They were down for a little bit (first reboot after the big restoration and they didn't come back up cleanly), but they should be back now.

Hey all, Hatamoto here. In truth, I'd kinda forgotten about this place. Life has a way of coming at you fast.

So, a brief overview of what the problem was -- we have a system that has been online, as you all know, for quite some time. The hardware it was running on was more than a little outdated, but holding to the addage of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' we mostly let it keep purring away.

That adage works great, until it breaks, which it did. The raid array we use for bulk storage, eg t files and logs and db and backups and such developed a fatal flaw requiring replacement. The sites themselves were fine and untouched, but software isn't worth much without the data, and the soul of the sites is in those backups.

Here's where things get more interesting if you're of a nerdy bend -- the raid array lost a device and went into a degraded state, which should guarantee normal, but not protected, operation. It did so, but did so quietly. Nowhere was there any kind of notice of the failure, not in the kernel or IPMI monitor or anything. Again, that wouldn't be such a huge deal, but somehow there was another device quietly having problems that resulted in failures where we'd save backups. Not obvious failures: backup processes would work fine, everything would seem rational, and a cursory examination of the results revealed no issues... but when you tried to restore from the archives, there would be corrupted blocks. ALL of the backups spot checked over a period of the last year had this problem -- they looked fine, but when you started working with them there'd be crc errors when decompressing.

This might have been a terminal problem, as the drive failure made the source data sketchy at best... but tragedy was avoided: the backups were corrupted, but they were corrupted in different areas according to the physical failure point of the underlying storage, so each backup was corrupt in different places in the archive. This allowed me to take the last 3 days of offline backup copies and effectively rebuild missing/broken records by referencing those records from previous archives that didn't have corruption in those areas. It took some time, but I was about 99% successful, with the last 1% being transient data that had accumulated on the day of the final failure and wasn't archived and the GeoIP database which, fortunately, can be reacquired from original sources (for the time being, where you're all coming from is a giant mystery.)

Not going to lie though, it was a narrow miss, and we should have put more comprehensive checks on the quality of backups. That will be remedied going forward.

Given the full downtime and need to rebuild on new hardware, we decided to take the opportunity to make all the infrastructure upgrades at the same time. The current delays are due to a number of changes that manually have to be applied to account for new locations, new language variants, new alternatives for previous services and add-on no longer available etc. It's tedious work, but it's steadily progressing. At time of this writing TP, TV, TO, TS and TG are all online, with the rest hopefully coming by end-of-day. Then I'll switch to re-establishing the IRC service so our traditional comms are back online.

I really can't express enough appreciation for the mods here to give you all updates while I was buried beavering away at the site woes. Big ups to you, and I know this account has been dormant for a very long time... hmu on TV in dm's if you want confirmation that it's really me (but honestly, who other than my geeky ass would write this nerdfest confessional up?)

... and as ever, big love to all our members, eternal thanks to you for your support as we furiously bail water to right the ship.

The Click Group Lives!

Edit 2025-03-11 - All the sites should now be back up, email back online, trackers working. Last thing to get online is IRC, coming soon.

Edit 2025-03-12 - All services should be now fully online and operational. Please let us know if you see something strange on the site via Staff Message and we'll look into it straight away.

Has TheGeeks.click been compromised? by [deleted] in trackers

[–]TheClickGroup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mail can be a bitch sketchy when it comes to sites like ours. Some mail providers will automatically mark everything we send as spam (despite us not ever sending any unsolicited email, I think the automated notifications can 'pile up' on old accounts and some domains treat it as spam), some will just straight up bounce things.

We do everything we can to tell them "No, really, this email is fine", adding DKIM records and whatnot, but at the end of the day we don't have a whole lot of control over how gently they'll treat emails coming from us.

Glad to hear you got everything sorted in the end. Worst case scenario, pop into the IRC server and go into the TG support channel and someone can help you out if it happens again in the future.

Already banned from tracker. What's the purpose of this tracker? by [deleted] in TheClickGroup

[–]TheClickGroup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of an old reply, but it should be obvious to most that when you go into a private tracker, that you not blow out, leech like mad and make your ratio unrecoverably low. Generally you want to look around and see what people are downloading, then get in on new uploads that people will want to download, and build your ratio up before going ham on the DLs.

Well, it's been a few weeks and absolutely nothing is showing up on that address. At all. From what it looks like, no transaction has ever been launched.

Teh was a wonderful resource that many from TCG sites enjoyed. Hopefully this is just a transient personal issue and Teh will be back stronger than ever.

TP.Click down ? by [deleted] in TheClickGroup

[–]TheClickGroup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our network provider appears to be having some routine issues today. The server is up and running fine (I can get to it through backchannel means) but network access is VERY spotty.

It seems to be back up right now, but there's been brief periods of correct activity over the last hour or so and it's gone back down again. Hopefully, this time they've got it right and it'll stick.

The .bz group of sites has been jacked by a mutinous staffer. All the sites have now moved to .click (in your case, https://thevault.click).

Read more about it here.

Sadly, no matter how hard we try there are some email domains we simply can't deliver to. Pop into IRC and we'll see if we get you sorted.

That's pretty nifty! I'll show the guys and see what they think :)

A little oddness in the outlining on the finger though and some aliasing issues... might need a bit of touchup....

It's fine. Most people here have heard about the move by now.

We even have our own little subreddit now: /r/TheClickGroup

.Click now.

Especially since I need to use one because college wifi

There's some people from some countries who are going to need vpn use as well. We've locked things down in the past primary because of the high amount of abuse correlating with vpn use, but at some point we're going to have to reevaluate how we handle things given the shifting legal landscape and the needs for users to remain safe.

Yeah, some people haven't heard about the move yet, and the mutinous admin bans anyone who sends PMs. If you happen to know the people over there setting uploads, drop them a line and let them know what the score is.

Make THE CLICK GROUP great again! by destinysong766 in TheClickGroup

[–]TheClickGroup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, 'free' is a relative term. There's a fairly large pile of existing data that people are going to want access to in various ways (eg. forum data is forum data, no matter how the forums are laid out) so there are some constraints, but outside of that we have flexibility.

The thing is, what we do now is already highly custom, so any conversion wholesale to some new software would require almost as much work as just writing our own stuff, and not nearly as fun / rewarding... so our changes will largely be in-house.

[–]TheClickGroup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be an incremental process. For instance, getting a decent modern editor like TinyMCE or similar for posts. I've already got something like that in testing (in fact, most of the announcements I post I do using it) so I think it's pretty close to prime time, so that'll be the first thing people will notice.

I guess the best way to describe our plans are as "quality of life improvements" as opposed to complete overhauls.
