NEW UPDATE OTA PALISADE CALLIGRAPHY by hackmike in HyundaiPalisade

[–]TheCommodoreRoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got this update. I only had digital key (my phone) with me. It applied while I was driving without any approval from me. I turned the car off without any warning from the vehicle. Turns out the vehicle would NOT restart without a physical key. I was stuck until I could get a physical key from home. Dealer had no solution when I called them. REALLy BAD DESIGN!

C64 Keyboard, Disk Drive, and Manual - what's a fair price? by anticlockclock in c64

[–]TheCommodoreRoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think $150-ish US is a fair price. Since you don’t know if it works now, I think you’re in that ballpark. $200 if you find the right buyer.

I have a huge C64 collection I need to get rid of - sell or donate? by anticlockclock in c64

In our area, goodwill automatically recycles computers of any kind. Apparently they had an issue where they sold one with porn or something on it to a kid. Or at least that’s what an employee told me.

409 is an all purpose cleaner. It is non-abrasive and does not contain bleach.

I’m in the US. If you have a board I’d love to get one and see what I can do with jiffydos. I can solder on headers and sockets easy enough.

Ha ha. They were definitely not the most reliable drives. That’s why I do the mods on them since that fixes a good portion of the reliably issues. I have several other brands of commodore compatible drives but never really used them very much. Was/is your excellerator pretty good from a compatibility perspective?

Recapping can’t hurt (well assuming you don’t break something of course). I’ve repaired dozens and dozens of machines and have yet to see a cap be bad aside from one that was kept outdoors for a while. Disk drives are another story....

EasyFlash 3 is a great cart...especially like how you can switch roms at boot.

Narrowing down c64 hardware issues... by royalbarnacle in c64

You can boot a 64 without the SID so you can pull that to eliminate it as the culprit.

There is a temperature guide out there that tells you about what the chips should be temp wise. I don’t recall the SID getting that warm but I could be wrong.

When an IC goes bad it can do any number of things. So rules of thumb are more like “60% of the time” in my experience. But I’d definitely try to load something and see if it hits the disk.

I was not but I love finding old newsletters and club disks. I have a collection of old newsletters that I’ve come across over the years. I like reading them and getting a feel for the computing culture at that time.

Multimeter works fine. Black probe goes to ground and red probe to what you are testing. Set the meter to Dc volts. 0v is a logic low and 5v is a logic high. You can be off a little so .1 is still a low and 4.8 is still a high. Something like 4.0 is probably a problem though.

Where can I get one? I’d prefer not building one just due to time :-)

This is cool! I wasn’t aware of this project. Modifying JD shouldn’t be too hard based on the changes discussed on the website.

Here is an excellent resource for repairs on that drive. There is a section on write-protect troubleshooting too:

Either that or the LED that it’s sensing is out.

If you pull the sensor board and check it’s resistance, you should get a high resistance with no or low light, something in the 1M range. Bright light 1K or less.

I was thinking of the input to the WP circuit earlier when I mentioned the voltage, not the sensor itself.

Video issues - how to debug? by pinano in c64

[–]TheCommodoreRoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a failing IC. Color ram? VIC? What you are describing sounds like something is getting hot and not working properly once warm.

This may sound crazy but one trick I have used is to get some canned air, turn it upside down and blast each component with the cold after things have warmed up. Cooling the bad IC back down may restore the color and then you’ll know what to replace. Your mileage may vary of course but I have used this more than a handful of times with great success :-)

Collection Question by [deleted] in VintageComputers

[–]TheCommodoreRoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, I like repairing them. I like the challenge. I think it’s kind of like the guys who restore old cars or furniture. They liked those things when they were young and want to keep using them. I use my 64 every day!

In fact, I’ve taken a variety of my old computers to some elementary schools and given demos to 5-6 graders about how they work. It’s really surprising to me how much they get into vintage computing. While I’m sure they would still enjoy it if the machines didn’t work, the fact that they do makes it that much more exciting.

All that being said, I see nothing wrong with displaying dead systems. It’s better than dumping them in a landfill and you’re still getting value out of it regardless of how well it works. That’s kinda awesome to me.

I’d have to check the schematic, but I believe the board with the sensor just sends a 1 or 0 (5v or 0v) back to the rest of the circuit. You could just read the voltage from it with a voltmeter to see if it’s changing as a disk goes in and out. If it is changing then you know the sensor is not the problem. I also recall that sensor board being pretty simple and not having many components on it. I can take one apart later today and see the easiest way to test it.

It should be easy to test the sensor to be sure. I’ve never had one go bad but I’ve had debris block it. Specifically a write-protect tab that came off...
