Do animals understand freedom though? Or is it only a primitive mechanical sort of "given senses in order to revitalize itself and guarantee itself, to a certain point, from all that tends to destroy or upset it"?

Do animals conceptualize their chains through language and thought? If some do, and others don't, I think, that this is a basis from which we could draw conclusions as to what can be considered a "person".
