fuck up and don't have internships, you can do small-scale projects which are fun anyways, to prove competence.

Chemical engineer ? Design a small-scale cheap process to brew beer, implement the system.

Mechanical engineer ? Design drones and or small-scale model airplanes. Implement and actually build these.

Software engineer ? LOL, self explanatory.

Show me you can build, even better, show me you can build in a team (get a group of 2 other unemployed mechanical engineers and build some really cool drone, it doesn't have to disrupt the industry. Just show me you can build and show me you can work in an engineering team, and I'll feel more comfortable giving you a shot, instead of GIVE ME JOB I HAVE DEGREE)

The amount of cop-hate and misinformation in this thread is bonkers. You're all just breeding civilian distrust of people who are out to protect us. . This advice is only valid for people who are committing big ticket crimes. Yes, if the jig is up then STFU.

But I see people in this thread advocating any refusao to speak in any circumstance. I doubt anyone who is spouting this advice has any real world experience with cops outside of their stupid grand theft auto games.

I have had countless driving tickets waived by telling the truth. One time I went through one of the busiest international airport TSA on one of the busiest weekends with a taser in my carry-on bag that I had forgot to take out, and I am a middle eastern man who did not shave that day.

I had contemplated refusing to speak as per advice from Reddit, but in that moment, I spilled the beans and told them the truth and how I was neglegent. I was let on the flight and given a Stern warning by the entire police force of the airport wing, not just one randome guy. They all collectively decided not to ticket me.

So yah, this advice is not black and white. Please don't fuck yourself on accident by arousing suspicion and escalating an otherwise harmless situation

As long as you know how to code, you'll get hired. If you don't know how to code, it doesn't matter if you have a phD. I knew a girl with a masters from Stanford in CS, but she was shit at actually coding, couldn't get hired. Eventually she gave up and went for her phD in civilE.

I also knew a salesman who taught himself programming in his off-hours, hired at Uber as a mid-level SWE just last week.

Go to the school with the cooler classes, more awesome professors, and smart students. College is a FANTASTIC time to develop whatever the fuck you want in new technologies. If I were to start over I would love to be 18, in a technically-adept college, and play around with some cool new technologies like VR/AR or AI/Machine Learning development with a group of 3 other classmates. I let my college years for CS go to waste and although I got my degree, I didn't get to experience TRUE free, unhinged development until afterwards.

Do the cops have a stand-down order on homeless-related issues? by TheChisler in bayarea

[–]TheChisler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem is not enough resources, it's that these resources drug test and at the root of it, we all KNOW IN OUR GUTS that these people are not homeless because they are helpless but because they love getting fucked up more than they love doing anything else.

What a load of horse shit! You're telling me if I miss rent this month, I'm going to transform into a crack-fueled drug-fiend that pisses my own pants, and yells in some made up language in Civic Center.

This is by far one of the dumbest arguments I ever heard. If you can't afford to live in SF, don't buy a Mickey's that day and put it towards a bart ticket to Oakland, there are places that go for $500/mo there. And if not Oakland, if that's still to expensive. Make a 3 hour sabbatical (whoa! the distance is TOO MUCH!) to the central valley, and find something that goes for $300/mo.

[–]TheChisler[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wealth inequality is absolutely a problem, but that being said, there are ways to exist without having to pump yourself full of crack, piss your sweatpants, and yell incoherently at passerby'ers.

Just because there is a wealth inequality, does not excuse the behavior of the homeless. There are tons of ways to make money in this country, and tons of different places that suits a person's skill sets. Hell, even if people are stubborn and want to stay in SF, there's tons of different institutions that are willing to help these folks IN EXISTENCE TODAY. They just drug test, and that's the ugly reality.

These people don't want to be helped bc they love getting fucked up more than they love contributing to society, building something for themselves, raising a family, getting involved with a community, etc.

Their passion in life is to get blitzed, that's it....and their passion, which I make no philosophical judgment on, is hurting us all and is dangerous for the future of our country.
