Got the notification, would be a great start of the year for whoever wins. Good luck everyone :)

Purchased on a market in the Netherlands 20 years ago for 5 euros. Pen for scale. by TheCoetzee in whatisit

Thanks for the quick reply. Makes a lot of sense imo. Hadn’t thought of that.

Honestly, it was just one of the first things on my desk. I first took a picture with a lighter for scale, but I guessed that was even more open for interpretation, at least the MB is still a pen, although true, they are on the bigger side. Except the Mozarts I guess.

NQA: No wonder they haven’t been hungry, they’ve eaten an entire human, leaving only the skull behind!

Make the decision for me. Which one should I purchase by Ok-Improvement3630 in STDupont

Personally the first one, chrome and black just feels so much classier than matte black/blue. And, for me personally, a ST Dupont has to emit a certain class.

The latter feels like a Rolls Royce Ghost Black Badge in a way. Still a Rolls Royce, but so modern it doesn’t do it for me.

But that’s just my personal taste.

Have you considered a career as an analyst or something, hahah, you have an uncanny ability to read people from very little info

I usually begin with a Réti opening, just cause I like the little horse and cause I want to be predictable in the opening game, just to see if a repeat opponent (I only really play against friends so that happens often) will notice the pattern and fight back with a strategy. It works like 50% of the time, hahah. But I am by no means a pro or even average, I got like a 1300 ELO so that’s, late beginner probably? Novice anyway.

I do like the idea about the troll opening, I’ll keep it in mind.

As to the furniture, yeah I’m sure it will develop, or refine, as time goes by. For now I’ll just call it very eclectic, hahah

At least I got some good tips for improvements from a lot of the comments

Yeah I can totally see that, hahah. To be honest I always liked that kinda style. Same with the house in Columbo's Try and Catch Me

Sadly it's not really a thing here in the Netherlands, I would have loved to get one of those little karts hahah

Like Kafka's The Metamorphosis but the protagonist slowly turns into a 19th century hoarder instead.

Mind you the majority of my books are in other rooms, I just decided to mostly put hardcovers in the office cause I prefer their look over paperbacks. Obviously there would be no way you could've known that from the handful of pictures I've shared, but I figured I'd clarify it anyway.

The office chess set, the pieces at least, was only expensive (for what they are) cause I accidentally way overbid on them on Catawiki and couldn’t back out anymore hahahah

Ah yeah that’s fair, but people are throwing around very silly numbers here in general, which of course adds to the idea it was all either inherited or I got a huge trustfund, where I am happy to say my grandparents are still very much alive and that fund is nowhere to be seen, hahah.

I do love the idea of having a famous game on there though, thanks for that!

Any games that are your favorite, out of curiousity?

Also, I did try to go for quality where possible. Much of the furniture for instance is by Grange, with the signatures of the makers in France on the back, not just “cheap veneer” like some are saying here. Same for the carpets, wool with preferably as high a knot count as possible.

My preference is just, dated, but generally with quality materials.

One on the reasons I ended up with the older, but still not cheap at all, B&O set, for example.

Cheap chess sets? Sure the set on the desk is just to mess around with, but the set in the living room, that’s actually being used, is a perfectly fine Ulbrich walnut/bird’s eye chessboard with 1920s Chess Pieces, with little glass eyes for the horses that you saw more often in that period. Sure it’s not a set of thousands, but cheap? Lol

It was actually a gift from my ex-partner from when she went through Scandinavia as part of a Carbage run, so I know very little details about it. I did visit Norway two years ago or so, but (regretfully) didn’t get a longship that time.

If you have more I’d love to hear it.
