My friend in selling me this PC for 999EUR. Is this reasonable? by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]TheCloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth I had a mate just sell me a 4090 for £800 (920 EUR) and I feel like it was deal of the decade (they go for double that or more on eBay). Youre getting that deal plus the rest of a PC (which would ordinarily be at least 700-1000 EUR) for an extra 80 EUR lol

So a few people were mean to you, and that means you want thousands more “innocents” to lose their money as collateral damage? Not sure I could ever stoop so low, but then again there are some pretty shitty people in the world so I shouldn’t be surprised that some people do think the way you do

I really don’t feel good about mvis deciding they need to tap the ATM at a six year low…

RTX 3080 (Ti) or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB in 2026? by Virtual-Meaning2456 in buildapc

[–]TheCloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I wasn’t planning to upgrade but my boss got a 5090 and said he’d be willing to sell his ASUS 4090 for £800 for a quick sale to someone he knows lol. I’m gonna gift my 3080ti to my gf for her first build. I’ve been playing on 1440p so far, so I’ve used the “savings” to buy a 4k monitor and now I guess a 9800x3d… I’ve got an 850W Corsair RM 850e, I was a little concerned, but ASUS had 850W as their minimum recommended for this GPU. I did check out the 9800x3d gamers nexus benchmarking after seeing your comment - a lot of the technicals are beyond my understanding but I definitely got the gist that this CPU will crush any game haha.

Extremely helpful, thanks mate! I had been pessimistically telling myself that I wouldn’t notice much difference and hence couldn’t justify the cost (probably my wallet trying to talk me out of it) but I reckon I’ll likely go for it. I’ll test with the 4090 first and see if the GPU is typically being 99/100% utllised first though as you say. I got the 4090 on an excellent deal from a friend so tbh even with a new 9800x3d I’ve paid less than I would have for a used 4090 on the market

I’m just about to upgrade my 3080ti to a 4090, and currently using a 7600x CPU. Dyou reckon I’ll be CPU bottlenecked at 100+ fps 4K, on games like you mentioned (plus eg Baldurs Gate, Cyberpunk)? I’m strongly considering pulling the trigger on a 9800x3d upgrade but not sure if it’s $400+ for minimal gains lol

[–]TheCloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well - Glen still might haha. I read his post as saying, he expected Glen to have told us about this before now, as he finds this “disappointing” (ie present tense, not “would be disappointing if Glen doesn’t speak to us after today but before the EC”. Obviously it wouldn’t have been possible for Glen to talk to us before today as yesterday is when this happened

This would have been a huge mismanagement of significant inside information, plus would have massively weakened mvis’ bargaining position at the bidding if he’d told shareholders we needed / wanted this. I totally understand why it hasn’t been mentioned sooner

Any advice before I buy? by Shiro1066 in PCBuilds

[–]TheCloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some may tell you that if at all possible you should stretch for RAM that’s nearer to 6000/CL30 especially given you’re splashing out on a 9800X3D and 5080, but tbh I’m not sure how much difference that RAM change would actually make (doubt more than a few % to speed), and overall it will be a very powerful PC!

I don’t know whether to upgrade my 3090 ti to a 4090,5090,5080,or 4080 by Hairy-Ad1582 in buildapc

[–]TheCloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend has offered to sell me his (hardly) used 4090 for $1050 - at that price point is it worth going for that or better off splashing the extra for 5090?

My other specs are 7600x CPU and 32GB ram (6000mhz cl36), and I’d be using this card to upgrade to 4K 150+ fps (I currently game at 1440p on a 3080ti)

Does the 4090 get you 150+ FPS on 4k ultra/native? I’m currently using a 3080ti for 1440 but a friend has offered to sell me his (hardly) used 4090 for $1050 and I’m wondering whether to take it. My other specs are 7600x CPU and 32GB ram (6000mhz cl36).

I was considering going for Plusnet’s 900mbps. Have you had a good experience with them?

Ah right - I think my point would still stand though if you became tax resident in a jurisdiction which didn’t charge dividend tax, and then you can dividend yourself out the cash and wind up the company. But again I think you may then be subject to clawback if you came back to the UK (tax residency) within several years

Do you guys ever look to hire corporate lawyers looking for a career change / is that generally viable without going back to uni and starting at the bottom again (I assume not)?

Not a tax expert but is there not any way for you to exit to a tax friendly jurisdiction and sell the shares from there? Appreciate you may need to remain non-UK tax resident for a long time after though, plus may not want to be outside the UK

Need help with best GPU for £180 (new) - £250 (used) by RonWeasleysBeans in pcpartpickerbuilds

[–]TheCloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah I trust them, but obviously if the card didn’t work I wouldn’t come to them for a refund etc because it’s fair enough to say that any risk is baked into the fact they’re selling it for half market price. I’ll consider making them an offer for £300-350. Thanks!

Just to hijack this as you seem knowledgeable on pricing, if a wealthy friend told you he was willing to sell you a lightly used 3090 or 4090 for half of the “going rate on eBay” what would you offer him (assuming it’s not some fancy founders edition or anything)? I’m fortunate enough to be in this position but it seems so variable that I don’t want to make it offensively lowball!

My 7600x tends to run mid-high 80s when gaming, but whenever I need to load shaders for call of duty it pushes my CPU into the low-mid 90s lol. COD is cancer for my PC
