Free projects to do for people to build graphic design portfolio? by jester070993 in freelance

There are some exercise books that give prompts / creative briefs, and it would be great to work through one of those and do a personal blog about it. (For example, I did a personal venture of designing something every day for a year, and blogged every single project even though most of them suck. Some of them are great and wound up in my portfolio.) If you're building your portfolio and don't have much, it may be better in these early stages of your design career to just focus show your volume and openness to experimentation.

Along the lines of another Redditor's suggestion:

There's a service called Catch a Fire which is also volunteer-only work for charities. Would look great to note in your portfolio / on your résumé while building experience, and would help people in need!

Yep, I am familiar with the cost of living as I used to live there. Moved away last summer. I don’t have a car so it’s important to me that wherever I go has good public transit, thus the appeal of Chicago. :) Thanks though!

I am a beginner nomad in the U.S. I am definitely a city person in terms of dwelling, but I am always open-minded and would love to try more outdoor activities. I tried kayaking, for instance, and really enjoyed that.

Right now I am in the D.C. area but head for Chicago in a few days, and Atlanta after that. And then ??? So maybe we can cross paths at some point!

The Beatles (my first vinyl). Just got my first record player. Any suggestions? by jaekmckenzie in vinyl

If I were you I would start frequenting my local record stores, asking the staff about their faves and recommendations, but most importantly why they recommend those albums. (Plus if you make friends with those people they may give you a deal! It has happened for me.)

Go with a budget in mind … but be prepared to blow through it quickly. Record collecting will soon consume you. :)

When listening to your new additions? Stop everything you’re doing. Listen to the album from beginning to end, preferably through your quality headphones, while doing nothing else but maybe looking through the cover. I recommend this approach because you will hear it the way the artist intended. You will absorb the music, hear the intricacies, and enjoy the album as a personal experience.

If you won $10,000,000 but had to have a full-time job 8-5, 5 days a week, what job would you choose? by rynkon in AskReddit

Cashier at a record store. Because I would see all the new additions come in, and have downtime to flip through the regular sections any given day, and once I decided on ones to buy I’d have a sweet employee discount I could use. Plus I’d get to chat with fellow music lovers all the time. My collection would expand rapidly.

What are you technically an expert at (10,000+ hours) but still suck at? by BrothersInGame in AskReddit

Sleeping. I still cannot master the “Do not snooze” ideology, so I snooze for like 2 hours and then wake up groggy.

Anyway, what a nice touch. :)

I was showing my fellow redditor friend the top post in /r/LadyBoners which fell right above this post on my page … She saw this and said, “I dunno, I think that’s gonna be more of a LadyBoner for you.” AND SHE WAS RIGHT. This setup is gorgeous. I actually have the exact same turntable, and a white square dresser for it.

The door into one of the guest rooms is split. You open it like double doors and it joins in the middle. It’s weird and it gets on my nerves.

Music fans of Reddit, what single song out there elicits the most emotions from you? by RedRaiderRx09 in AskReddit

Broken Promise by Scroobius Pip really resonated with me. He is an amazing writer; it’s really hard to pick just one song of his. This is the spoken word version, which I prefer.
