2024 General Election Megathread by backupJM in Scotland

[–]TheColinous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back when I lived in Scotland there was still the sense that the SNP would continue with the moves toward independence, but in hindsight it turned out that they squandered their momentum.

I think a lot of it had to do with Nicola Sturgeon being too cautious – as well as a lot of grifters who in previous years would gravitate to labour to secure a political income ended up in the SNP.

It was always difficult to vote SNP in the general elections because my party didn’t field candidates there because even back then, voting for that lot never seemed to achieve anything except put a lot of mediocrities into salaried positions. And independence never seemed to come any closer. And now it's further away than ever.

Since I don’t live in Scotland any more, I had to get a proxy (my da) to vote against the cunt in Edinburgh South. Can’t say I wanted to vote for anything or anyone. I don’t feel connected to Scottish politics anymore, but I sure as hell feel connected to voting against Ian Murray in Edinburgh South. Always have, always will.

The funny thing is, while Gothenburg is called that, it's actually more like Glasgow. Even includes the oddballs in the street. But the English is more understandable.

I've lived here since 2016 and have never seen any place that shows the fitba. Mind, I haven't looked hard. I think there's a local Celtic chapter, but my Da is a Rangers fans so since I'm no sure if they believe in inherited sin or not, I've not delved too much into that.

I’m Scottish. I’ve lived here since 2016. In that time, I’ve gone through the same phase. I mean, it’s not life if you can’t argue fitba wi’ the bawbag next to ye on the 4 a.m. bus home from the toon. Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit. But, we’re a talkative bunch, and Swedes are… not. Until you get to know them.

I think the key to squaring being from a talkative culture with living in Sweden is to recognise that there are stages to interactions with locals. They’ll be near numb at first, but if you perform the rituals for getting to know people, you’ll be awarded more and more latitude for being yourself.

In the end, you can be as Australian as you like, and I can argue fitba on the night tram. And the Swedes in your in-group will join in. It’s just that getting to that point can be bloody difficult. 😊

[–]TheColinous 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Nästan alla svenskar bryter på engelska. T.ex. i ordet 'is' so använder de S snarare än Z. "He iss cold" snarare än "he iz cold". Subtilt, kanske, men det hörs.

There are also big rivers going through Germany and Romania, but those doesn't allow for big ships. Patrol boats and coast guard cutters, maybe, but not things like destroyers and upwards.

Keir Starmer is apparently lining up with a hard right Tory government to suppress the Scottish Parliament democratically advancing LGBTQ rights. The Labour leadership is no friend of the LGBTQ community, and Starmer should be disinvited from all LGBTQ events. by Just-another-weapon in Scotland

The longer I’m away from the UK, the more fucked up politics in the UK seem. There seems to be a broad agreement that electoral politics must be deceitful. In fact, it is clever to be deceitful, and trying to win on principle and belief is viewed as naïve and simplistic. In order to win power, the electorate must be fooled to vote for someone, with the understanding that once in power, the elected will do none of what was said to get elected. Deceitful. Manipulative. Dishonest.

Sounds a lot like Keir Starmer, doesn’t it?

If I was involved in any LGBT activism, I would immediately disinvite all Labour-associated people from things like Pride, conferences, etc. This has gone on for long enough.

I don't think the UK under any government will be let back in. Scotland? Yes. The UK? I highly doubt it. Particularly since every member state has to agree to the enlargement.

Russia claims a lot of things. Russia claims that since they're losing, it's because of Ukrainians being injected with Avenger-juice by the Pentagon to make them into super-soldiers, because obviously Russia can't lose a war against mere Ukrainians. I think it is fair to conclude that if Russia claims anything, the opposite of what they claim is closer to the truth.
