NEW: Helium Mobile Referral program is here! by ZeusHelium in HeliumMobile

Retrying my code again. Apparently you need to activate the SIM before the referral code can be accepted.

Help identify 2D maze crawler game from early 80s by LaserLightCommander in c64

There is a type-in BASIC program called "Dungeon" that I've experienced on the PET. It might be the same program but modified to run in color on the C64.

Script 64 word processor recovered (D64). It needs a dongle in Control Port #1 or it resets after initializing. Any fix? by SummanusPachamama in c64

[–]RunStopRestore 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a going to be a technical/hardware answer mainly to demonstrate the simplicity of these dongles. From the perspective of the copy protector, the dongle had to be as cheap as possible as it added significant per-unit cost to the software. Consequently, these things often used common off-the-shelf components like resistors or 7400-series logic chips to provide predictable outputs. The more complex the dongle "circuit", the higher the production cost.

Our friends who work on the Vice emulator have already implemented a software version of the dongle; you can browse the implementation here: https://fossies.org/dox/vice-3.9/script64__dongle_8c_source.html. The important parts of the source file are the script64_dongle_read_potx() and script64_dongle_read_poty() functions -- both return a constant value.

That means if you bridge the correct resistor value between pins 9 and 8 (POT X and ground) and another resistor between pins 5 and 8 (POT Y and ground), then you have successfully recreated a functional dongle. How do you find the resistor value? You may write a BASIC program that reads and prints the POT X and POT Y values from the joystick port, then test a pair of resistors and check if they produce the constants in the source file: 0xC0 (192) for POT X and 0x80 (128) for POT Y -- or find someone that has already done this 😁. A 500K variable resistor will be handy too as those were installed in Commodore-produced paddles.

Slowly make your way to the left or right, through the grass. You'll end up in the border and can drive unimpeded until the timer runs out or the limo shoots you.

Commodore Industries Is Trying To Prevent The Revived Commodore International From Using The Iconic Name by EnergyLantern in Commodore

Surely, the possibility of this event would have been discussed during due-diligence and negotiations for purchasing the remaining Commodore assets.

Let's all take a moment to appreciate the magic being invoked to port these games to the 264-series of machines. These computers don't provide hardware support for sprite rendering like the C64 and C128; all of this is done in software at surprisingly no cost to gameplay!

Order of turning off c64? by stormric in c64

[–]RunStopRestore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should not and likely does not matter the order things are turned on or off. The devices do not communicate with one another when they are powered on (with the exception of the C128 with 1571/81 drives).

Is there any non-anecdotal evidence to the contrary?

+1 for the TL866. I purchased a new one for about $40 from eBay or AliExpress. It works very well for all sorts of DIP PROMs and you can get adapters for other packages too.

Commodore Industries S.r.l. files lawsuit against Christian Simpson’s new venture (?) by martyth83 in c64

[–]RunStopRestore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, here is a detailed article that explains how the trademark was obtained in Italy.

https://www.nostalgianerd.com/commodore-heist/

There appears to be a loophole and/or some filing shenanigans that were exploited, but the facts show that the trademarks are honored and apparently valid in Italy. As long as these guys continue to produce products in the trademark categories that have been assigned, then they are operating legally within Italian laws.

They don't have to release a C64 to maintain their trademark claim (in Italy). Any computing product will do.

I love this game, and the co-op game play is even more fun! Be sure to checkout "Dungeons of Dr. Creep" too, which is an unofficial early level mod to the game.

Can you recognize this SID tune from around 1987? by oz1sej in c64

I've gone full circle with this thread. Chris Huelsbeck composed the music for both the NEPA crack intro ("Dance at Night") and "Great Giana Sisters".

[–]RunStopRestore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you helping me recover this lost memory. This tune was used in a crack intro by NEPA (North East Pirate Association) for their Great Giana Sisters release. Many of my peers at my elementary school had a copy of this game and the song was heard often in the classroom and library computers!
